Hey WolfheartFPS!!! How was your sister's wedding??? I noticed that you used to be a bard yourself , I've listened to some of the songs that you sang and although it's not the style of vocals I'm particularly drawn to , I have to give credit where it's deserved and my friend you are/were an excellent singer. Though a lot of vocalists won't admit it when they hear someone sing that's either as good as , or better than they are , I for one have no problem acknowledging the quality of proper vocal techniques being utilized. You my friend are/were a great singer. I'm not being sycophantic either , I also don't just credit or accolade someone who doesn't have a good singing voice or uses improper techniques. Well dude I hope you're having a good day. I'm kinda in rough territory RN , I want to play BG3 very badly , however ; wife wants to wait till it's out. We both own the EA , I understand her not wanting to play for spoilers , and I kinda feel the same way , but when you're releasing all of this great content , it's like a good drug put in front of your face. Hang out in a Barber shop and eventually...
Hi Wolfheart! As you know, I've been watching many videos and reading a lot of lore for my fanfic. Yours is the only video that I remember covering the reason why the Netherese had enemies attacking them in the first place. Good job!
6:18 I don't know why, but hearing about magic and heavy magic reminds me that there is both water and heavy water on Earth. 🤔 9:36 Astarion was around for their return. Something to keep in mind for the future, even if he wasn't necessarily aware of it at the time. Great video is always, thank you. ✌️
"Now Gale, I wanna help you out, but what if we let you turn into a mindflayer and then your nuke went off at their homebase wiping out all of the Mindflayers? Sounds cool right?" *Lae'zel approves*
Literally my favourite part of DnD lore is the Netherese empire. Great to see it being shared more broadly now that we're getting hints towards it in BG3. Thanks a bunch for what you do!
I can see why, the backstory for the people and the region is so cool. This was all new to me, but i love maps and always looked at that desert. Real cool to learn about how it got there.
I love this subject matter. I think I want a film telling the story of Karsus, humanizing him a bit (a serious film like LotR, not a jokey one like the latest D&D)... showing him trying to fight against fate, but ultimately failing.... though because of him, the world and its future was made better. He realizes all of this at the moment of his death, during an interdimensional conversation with the dying Mystryl, as they both die, but also make peace with each other. Hmmm....
My next D&D campaign is set in the Anauroch desert, with plenty of juicy Netherese secrets to find. BG3 is going to be real distraction though, cannot wait!
1372 DR is also the year the Neverwinter Nights game happened! Also, Catti-Brie, one of Drizzt's companions, reincarnated as a Bedine woman of the Desai Tribe named Ruqiah by her present life parents. She fully remembers her past life as Catti-Brie, and married Drizzt, having a half-drow daughter with him, Briennelle Zaharina, who should be three or four years old during Baldur's Gate 3. Oh, and Telamont Tanthul's attempt to help Shar replace Mystra as goddess of magic is told in a novel called "The Herald" by Ed Greenwood, published in December 2014, and the story is set in 1487 DR, before the Second Sundering ended.
its not Netheril but Matt Mercer's world had similar empires, and they did a miniseries streamed about how it fell and its some of the best streaming D&D I've ever seen, I love high magical civilizations , give me any story about wizards constructing Project Hubris and all dying as a result, (also Brennan Lee Mulligan is the only storyteller that can make D&D games that consistently make me cry)
Yeah, Wolf! Thanks for keeping the lore series going. Hope you have a great week and kick up some sick moves at your sisters wedding. Wolfpack, best pack!
You convinced me to not only buy BG3, but also to play 1 and 2 and Icewind Dale. Thank you Wolf! Regardless how well (and I hope very well) the launch goes, I got my money's worth just in Early Access! (although to others I would recommend waiting for full release, just to be safe!)
@@dalcero7 @marco0445 Only if you don't have the time. Playing through those games gives so much feeling and lore. The enhanced editions are a great improvement without changing the experience. Bioware has written a tonne of in-canon info for you to explore in BG I and II. Oh, and Icewind Dale flipping nails it from a design perspective without being as massive as the other two. Best of the 2nd Ed CRPGs IMO.
@@marco0445 Meh. My problem with IWD is that it is a very contrived story, and although there's some great soundtrack and some good voice acting (where it exists), it's just strictly a combat game with story as a back-backdrop. BG2, and to a lesser extent BG1 have a lot more story to offer and a lot of great dialog. Aside from a lot of the weird design decisions they made with the EE companions, there is a lot to offer and the characters presented are often very 3D characters. BG1 is a great game but is more similar to IWD in terms of combat-first gameplay. BG2 learned from the trend that was happening in RPGs at the time and added a lot more voice acting work and character development / interplay.
Oh and my favorite random Netheril fact (courtesy of Ed Greenwood): the reason there are glowing mushrooms in the Underdark is because of Netherese mushroom farmers.
You bringing to my attention things I've just read about in passing. Thanks for re kindling my love of the Realms (as Ed Greenwood would say). I feel like I leveled up (gain proficiency in history) listening to these. Thanks Wolf. You are already a Sage! :D
Good stuff man! I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and will no doubt continue to. I've said it before, but you truly have a gift for story-telling, and I am happy to have found your channel. (Thanks to BG3 and Larian Studios!)
I've been enjoying these lore videos, keep up the good work Wolf! This one was so cool, the moment of "so that's why there's a desert there" sold it for me.
Couple of minor things... The Avatar spell, if I have my information correct here, was technically able to pick from different gods, and it was down to Karsus to pick which god to take the power from. As such, technically the spell could have been able to work had he picked from anyone OTHER than the goddess of magic. Now if that would have helped him or not in the crisis they all faced at that moment is up for debate, but he could have made the spell work had he picked any other god, but it failed because by picking her, it damaged the source of the weave and as such damaged magic itself which caused the whole problem in and of itself. As for the "reincarnation", while this is technically true, it's also one of the goddess' selected replacements in a mortal form that was selected to take her place. This mortal replacement, after witnessing what happened then chose to alter the rules of magic henceforth. Technically speaking it's not the same person, hence the name change and thinking being slightly different. New goddess, new way of thinking.
Interesting. I guess it makes sense though that someone from the magical Netherese Empire would want to take power from the goddess of magic. Magic was everything in that society and to have control over the weave itself is a Netherese mage's wet dream.
Not quite right. It intention was to be able to draw magic from any god. When cast though the way the spell worked there was only one available god it could draw power from. Karsus did not intend to destroy the weave, it was just the spell wasn't able to get to the power of any of the gods who weren't directly tied to the weave.
@@jarrodbright5231 So little from column A, little from column B in that situation? Yeah I could possibly see that. I certainly don't have all the facts down, but I do remember hearing somewhere that spell had the ability to draw from any of them, but was under the impression that he chose poorly rather than that being his only source. Personally I like the idea he chose poorly more, as it adds an extra degree of tragic hubris to the story. But if it's not how it's intended then it's not how it's intended.
Hi Wolf! I really like these lore vids. Id really like to see more, especially ones explaining history of Baldur's Gate. I seem to enjoy watching you play Early Access more than me playing it myself. Keep them coming!
I did not know that spells beyond levels 9/10 even existed. Interesting to know the background reason why mortals can't normally use magic more powerful than that. Good lore video!
Thank you for the video! Watched Ed Greenwood's video on the Netheril recently. Was interesting. Thank for informing that he has a channel on UA-cam, Wolfheart.
Small correction: Karsus's Avatar wasn't specifically designed to steal the divinity of the goddess of Magic. It was designed to collect the divinity from a god in general. "It turned out there was only one god the spell could draw the divine power from: the only one Karsus absolutely should not have drawn the power from, Mystryll the goddess of Magic". (I think I quoted it correctly - it's from memory) Second small correction: Mystra's Ban prevented the use of any spells above the 9th level, not 10th level (I'm sure that one was an honest typo?) It also appears that Mystra's Ban has been undone during the events of the Spellplague. It sure is a good thing there's no surviving Nethrese archmages still accessing the weave who might try something at some point... (nervous chuckle) Netheril is one of my favorite Realms topics and honestly this video could go for hours if it went into everything it could have covered... then another series of videos on the noteworthy "survivors" of Netheril. I think you did pretty well to keep this concise. And yes if an apparently teenage girl named "Tabra" turns up in BG3, possibly hanging out at some remote inn, I will literally squeal in delight.
Loving the lore series! The Netherese empire is so fascinating and im so happy you covered it. Thank you for all the hard work you put into all your videos Wolf! ❤
I love how literal the names of these events are in forgotten realms. It's like "flinkledorp cast a spell which incinerated a entire country, this was known as flinkledorps big fuck up"
i like these alot i wiki dive a decent amount while playing dnd games but i didnt know about this lore. i think when bg 3 comes out we could get a dark souls like lore era on youtube. you could become the vaatividya of baldurs gate xD
Since I first saw and played EA, I've had my mind set on Gale as the origin character I'll play in my first playthrough, so learning a bit about the Netherese is actually extremely helpful. I have a tendency to want to min/max my playthroughs in RPGs, which just seems foolish in a game like BG3. So I've decided the best way to play is to roleplay the character, and Gale is especially interesting in that he seems to mirror Karsus in more ways than just his folly. Curiosity is what drives wizards and makes them who they are, and so often that curiosity leads to their ruin. Gale seems like a pretty damn nice guy though, and having made mistakes akin to those of Karsus, would probably try to temper his curiosity and hunger for power such that it didn't bring harm to others. And yet, Gale's current dilemma pushes him to actively seek out, achieve and consume that power, so that he doesn't explode and eviscerate a whole lot more people - in much the same way that Karsus wanted to use his power to elevate his people and defeat the Phaerimm. It's such a cool clash of ideals, so I'm going to play Gale as someone who's morality and curiosity are in a constant conflict with each other. Edit: Thanks for the video! :D
Karsus's soul is bound to the material plane, thus he can become a warlock patron We CAN actually cast spells above 10th level.... theoretically.... Huge Rituals, that demand huge sacrifices and tens if not hudred of master level magic users are technically able to do so. I think Mystra allows it, 1. because its impossible, its impossible to see even 3-6 master level magic users in one place.. And if this were to commence, it would probably mean that something like this would really be needed. Since this ritual has really huge sacrifices, not just in bodies, but on those masters and if it goes wrong, its consequences are huge and wild.
Is the image of Karsus @ 5:48 a generic image or is it actually a likeness of Karsus? Because I recognize the image, the same image was used in an old favorite game called Fantasy Empires (1993). Yet I don't remember Karsus playing a role in it.
i think the netherese were the most sober people of their time.... when you live on a flying city, you don't want to do some Wolfheart-cliff-jumping after partying
I love these videos! Thank you so much! Also how freaking cool would it be to have a game like BG3 but using the Magic The Gathering universe?! Elminster reminds me of Urza
I saw several videos about Karsus Folly and for some reason nobody speaks of Neverwinter Nights 2, which had the King of Shadows who was also a result of Weave not existing for a moment. Used to be the Guardian who was created throught extremely torcherous process. And when the Weave was gone he turned to Shadow Weave to survive. And after that the empire that created him got scared and attacked him. Didn't go well for them. By the way, it's also connected to githyanki since one of their precious silver swords (The Gith Sword if I remember correctly) was used and shattered in a fight against the King of Shadows later. It's not super connected to the story of Baldur's Gate, but still it's an interesting bit of history and I think it's a pity nobody mentions that.
I was getting sad thinking that my all time favorite lich Larloch wouldn't be mentioned, and then... I heard His sanctified name, I could heard the angels... Also, Larloch's Crypt is pretty close to Baldurs gate 💀
Ah yeah!, I love the The Netherese lore :) Thank you for a new lore video!, How is the magic school lore video coming Wolf!?!?!?!? We need more MAGIC! here :D:D
One thing to note, Karsus didn't complete fail in his quest as there's information in 5E that Karsus became a Great Old One and is one of the possible Great Old One patrons a Warlock can have.
Unless I'm mistaken (and I did just do a quick check to make sure I wasn't remembering incorrectly) Karsus is not available as a Great Old One pact, but you can select him for an Ancient Archmage pact. This is not an official 5E subclass but one a lot of DMs allow. There are also some homebrew subclasses for Warlocks making a pact with Karsus When he died, Karsus's spirit was not claimed by any god and was refused entry to the Fugue Plain (it seemed he rather annoyed every god out there). His soul was instead bound to the Prime Material Plane where it can be contacted though a ritual by those who wish to make a pact with him to draw on his power. He is not in the Far Realms.
@@jarrodbright5231 He's not under the name Karsus, but something else, but it's definitely Karsus. I can't remember exactly what it says, but the information says for that particular Great Old One that they tried to become a god of magic, but the ritual went awry as the original god of magic fought back.

When you come back could you please let me know a little bit about those food packs , they seem like they'd be a great option. Have fun. Soak up the rays I wish you and yours the best experience.
Why is it that greed and hunger for power seems to be the #1 cause for the demise of empires/kingdoms? One would think that by this time people would have learned not to repeat history.
So as the lore goes, back in the old days of the Realms it was possible to learn spells of level 10 and upwards. These spells were extremely powerful but also very difficult and time consuming to cast. They also had to be custom created (or learned through risking one's sanity by reading the Nether Scrolls). Think of it as a DM approving random homebrew spells from level 20 players but making them so hard to cast it was a whole adventure campaign to be able to do so. In gaming terms, these were a thing in AD&D 2E. Back to the lore, until Karsus's Folly was cast it was thought that 11th level spells were the highest possible. Theory is there are also 13th level spells possible. I've also been (somewhat reliably) informed that at the end of the Spellplague Mystra's Ban was removed and so the restrictions on higher level spells with it. I haven't seen official WotC or unofficial Ed Greenwood confirmation on that though.
Many more lore vids to come 🙏

Thanks for another lore vid, Wolf! Hope you have a good week off and congrats to your sis🎉
Thank you
They also heavily mistreated the gnomes.
Karsus's soul is bound to the material plane, thus he can become a warlock patron
We CAN actually cast spells above 10th level.... theoretically....
I love this lore series. Thankyou for the effort to make them Wolfheart. 👍
Cheers
Excellent as always.
Thanks
Thanks for watching
Darn that was new to me. Well done
Thanks for another lore video!
Is the image of Karsus @ 5:48 a generic image or is it actually a likeness of Karsus? Because I recognize the image, the same image was used in an old favorite game called Fantasy Empires (1993). Yet I don't remember Karsus playing a role in it.
the snacko for good old algo
hey Angie you got the hot rimes today
from the right side of the rhein you say
Gale and Karsus seems to be linked in a way ... same ambitions of power
Makes one wonder just how old Gale really is doesn't it?
@@jarrodbright5231 if he used to be able to go in the Astral plane, where time does not make you age ... Makes wonder so many theories 😉
i think the netherese were the most sober people of their time....
when you live on a flying city, you don't want to do some Wolfheart-cliff-jumping after partying
I look forward to hearing about the Dragonborn and how they came about.
Very nice, thank you!
This game is going to be so rad...but I am waiting till Christmas or maybe next year to buy it. I am saving my money for Starfield first and foremost.
I’m confused which planet the battle between the floating sky mage folks and the dune worms is on…anyone help?
Great video, Wolf. As always.
Thanks as always Mark
I love these videos! Thank you so much! Also how freaking cool would it be to have a game like BG3 but using the Magic The Gathering universe?! Elminster reminds me of Urza
Fantastic bit of lore!
Well done video Wolf!
🙏
The reason why many probably don’t mention it is because many video games / third party forgotten realms stuff is not canon.
@@WolfheartFPS Neverwinter Nights 2 isn't a part of the lore?.. Well, that sucks. (
I was getting sad thinking that my all time favorite lich Larloch wouldn't be mentioned, and then... I heard His sanctified name, I could heard the angels...
Also, Larloch's Crypt is pretty close to Baldurs gate 💀
Will have to look more into Laloch's crypt!
These lore vids are great!
Best BG3 content creator, right here!
Skal
Ah yeah!, I love the The Netherese lore :) Thank you for a new lore video!, How is the magic school lore video coming Wolf!?!?!?!? We need more MAGIC! here :D:D
One thing to note, Karsus didn't complete fail in his quest as there's information in 5E that Karsus became a Great Old One and is one of the possible Great Old One patrons a Warlock can have.
will have to look more into this
Unless I'm mistaken (and I did just do a quick check to make sure I wasn't remembering incorrectly) Karsus is not available as a Great Old One pact, but you can select him for an Ancient Archmage pact. This is not an official 5E subclass but one a lot of DMs allow. There are also some homebrew subclasses for Warlocks making a pact with Karsus
When he died, Karsus's spirit was not claimed by any god and was refused entry to the Fugue Plain (it seemed he rather annoyed every god out there).
What if I cast wish for the knowledge and components in order to cast 12th level spells?
love Baldur's Gate 3 Countent❤❤
thank you
Okay crazy theory but hear me out. What if there was an option that Gale wasn't fed his magical artifacts and that was a way to end the game?
Love the lore video
Thanks!
👍 awesome!
Hey! I am actually away on her wedding trip right now and the wedding is on Thursday. Nice trip so far. Thanks a lot and hey nothing wrong with waiting for release. I wish I could re-live my first time Bg3 experience.
@@WolfheartFPS Great dude have an excellent time. I thought you were already back because of the video that released. Yes indeed, waiting will be worth it , I just wish so many great games were coming out. When you come back could you please let me know a little bit about those food packs , they seem like they'd be a great option. Have fun. Soak up the rays I wish you and yours the best experience.
Why is it that greed and hunger for power seems to be the #1 cause for the demise of empires/kingdoms?
One would think that by this time people would have learned not to repeat history.
its in our blood no matter how hard we try to fight it :-D
@@WolfheartFPS Unfortunate but true.
Awooooooooo Wolf n Pack
awooo
Ah yes, a story about my ancestors.
Cheers

Where can I read these stories?
So many places. The forgotten realms wiki does a great job compiling all sources together.
Is it just me or does creating a floating city seem like an incredible stupid idea?!
a skal to the pack

What is 11th level spell?
Karsus 🧑🚀dundundundun dundundun
This has nothing to do with the video but who here is hoping for a Xbox version?
I don't have an xbox but yes I am hoping that it is announced sometime soon
Great vid, aside from the aweful pronounciations, thanks for the vid!

Any chance u could narrate these vids without numbing with spit constantly like u have a mouthful of food
