this piece had such a massive impact on me during a very important part of my life. i'm saddened to hear about ryuichi sakamoto's passing. his work is so beautiful and will be with me for the rest of my life.
As artists, we live forever through our work. Even long after our deaths, so long as we're able to touch the hearts of even a single person through our art, it's like we've never been gone at all. Rest in peace, Sakamoto sensei ❤️
This is an utterly brilliant composition on any level you want to dissect it from. Ryuichi's use of that haunting melodic line against the changing chords, and its powerful transformation when he sings "millions are willing to give their lives." It's easily one of the most melancholic pieces I have ever heard, distilling the sheer horror and insanity of war into something divinely beautiful. If this piece can't bring a tear to your eyes, then probably no music can. Sylvian delivered a great set of lyrics and singing too and the movie itself was great too, as paindful as it was to watch.
its less about distilling the madness of war to the beautiful than about the importance of tolerating difference. the admiration of the other as pure difference, the sharing of one world that ends with death. thats what makes it poignant. and it extends to us all and every single relationship.
"millions are willing to give their lives" is an expression of the importance that person is, not just to the lover but attests to the power of the other to many others.
@@danielwa4819 You said that really well, I agree this movie is all about accepting differences, and it shows how rich life is if you do accept, because we are all human, we all laugh, cry and we make powerful relationships (to our own hearts).
RIP Ryuichi Sakamoto. While he constructed many compositions throughout his life, this one has a special place in my heart. He will be missed by many, but never forgotten🎹🎶🎼 MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. LAWRENCE
I first heard this song and music on a local FM station and immediatly bought the soundtrack, we saw the movie shortly after and the music was a powerful part of the movie. RIP Ryuchi Sakamoto
LYRICS: The wounds on your hands never seem to heal I thought all I needed was to believe Here am I, a lifetime away from you The blood of Christ, or the beat of my heart My love wears forbidden colours My life believes Senseless years thunder by Millions are willing to give their lives for you Does nothing live on? Learning to cope with feelings aroused in me My hands in the soil, buried inside of myself My love wears forbidden colours My life believes in you once again I`ll go walking in circles While doubting the very ground beneath me Trying to show unquestioning faith in everything Here am I, a lifetime away from you The blood of Christ, or a change of heart My love wears forbidden colours My life believes My love wears forbidden colours My life believes in you once again
I simply love this tune, o negai shimasu! Rest in peace, Ryuichi, you will be missed forever. My heart goes out to all you wonderful Japanese people! Totemo ii! This is the real stuff. 😢😅
unquestionably one of the most evocative, sumptuous soundtracks every composed. The two are them are perfect companions musically, for this song. Also, Ryuichi was AMAZING in that movie. I cried my face off.
Listen alone , pick up on every note, key change and emotion in both music and voice, listen alone with no distractions , then you may understand what I mean, This music will move you xx
It’s 23:51. The world is so scared due to COVID-19. So am I. It’s snowing outside. Heavily. I feel like we’ve started living in the alternative world. Listening to this version. Feel some things may be better. Anyway, whoever reads this, wish you health!
Lmao, what an exaggerated comment and cringey comment looking back. Just enjoy the music, and live your life. "The world is scared, and so am i" christ sakes, I didn't know I could find myself laughing to this song, but with these comments, i can't help it. LOL
" Lifetime " away from you ,,,, DS from their 1st album has probably touched every emotion some where, at some time , a personal thing i guess . The " Other side of Life ", i still to this day try to work out where that wants me to go and do.... My bitterst pill, saw Japan 7 times , and id been the previous night, they did two nights at Manchester apolo , then getting a ticket for the fairwel tour , it was tryng to get pink champagne during the Blitz ,,, I find listning to Oil on Canvas really hard ..... RIP Mick, what a genius
I remember playing the single record over and over again when I was living at my Mother-in-laws home before moving to the US, so 1987-1988. One side has this version, the other is the instrumental version. When I say over and over I mean sometimes all day! Haunting and beautiful, sad and poignant.
Missing DBowie and doing all I can to soothe the grief. It has been more than a year. Chanced upon these 2 greats, and I am a new fan of theirs. Thank you for sharing. Thank you DB, the film, the music and film artists, for UA-cam sharing platform, for the synchronicity.
It seems to me there’s a flavor of Nightporter song from David in this anthological tube which I hold dear to my heart ❤️ RIP Koichi S Live long Your Spirit ❤
The longing to be with the other as an impossibility due to difference, and at the end of the day the inevitability of death that collapses all differences to a shared fate. Mono no aware.
Mr. Sakamoto is known for his ties with Bossa Nova. He has taken part in Morelenbaum², a project of his long term cellist, Jacques, with whom he covered several Jobim's songs. 1. I've known about this movie for a very long time but never watched it because I guessed it was one of those movies I want to dedicate myself entirely and uninterrupted for the entire duration. I guess Christmas is now a perfect opportunity. 2. Can't believe it's from 1987, sounds like "early 2000s but a lot of effort went into this to make it an avant-garde song" but it's from 1987. Now I want to see it even more. Hopefully the movie stands out as much as the poster tells me it does, I'm expecting something "Lawrence of Arabia" or "The Legend of 1900" in terms of emotional experience. Farewell Mr. Sakamoto.

Speaking about the film...Totally underrated...Should be and considered a classic.Probably the inevitable similarities to "The bridge of the river Kwai" didn' t let that happen...But still, a great film and even more a brilliant music...

what a great world we live in without! David Sylvian!!!

Make sure to check out Japan. Sylvian was the vocalist in that band.
