I always wanted to learn how to quilt and brought a few books through the years, but after reading them I felt overwhelmed by all the instructions. COVID came along and I found your book "Quilt As You Go Made Modern." While hanging out at home, I tried your method and now I'm hooked. Since then I quilted 2 table runners, 3 lap throws and now working on a queen size quilt for our bed. Your instructions are clear, easy to follow. Thank you!
I received this morning the two books Quilt as you go made modern and Quilt as you go made vintage I have ordered from Amazon. I do not regret my purchase. All the projects are really beautiful and interesting. The explanations are clear and the pictures are great . When Quilt as you go made clever will be still available I wil buy it. Thank you Jera for your books.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have never quilted before because I just couldn’t get the very corners lined up and the whole project just seem so overwhelming to even try! This method is such a nice low pressure way to build a quilt. I have this book and I love that the author has actually shown us how she does it. Wonderful! I have the confidence now to make a small quilt. Thank you so much!
This method is awesome my mom quilted old school all her life fist by hand then up in late years couldn’t do by hand and she started doing it on her machine. I wish she had lived to see this simple way for the quilting part she would have been unstoppable
I’ve made 6 toddler quilts this year using your video and this book from the library. I like it so much and the blankets are my kids’ favorites! We’ve made some together to give as gifts as well.
Love the fabric, lace is so cute, Jera is a doll. My concern with adding the backing on at the end is 1) you don't get to see beautiful quilting on the back of your quilt and 2) it does not eliminate the need for me to struggle with a large quilt on my small machine.
I agree - to me this is not traditional QAYG, which quilts the whole square with the backing and then you only have to deal with joining one row at a time, so it fits into a domestic machine. It's very pretty but the backing could easily have been added while the quilting was being done IMHO.
@@GlammyBee Look at Monica Poole's channel on UA-cam - she has a very easy to follow style and lots of different ways to QAYG. She always quilts each block individually, through the top, batting and backing, and then they are sewn together in various ways. so when all are attached the quilt only needs binding. Poole Pattern TV the channel is called. :)
Thank You so much!! i took quilting classes years ago. I recently made a Quilt as you Go however, kind of forgot how to put it all together. So glad I came across your video. Fingers crossed I can get a nice, flat, beautiful quilt like yours.
This was fantastic. I just love quilt as you go. If works so well if you want to finish your quilt yourself rather than send it out to be quilted or if you do not have a long arm quilting machine of your own. Loved the way the backside came out.
Kimberly, This was a wonderful tutorial. I purchased this book several months ago to read about another QAYG method. Seeing the author actually demonstrate her method has been so helpful and inspiring. Thank you!
Love this instructional video. Absolutely fantastic companion to Jera Brandvig’s “ Quilt As-You-Go Made Modern” and I also really like her “Quilt As-You-Go Made Vintage”. This is my first foray into QAYG and her books are full of hints.
Jena seems to be a charming and very nice quilter ... What we need more of in this world is nice people who treat others well and play it safe, honest, responsible and do not harm others ....
Beautiful....I use this method on my t-shirt quilts and call it stitch 'n flip. BTW, if you leave a margin of 1" around the perimeter of the backing, you can just bring it forward to the front, fold the edge 1/4 " under and stitch it down on the top. Voila....no binding strips to make!!
Mel Mack I’m intrigued by the inch around the perimeter for the edge. I will have to consult my sewing friends for this but it sounds very helpful. Thank you
Just happened on this video. What a great tutorial! I love the addition of lace. I was looking for a fast and pretty baby quilt and this fits the bill. Thanks so much for this video!
I fell in love with this book when it first came out, so nice to see this on video. My sewing machine broke when I made a rag quilt with flannel fabric because it could not handle the bulk of sewing so many layers together. If you’re not sure, I recommend trying this technique first with the thinnest loft batting and a needle and thread combination that can also handle sewing through all those layers, ESPECIALLY at the seam intersections.
I love this idea. I really like your choice of the fabric. I am new to sewing but I certainly want to try this. Thank you for the explanation about the batting.
I have been away from quilting for almost 1 year, and am glad I watched this little video. Great ideas, I will try this quilt Thanks for the efforts and the lace on this little quilt is a fantastic addition

great QAYG for sure! "Stitch in the Ditch" may weaken the connecting block stitches. I'd follow a few of the diamond patterns and gently cross over the block meeting seams to the next triangle. Just my opinion, but I've heard this from some seasoned award winning quilters.
Yes, and also some people teach "stitch in the ditch" where they sew right next to the seam and not right on it and then they don't compromise the seam.
This is a great technique to finish a quilt and it looks good. I am going to try it soon for sure. I thank you for your clever way of sharing and talents to sew a beautiful quilt as a gift.
I enjoyed the video. I bought your book on Kindle and thought I would try the process. I have a difficult time quilting on my home machine, due to health issues. I did a trial square this evening and was impressed on how easy it was. Starting a baby quilt in the morning. Your book has some traditional blocks that I like and lots of cool ideas. Thanks, Mary
Very good video. I really like Jera's method for QAYG. However, I believe sewing strips to batting is enough 'quilting' for blocks this size. But, it's still nice to add echo stitching, if you don't mind more sewing. Not too sure about adding lace, but to each his/her own...Great suggestion with rotating mat AND trimming all corner seams on the back to reduce bulk. Thank you for all of your great tips!
