Hello friends! I have been on such a sock knitting kick, and as a result I have ended up with a bunch of scraps. I've been saving patterns on Ravelry to use up scraps and found so many beautiful ones that I thought I would share them with you. My aim with scrap-busting projects is always to use as much as possible, while still making them look intentional and beautiful. Please leave your scrapp...

Hello friends! I have wanted to make this video for the longest time. When I made my video about getting started with vintage patterns I knew that sizing was a huge barrier to me getting started, and that it is with many other people. Surely enough, I got loads of comments and messages with people saying that they just don't know where to start with resizing. I totally understood. Knitting and ...

Getting Started with Vintage Knitting Patterns

Hello friends! I have had so many lovely knitters reach out to me wondering about how to start using vintage patterns so I thought I would cover the basics of what a pattern from the 1940s looks like. I also touch on materials required, construction, and sizing. I feel each of these topics deserve their own videos, so I would love to hear your particular questions in the comments below! If you ...

    You seem so kind, I love listening to you ! I enjoy sewing my own wardrobe too. And I knit myself a beautiful moss green sweater in organic Shetland wool. I'm now making a linen cotton vest with kimono sleeves. It's a gamble, because I don't own anything like it, so I'm not sure I'll like wearing it... but I'm making it from two coupons (a light cotton canvas and a heavy linen) so I don't feel bad about experimenting.

    Lovely video, I really like the colours and patterns that you chose! Would you be open to making a video on gauge and vintage patterns and how to interpret it, how to choose the right yarn and needles etc? I'm a beginner knitter and I want to get into vintage knitting but I'm finding it a bit overwhelming.

    Great video! I'm a beginner knitter and I would love to start knitting from vintage patterns, I love wearing vintage clothing but as you said reproduction is not always accessible and I find vintage cuts so much more flattering. Would you say that going straight into vintage patterns as a beginner is difficult? Are there any patterns in particular that you would recommend for someone who hasn't knitted their first clothing item yet? Thanks!

    Great video, thanks (suscribed😊). I live in Chile and the oldest patterns I own are from a 1969 Argentinian book my mom gave me, so not thaaat old. I've also downloaded a couple of 1940s UK patterns but I haven't been brave enough to knit them 🤯 as you said, patterns back then asume you know how to knit because everybody did! My mom, who's 62, was taught to knit by her grandma and in school almost as a toddler...she can read any pattern and understand it immediately! So envious😂

    You are so talented. I taught myself to knit and purl, cast on and off but can't do anything else and my processing issues make a pattern all scrambled in my brain. When I retire, I hope to take a class to learn more. I live my life in the 1940s at home and would gladly bake bread, pies, cakes etc in exchange for a knitted sweater like you showed-the screen shows it to be a pale pink wich is glorious! I have yet to find that exchange person in my town, LOL. Thank you for sharing! Take care.

    Your channel just showed up in my feed today, so i have been watching a few of your older videos. With regards to your high instep, i have one too and have learnt that you can still knit the sock size for the rest of your foot and just lengthen the heel flap (which also puts more stitches in your gusset). This gives you the extra sizing you need for your instep without compromising the fit for the rest of your sock. I hope this helps you. ❤

    One problem with resizing…if you add considerably more stitches and follow the decreases for the armholes the shoulder seam will be too wide. So you need to work out the size required and decrease accordingly.

    • @vintageknittingparty
      @vintageknittingparty 9 місяців тому

      How wonderful to have such a collection! I buy A4 sized backing boards and plastic sleeves on eBay which are meant for comic books. They’re archival quality and acid free, and it keeps them dust free and standing up straight in a box so they don’t crinkle. Just make sure the cardboard is acid-free so it doesn’t react with the paper of the patterns. I hope this helps!

I'm in love with the cardigan you're wearing in the beginning of the video - i reckon you can't sell it for copyright reasons. Would you mind sharing the source so I could potentially look for it? So nice to hear from you again! Hopefully whatever you make for "summer" you don't throw out of your winter wardrobe. I find my 4ply vintage garments are still staples in winter, i just wear them with thermals under or a coat over. In Brisbane i would think they would get more wear that way as it probably is a bit hot for wool in summer? That said, i know i do wear my vintage wool things in Adelaide summer, but mainly the short sleeves ones. I'm really looking forward to seeing how your 3ply knits up. I was thinking of buying some but i have enough stash. I was actually thinking to specifically try the classic because i have found the luxury to be maybe a little too soft and pilly, whereas my hard-wearing british lambswool cones have been producing garments that don't pill at all. Anyhoo, really looking forward to seeing your next project when you are able to get started again!

Thanks for stating the yarn your going to knit in your up and coming projects but also the ply and the color. It really allows me to see the colors and patterns that you have chosen. I love the colors you choose. I live in the Pacific Northwest USA 🇺🇸 and Bendigo yarn is wonderful, affordable and love quality. I plan to buy more especially if they widen their color range. Sizing was limited too because, in the UK, rationing went throughout the war and well into the 1950s. There just wasn't as much food around, or cars so everyone walked and a gym was the guy down the road in the Dog & Duck pub. Lol, you are completely right about assuming everyone knew how to resize because knitting used to be taught in schools then and up until the late 1970s.

    The thing about the chunky jumpers is most of them are simple knits. Vintage knits are time consuming but they're intricate, beautiful and usually involve a great deal of skill. Anyone can knit a top down raglan sweater on size 5mm with the occasional YO/ssk, what you do takes precision. Be proud of your knits because they're stunning and not following the trend for plain, boring beige. I've just found your podcast and I'm thrilled. Good luck with your aspirational knits and I look forward to seeing more of them.
