Naw, the manga is 10x more depressing. If you look into the Tokyo Ghoul Lore, you will find out that there was a harmless 14 year old kid named Rio who was friends with the folks at Anteiku; he is now the psychopathic, broken side character Rio. I feel like he should have gotten more attention..
