    ---
    A female American Kestrel doles out a meal to her four nestlings. One of the chicks goes for a ride at 1:35 after biting off more than it could chew, but the female takes special note to return the youngster to the warm confines of her care at 6:30.
    Watch the cams live at www.allaboutbirds.org/cams
    The American Kestrel cam is a collaboration between the Cornell Lab or Ornithology and the Raptor Resource Project.
    Four downy American Kestrel nestlings are tucked into a gravel-bottomed nest on private property near Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. The nest box is located on the side of a traditional limestone-footed barn, overlooking a rolling grassland that slopes away into folded hills and forests. Our partners at the Raptor Resource Project have watched kestrels breed at this site for over 25 years, and the wonderful combination of grassland, forest, and water that surrounds the property is an excellent example of the habitat that kestrels need to survive and thrive. Watch cam.
    The young birds began hatching out of their eggs on June 14th, and the remaining egg in the nest is unlikely to hatch at this point. Over the next 3-4 weeks the nestlings will transform from downy bobbleheads to sleek, dull versions of their parents on a diverse diet of invertebrates, small mammals, and birds (watch this highlight of the female feeding the young). After fledging, the young will continue to be cared for by their parents, remaining near the nest as they learn to hunt and master flight.
    Don't miss the outside view! A second camera has been installed to give views of the nest box opening from the outside so viewers can observe the kestrels' comings and goings, as well as the nestlings once they begin peering outside. To toggle between the two camera views, click the "switch camera" icon in the lower right of the livestream player, next to the settings wheel.

      Teresa Pren that’s how they ensure survival. They make sure the strongest one gets the food. It’s necessity. They act on survival. Plus if a chick refuses food, or doesn’t show interest, basically good instincts or behavior that would convince the parent of its chances of survival, it’s considered defective and waste of effort and resources. They are not like us, who have plenty of time and resources. They generally have to act on necessity. The parent does eventually feed the other chicks but top priority is to the strongest chick. Later on, when the surviving chicks are more developed and tuned, the parent can then afford to feed them more evenly, provided it’s convinced that the chicks will continue to survive and be able to fend for itself.

      @@hiibillymayshere4238 Kestrels are known to feed all of their young equally, yes, sometimes during one meal one will get more food or all the food, but kestrels are very carefull about feeding all of their young. SchockWave ZERO is not wrong about all birds, some do not feed the smallest and weakest, but not kestrels, kestrels always try to feed them all (and if there's lack of food, they will kill the weakest to feed the strongest). Do a little research, it won't hurt.

    I have to say, after watching videos of Bald Eagles & Ospreys in the nest for several months, I am astounded by the behavioral characteristics of the American Kestrel. The adult female is extremely attentive & intuitive. I was really surprised to see her drag the errant runt back to the fold. But I've not seen this kind of aggressive, competitive behavior in offspring of Eagles & Ospreys. In those nests, feeding time is much more orderly, with the chicks waiting patiently for a morsel from the parent. Of course there is "bonking" & the occasional "hissy fit" as they grow, but I've not seen this kind of free-for-all feeding frenzy, with chicks engaged in a winner take all tug-of-war with entrails. Unlike Eagle & Osprey chicks, Kestrel chicks can swallow very large items with little difficulty!

    • @ias400
      @ias400 6 років тому

      Robert, an interesting observation, but I do wonder if this is just an artifact of there being 4 chicks instead of 2, when there are more chicks (in osprey or peregrine nest for example) there is usually more aggression.

    • @sardu55
      @sardu55 6 років тому +2

      This group had an unusually aggressive runt (smallest) chick who paid no attention to nest pecking or behavior order and just went full blast, all the time, at all the food. Normally it would have fallen in behind the larger chicks and 'in its place'. Not this guy. Here he's at it from the start. Not more than a few days after this it was stealing food from the others, taking it right out of the parents mouth and then 'mounting' its stolen prey much like other raptors. It was also aggressive, not just with food but towards the others. In short, it demonstrated very strange mean and aggressive behavior. The others, who were all 'normal' didn't know what to do with this evil runt in their nest. The older chicks seemed to let it be but eventually took runs at it just to get some food. The runt grew fast and soon was bigger than #3 and later, #2. Strange nest.

    Wow, that chick is so lucky to have such a good parent. I mean, when the smallest chick wandered away from the warmth and protection it had, the adult watched it and then gently dragged it back into the safety of the scrape and the warm underbelly of the adult bird.
    I think the male American Kestrel is one of the most stunning birds of prey. I thought this was a male at first but then had to check when I noticed the rusty brown patch on top of the blue/grey head colour.
    More often than not, the species are the same wherever, but I have to say that the male American Kestrel is so much more of a bonny bird than the UK Kestrel (also very handsome).

    Whoa.. Color me impressed.. 👍🌟Even if this is 4 yrs old.. Seeing the momma carry her youngest falcon back to her safety was outstanding! I wish eagles could do this.. Never seen it demonstrated b4. Dare I ask if all four made it to fledging? 🌹 😘

      No those mothers are not mothers for all life. When those chikls will be grown up, she will forget them and have new ones which she will forget as soon as mature enough to fend for themselves. Maybe, before being adults, some will lose her attention because to weak, too small, too many in the nestling.... There is no love. At all. Just a matter of survival for the species. She broods, raises and feeds for the specie, not for the love of the hatchlings. And some mothers even let the biggest kill the smallest while feeding it as if the smallest was meant for the strongest as training and also to save a hunt to the mother. Some watch one of the small ones on the side of the nest and don''t even make a move to get it back to warmth although the baby is worth and in good shape. The baby snuff it in total indifference. All that is a matter of instinct and cruelty.

      В начале Бог создал небо и землю. Земля была безлика и пуста, над поверхностью глубоких вод была тьма, и над водой действовал дух Бога. Бог сказал: «Пусть будет свет». И появился свет. Бог создал два великих светила: большее светило, чтобы оно управляло днём, и меньшее светило, чтобы оно управляло ночью, а также звёзды. И Бог создал огромных морских существ, и всех живых существ, которые наполняют воды, по их родам, и всех крылатых существ по их родам. И Бог увидел, что это хорошо... и т. д...

    Few things in nature rile me up more than watching a chick feeding. To summarize my angst:
    Chick #1 - -Big; Strong, Energetic; constantly leans over the top to snag food; keeps chicks #2 & #3 irrelevant: 22 serv
    Chick #2 -- Small; Fragile; Weak; on 2nd bite, mom snatched food back, sent chick hurdling, on ass, lands outside of feeding area: 2 serv
    Chick #3 -- Small, Fragile, Very Weak, Confused; in poor shape, chick is completely turned around backwards: 2 serv
    Chick #4 -- Avg Size; Avg Strength; Avg Energy; This chick looks good/healthy: 10 serv
    Mom -- Mom, who is out hunting and expending energy, but still, she consumed a great deal of the vole: 12 serv
    Mom broke off approximately 48 servings. In terms of servings, the big, bully chick got served 22 times, but when you watch the video, his percentage in terms of volume of food was far greater as he seemed to grab some very large bites. The chick that went flying...she was lucky enough to get 2 servings fairly early, because after she went flying, she was completely out of the game...she did not get another single serving. The other pretty healthy chick, on the end nearest the camera, came way with 12 servings. Unfortunately, the one chick that appears in the most trouble early on...she has very little energy, gets knocked around quite easily, doesn't vocalize as loudly, she seems fragile, weak, and honestly, even confused. She got nothing, until almost the very end, where she was able to get 2 servings, although one looked like it was mostly fur.
    This is why bird feedings drive me crazy, and why I hate sibling rivalry with chicks. I know that other feedings sometimes go in the other direction, and chicks that were shutout this time may get the lion's share the next, but that is almost never the case. The first guy that is born, who creates that rapport with mom & dad first, whose call/whistle mom & dad recognize early on, who already understands the routine, who is often a day or two ahead in feedings (which, does not sound like a lot, but when you are the recipient of 100% of feedings for an entire day or two, when keeping in mind that feedings are often done multiple times per hour, every waking hour, it sometimes happens where the first chick is twice the size of subsequent chicks due only to this detail of birthing first).

    Look at these fucking dinosaurs, the pecking order based on size and aggression, the way they move, the white coating of fuzz. Birds will never go extinct... some species might... but birds as a whole can always find a way.
