Trying to get some of my friends here in Canada to push rugby in schools, but everyone is hocky bedonnerd. I played lock (5) for 10 years and loved every bit of it.
In America, it's college football. In Japan, it's high school baseball. In South Africa, it's schoolboy rugby. It's quite interesting to see these countries have a massive following of their respective #1 sports at youth level when most of these kids might never make it as professionals.
These are mostly elite schools. We have plenty of middle class rugby schools with sooo much talent. The truth is no country can match SA in numbers when it comes to rugby players. Probably only 5 percent of our rugby playing youth pursue it professionally. If every good school talent would be nurtured and backed financially we would have 12 super rugby teams and 3 Springboks Teams easy. We love the sport but finances, politics, red tape, corruption, racism sometimes. Yes mostly Black government officials are corrupt and few whites are still racists when it comes to the soo called white sports e.g rubgy and cricket. But we will get there.

Respect to SA from NZ - always formidable tough and bully-ish from school boy up to Springbok level - always the benchmark for physicality - just part of the esp Afrikaaner psyche - Its different in NZ, the best NZ schools play a pragmatic game built on toughness, speed and skill and being well drilled and disciplined thats why the best schools in NZ are not usually the giant Island school 1st XVs lwho may be full of athletes natural talent and the giants but came up short at the very highest level, the ABs are never the biggest team in international rugby, England, SA, etc are almost always bigger but the ABs have the same strengths as the best NZ schools; mobility, toughness, highly skill, well-drilled, pragmatic players - this is a reflection of NZ's national charater and psyche too though this is changing and evolving as NZ evolves, I like the way the Irish, French and increasingly, other celtic teams play too, full of passion and fire, can lose by 50 points one day and can kill you the next dep on how they are feeling, England play like the world belongs to them and should bow down which is why we all hate losing to them, Ozzies are optimistic and glass half full, they win one game against the ABs and then think theyre the best thing since sliced bread, can never cont them out, Island teams play with alot of heart courage and pride and face burdens none of the other teams would dream of ever facing eg - having to pay their own fares to play for countries, having no gear to train with etc - Im a NZ raised Islander that grew up playing rugby
I wouldn't call it bully-ish as much as it about using what you have. Here in SA we are gifted with naturally big, strong and mobile players, so it would only make sense to use that to our advantage. Also, the intent behind our physicality is rarely to inflict pain out of malice, but generally serves a purpose of either generating go-forward on attack, or halting momentum on defense. It may seem like a simple, blunt approach to the game, but it's actually a remarkably astute and efficient tactic as it uses our best attributes to gain ascendancy in a game. The teams that have the best records against us (notably NZ) are teams that are able to either front up physically to halt our momentum, or use our sometimes predictable tactics to their advantage (Ireland in particular have been very good at this in recent years). If you look at successful SA teams, they generally have a very systematic approach to a game. With the kicking game, coupled with the physicality of especially the forwards being a "slow poison" (simply tiring the opposition team to the point of breaking). In most of these games it will be a tight affair until around the 60-minute mark, where the gradual breaking down of the opposition's energy levels leads to gaps opening up in the defense or simple lapses in concentration. You'll rarely see a strong SA team be all running from the start of the match (unless it serves the express purpose of gaining early ascendancy). This is also why we generally produce less superstars (with some exceptions of course) than NZ, for instance. Our players play within a system that's designed to break the opposition's game down, as opposed to simply overwhelming them with superior speed / skills (which we generally don't have, again with exceptions). When all of this comes together, you get games like the '07 and '19 WC Finals, where the opposition (England in both cases) simply get gradually stifled out of any scoring opportunities and have to take increasing risks to stay in the game, giving us more and more opportunities to score. On the flip-side, SA teams that have tried to embrace a more expansive (and consequently more individual-focused) game plan have been largely unsuccessful, with some exceptions. Case in point would be the Harry Viljoen era (early 2000's), and the Allister Coetzee era (famously leading to the 52-0 defeat to an incredible NZ team in 2017). Our players learn from an early age to play as part of a 15-man unit, as opposed to playing for personal glory. Of course this doesn't always pan out, as a rugby player in SA, you WILL be regularly reminded that you're only as good as the player next to you. At least, that's the theory behind it, the practice doesn't always hold true.
I miss playing rugby in south africa. Was fortunate enough to be the star number 8 and win the championship in yr 2000 with my school. Beats any atmosphere ive played in at Australia where i live now. Also i went from number 8 to playing wing centre and eventually fullback. Schools need more spirit and support when it comes to our rugby in Australia I’m from South Africa and I live in Australia and that’s the one thing I missed from school in South Africa... spirit
Rugby league killed union in aus our nrl talent wouldnsmoke them
Woooo look at the talent but look at the unity rugby brings.
Some genuine talent in there, I wish our schoolboy scene was as intense as that!
Sad that we probably won’t see this for another year

Wow what TALENT. World champions today.and the future, I thought what’s his name Kobe Chesney was a freak. But he’s just one of many in the rugby Talent of South Africa.

Thats interesting but not suprising, herein SA theres a big All Black following from locals
I had never heard of South African school rugby before. Very much reminds me of how American Football is played at universities here in the US. A sport is always at its purest form at the amateur level!
The skill in this is crazy but some of the defense is no where near as good as the attack 😂
5:51 is more like ahhh what a pass!! Rather than what a tackle!!🙄
Yeah brilliant pass. That try was 90% him.

Out of Holland, watching this you guys make me homesick .great fantastic ,super.better than pro
One thing I like about school rugby is that there is no money, so we get less of this tactical kicking. Lovely running rugby that makes it worth watching.
That's how we do it in SA.. I live in Paarl, a Rugby institution! And here whenever you see paarl school Rugby on, like Paal Boys playing, or Paarl Gymnasium etc.. ALL schools in Paarl basically.. you see how well supported they are by supporters and family. We support our local stars very much 🌟 as the celebrities they are...
This is what I wish my school was like. Just the feel and Adrenalin when you walk out on the pitch 🔥
Beginning warcry:
We are gathered here today
To witness

Brothers of Saints
We are Glorious
We are Warriors
What lies on that field?

As a rugby player in the states this is hard 👊🏼☠️
I went on tour to SA with school and played against a few of these schools and they are pretty good ngl
Love nothing more than to see a fellow Rondebosch boy sail over the line!
I played rugby in high school (South Africa)...these guys would eat you alive if it was legal😂💔💔the competition is intense and every tackle felt personal, but I enjoyed every single moment.
Don't even get me started on the side steps, I played both wings and full-back...I was on the receiving end of a couple of steps, but I dished out a couple to return the favour.
Missing the feeling 😭😭
For sure
Stunning compilation of schoolboy rugby (I coach 0/14's). Please compile more videos. Highveld schools will be much appreciated.

nice to see Bishops boys here, rugby wasn't just a sport it was about pride, rivals, culture and passion. This would be intensified if you were at boarding school.
I’m from South Africa 🇿🇦 and I feel so proud idk why
Yeaahhhhhh saaaame man🤣 It feels like today's kids don't know about SA's real potensial💯
This is RUGBY... Profound rugby... I see the evidence of South Africa winning the world cup
Well said

No country can match the steroid abuse in South Africa's school rugby system either.

Proud to be a south African school rugby boy!!
Which to means Australians are not as fast coz i was not fast enough to play these positions in SA rugby
Rugby union in Australia is the beta sport
So....basically the SARU has a conveyor belt of future rugby players 🤣🤣👌🏾🇿🇦 it's also really nice to the uncensored spirit of competition and brotherhood here! 😊
