    You are so talented. I taught myself to knit and purl, cast on and off but can't do anything else and my processing issues make a pattern all scrambled in my brain. When I retire, I hope to take a class to learn more. I live my life in the 1940s at home and would gladly bake bread, pies, cakes etc in exchange for a knitted sweater like you showed-the screen shows it to be a pale pink wich is glorious! I have yet to find that exchange person in my town, LOL. Thank you for sharing! Take care.

    I love working with yarn on a cone! Most of mine are on cones but I have never been so lucky to pick up a cone for a $1!!! The yarn you have on a cone would be best for a garment that doesnt risk stretching out. For instance, knees, elbows and seat (on a straight skirt or pants) will bag out. Ideally, a fuller skirt would work nicely. Be sure to knit it on smaller needles than you think so that stretching out of shape is less likely.

    • @vintageknittingparty
      @vintageknittingparty  Рік тому

      That’s amazing advice, thank you so much Edina! Do you think the waistband of a skirt would pose much of an issue if I knit it on smaller needles? I felt so lucky to pick up the cone :) I definitely take the chance to grab these things when I see them, but that’s how I end up with so much stuff!

      @@vintageknittingparty I would knit a waistband that you would be able to thread a 3/4 inch piece of elastic through it. I would do that no matter what yarn I was using for a skirt. I may even put it in a knit dress that had a defined waist. I am an avid sewist too. All my clothing made in fabric has reinforced areas in places that get strain such as the waist. My clothes last literally forever

    Love your podcast and 1940s patterns are my favourite type of patterns to knit. They just fit my body type and asthetic perfectly. I actually have both of the dress patterns you mentioned and have knit the first one. It's so beautiful. The second pinafore dress is on my list to knit, but I haven't done it yet.

    I grew up knitting lots of vintage patterns my Mum used to have, but unfortunately only have a few of those patterns with me now.
    Your colourwork socks as so cute. I hope to see your magic toadstools again if you decide you'll redo them. 🧦🍄

    Really enjoyed the podcast and your knits, current and future. I would opt for option 1 - a knitted dress. Reckon you would get excellent wear out of it on a sunny "wintery" day in Brisbane. From a fellow Aussie knitter based in Paris :)

    If you don't know the fiber content of your mystery yarn cone, I suggest you knit a couple of swatches and wash them, so you can tell if the fabric is suitable of making a garment.

    Chenille yarns can sometimes be a little delicate, so I think a cardigan, or a lightweight sweater would work well, but the yarn may be a bit delicate for a skirt. I have a 1960's style chenille sweater my Mum made for me and it has a lot of drape and I wash it by hand every time I need to clean it. Chenille does work well as a weft for weaving - I have a rigid heddle loom and made a cowl using sock yarn for the warp and chenille for the weft and I fulled it (lightly felted) it and it makes a more durable fabric that way.

    • @vintageknittingparty
      @vintageknittingparty  Рік тому +1

      Oh that is very helpful advice, thank you! I was leaning towards the pinafore but perhaps I’ll do some more research. I have no idea about it’s origins or whether the whole thing is in good condition or not, so I’ll probably be balling it up off the cone and inspecting whether there is any damage as I go :)

    • @janatherton9194
      @janatherton9194 Рік тому

      @@vintageknittingparty Maybe you could make a swatch and see how it handles and stands up to washing and abrasion, it looks like you have quite a large cone to work with.

    Hey there Lauren,
    Just stumbled over this video since i also like vintage stuff and sewing and knitting.
    About your mushroom socks and the three stranded colourwork i'd like to give you a hint if you're really thinking about redoing them (hope this doesnt come to late tho).
    I've done 3 stranded colourwork and could not find a pattern or explantion for it - i guess cause it us a bit tricky. In the head of the mushroom the white yarn is not used a often, so it will be difficult to get a good tension in it. Instead you could do 2 colours and stitch on the white dots later in a knit stitch. Also gives a nice 3D look to it.
    You got really sweet stuff btw!
    Liebe Grüße from Germany :) Jana

    • @vintageknittingparty
      @vintageknittingparty  Рік тому

      Hi Jana! Thank you so much for your comment, it hasn't come too late at all :) The pattern does suggest stitching them on later as an alternative, and I actually think this would make a big difference. I'm undecided on what I'm going to do because I'm a little sock-ed out but I will let you know :) Thank you again, and hello from Australia!

    Amazing first podcast, I cant wait to see more! Also, I love the idea of getting my yarn from the thrift shop and I had been until I found sweater moth larvae in yarn from the thrift. Do you treat or clean your yarn from the thrift in anyway I'd love to be able to continue buying second hand yarn.

    • @vintageknittingparty
      @vintageknittingparty  Рік тому

      Thank you so much! I definitely keep an eye out when I buy materials for any signs of nibbling. Everything goes in the sun or into the freezer for a while before going into my collection. We also don’t have carpet in our home and the place I store my yarn is very open, light and airy. So I’m not an expert at deterring them or cleaning my yarn, but I’m also fortunate enough to have never come across them to be honest! I have seen some people unwind their yarn in order to clean it and dry it in the sun, and then rewind it after it has dried if that helps x
