  • Oh dear, or dear - the clue is in the price!
In this video I share my experiences of knowingly buying a knock-off tarot, then buying the authentic version and comparing the two.

11:23 In addition to people who simply prefer smaller decks, I think some people would buy a second, smaller "travel" deck if more of them were available. Pirate publishers also jump in to satisfy buyers who desire popular decks that are unavailable because they are out of print or were printed in limited editions and now sell at incredible prices.

There's a certain deck that I liked a lot but I didn't buy it due to the creator getting accused of plagiarism. Recently I've been considering buying a pirated version so the creator won't profit from it. 😈 Otherwise I don't buy pirated decks. But I can definitely see your point that if a deck is out of print and selling second hand at a ridiculous price, pirated seems enticing.

Yes I mostly use smaller decks.

I've accidentally purchased pirate decks when I was a beginning reader and didn't know better. The cardstock quality was terrible, and the art was reduced so much that the cards were dark, and I couldn't really see the images well. I ended up recycling them.

Thanks so much for making this video! I recently bought a pirate deck on Amazon and was quite disappointed. I returned it. But I absolutely see your point that the deck publishers are missing an opportunity to print different versions of decks at different price points.

I accidentally purchased a pirate deck when I first started reading tarot. It was of a deck that was no longer in print and, although the card stock is dreadful, it was more of a study deck than a reading deck anyway. So I guess it served a purpose.
I think publishers are finally realising that there is a market for smaller, less expensive decks - that is where tarot (and oracle) in a tin fits in. I exclude ‘mini’ decks as many of those are too small and often don’t have guidebooks/lwbs. There are a few decks that I would never have purchased in the regular size (for example, Wild Unknown) but thought I’d take a chance on the cheaper ‘in a tin’ variety. Haven’t regretted a single tin purchase…but I certainly have regretted full size version purchases!
As for Fyodor Pavlov - beautiful deck, but I opted for Fifth Spirit instead (better price point, smaller box and smart image choices too). All the best.

I love that deck. I have the mass market and one of his limited run etsy releases. He’s awesome

I agree with access. Many decks have so many bells and whistles that are unnecessary.
Some tarot channels wax on about edging and the lwb and card stock that it does create bias.
My hands are small so I prefer decks made out of linen finish and black or blue core paper. I accept this bias, but while I have unloaded decks because they were unwieldy, it’s mainly because the imagery doesn’t bring me in or help me.
More mini or poker sizes would be awesome. Some decks no matter the size or finish I will love. The OG FP deck is like that

I agree some on social media create part of the problem when reviewing decks. Some, not all, creators spend a great deal of time talking about gilding, special finishes, large, full color books. They complain if a book is black and white, or if the box isn't deluxe enough for them. I think many are just interested in acquiring flashy objects that photograph easily for IG. And recently the trend is to see what it's like to pair a deck with many other decks - giving the idea that you simply must have a huge library decks in order to read properly. I'm convinced many have nothing else to talk about in their videos except the superficial description of a deck. That's why they stay silent during flip throughs. They put way too much emphasis on everything but the actual substance of the cards and how they read. And say how disappointed they are if a deck is just "basic".

Sadly, I have to admit that I would probably go for the pirated version of the Fyodor-Pavlov Tarot. Upon viewing the comparison, the original, for me, didn't stand the test, given the price. To be clear, I am not going to do it for more than one reason, but this is my honest opinion.

The images in the pirate copy are noticeably off-centered- you haven’t mentioned this in the video. Then again, this is an issue with a lot of legitimate decks as well, which I find immensely annoying. They’re perfectly aligned in your expensive copy, though 😊👍🏻

Did you get it on purpose?
Because if I remember correctly, a mini of this deck hasn't been made yet.
But then again, this is the first review of a knock off that I have seen.

I got it on purpose as a journalistic investigation, yes, but I also bought the proper version, so the artist got his share.

@@the-999-asmr-tarot-show The cards in the knock-off version are on quite nice card-stock - in fact I prefer them to the official ones, which are on linen-textured card.
