  • This short video is a comparison of Harbor freights 100 Thunderbolt solar panels verses Renogy's Eclipse 200 watt solar suit case. 200 watt verses 200 watts and watch how impressive the HF panels get when hooked up to a MPPT charge controller mounted in my trailer and also using a Eco flow power station. Be sure to like subscribe and leave a comment if you have questions or if you have information you would like to share. “CORRECTION” . I also mistakenly said Andersen connector Which the one cut off was a SAE connector. Was playing with battery connectors earlier…😂🤷♂️ #solar#Renogy#HarborFreight

    I've got "200 watts" worth of harbor freight flat mounted on my roof. 2 years later I can say. The charge controller in their Kit SUCKS. But...they are damn useful. I have lights, device charging and super important.. FANS. I had to replace charge controller. But the actual panels have proven to be super useful and durable, despite a couple of brutal hail storms.

    I bought four of these today, 4/10/22. They are on sale yesterday and today for $89 per panel. Not bad. I figure these, along with a Bluetti AC200MAX, will give me a good start on emergency power for the house to keep food frozen. Additionally, it will pair nicely with the solar setup I have in my camping rig.

    I started buying H-F panels when they came in packs of 3 for 90 watts total for about $99 and added a total of 18 panels (I think the last set cost $139). All the sets come with their own controller. I live off grid and feed the panels into a bank of 6 each 80 amp NiCad batteries and run a 5000W/10000 surge inverter. I feed the battery bank with a Champion 3500 W gen powering a 100 amp battery charger as a back up but rarely use it.
    I also put in a 500 wat wind generator but have found the money would have been better spent with more solar panels. This is a poor mans set up but it works great and I can't complain about the cost (less than $2000). The H-F solar panels have held up great in spite of hail, freezing, hot 100* and snow.

    Where you will see the difference between these two panels is in conversion efficiency. Renogy uses monocrystalline cells and HF uses a cheaper polycrystalline technology. The monocrystalline cell will produce more energy in less than ideal conditions such as cloudy days and or orientation of the panel. It's still a cost vs benefit decision, for me, if I had $500- $600 to spend on solar I would go for twice the capacity with HF panels.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 роки тому +70

    I bought 2 Renogy Eclipse panels 5 years ago. They died within 2 years. It took forever to replace them and I needed new ones on the camper so I replaced them with 2-100 watt Rich poly panels. When I finally got the Renogy panels, I decided to make a suitcase setup with them. I drilled 6-1/8" holes in the frames for hinges. The panels died within two years again. When I returned them they voided the warranty and never returned the panels. Had they been prompt in returning the first panels, I wouldn't have bought the Rich Solar panels. I will never do business with Renogy again. BTW: The Rich poly panels are still cranking out great power.

I use an inverter to use the toaster,(450 watt), and an 800 watt microwave occasionally.

    I own two Renogy 100w solar suitcase portable panels with those Sun (type) mono cells. They are beasts for power AFTER you replace the cheap diodes in them. Excellent in lower light levels, but pricey. The hardware also needed replaced and rivits needed corrosion control (sanding and painted) after light use outside. They rusted out. Higher MPPT panel volts always makes more juice...but, for small(ish) set ups, PWM is fine. Renogy DOES make a very good PWM lithium battery solar charge controller.

      This is more about how quickly it can charge a storage unit… “batteries “
      Which if you have a small battery bank you need a big solar system to keep up. Verses a big battery bank with have plenty of storage to power a item even if the power coming in isn’t much the storage bank will be ok as long as you don’t plan to run a certain item for hours.
      Imagine a lake….a dam… and rain…
      Water in = solar

I use my gaming laptop all night long, and run a split air conditioner 5 or 6 hours a night while I sleep, barely any power in the morning but it charges while I'm at work. I park where I work in Detroit. Last year I saved 63000 in cash. Every Friday I remove my money from the card and bury it in special made money container u can buy on Amazon, they are made to store cash underground. Screw banks, they will limit the amount you can spend if the gov is worried about a run on banks. Like a few countries did last year limited people to 100 dollars or whatever a day. Or if you owe bills and they sue you they will close your bank account

    The solar suitcase is a classic case of "nearly free" design adding value.
    You really need to set the height and then see how much they generate during an entire day. The instantaneous power when perfectly adjusted isn't as realistic as a whole day test. I'd be interested in how much capacity of a standard battery they filled over the course of a full day (or even a set of a few days). (It's early in the video so now that I see the delta, maybe you are going to do that.)
    Also... you can "adjust" the harbor freight by a few degrees plus or minus by putting a tile or brick under the legs or under the base of the panel.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 роки тому +1

      I have though about this but would be hard to measure the amount from two different set ups as the controller would also have to work relatively the same and also loading what ever storage unit you wanna put the power in. So those as well would have to be as close to a certain discharge level so each unit could charge at the same rates where the controller optimization feeds each battery or power station the same.
      I think

    I just bought a converted camper van for $800 off fb marketplace. It came with two 100w renogy panels, a nice 12v 200Ah battery, and a 200w inverter (2000w surge).
    It also has a small kitchenette with a sink, micro fridge and microwave. The back of the van houses a queen sized bed frame with a brand new memory foam mattress, and the floors inside were redone with hardwood.
    Literally felt like I was robbing the seller. But... I didn't pay cash. I acquired the van through trade.
    A friend of mine was on hard times in 2020, and they decided to sell their car. They were so strapped for cash they were selling the car for nearly scrap price - so I bought it for $800. The intention was to hold on to it and sell it back to them once they stabilized.
    That never happened, they spiraled out of control. We are no longer friends, and there's nothing I can do for them. So the car just sat in my driveway unused.
    Talking to the person selling the van, I found out they dropped the price so low just so they could put a down payment on a used car at a lot. This seller had moved to my state with a partner who then abandoned them.
    I was really interested in the van already, so I asked if they would take a trade. My unused sedan for their camper van.
    It was a perfect match.
    I didn't need a third "family car," and the seller didn't need a converted camper van. We met at my place, traded titles, then got our vehicles inspected and registered together.
    I feel like I won because I got a cool van I can take camping. The seller feels like they won because they got a whole car for the price of a down payment. And neither of us have any payments. I got rid of this car that's been sitting in my driveway, and the seller has something reliable they can use for work every day. The exchange was perfect.

    made a couple of discoveries you might find
    of interest.
    1-The most popular solar panels are the 100 watt
    -due to their affordability. HO|W|EVER, after studying
    all different size panels I discovered that the bigger
    panels generate more watt per square inch than the
    100s. SO, dollar for dollar altho the 100s are affordable
    the bigger panels give you more bang for your buck.
    I'm talking the 320 -350 watt panels.

    This video is great for people that are a bit savvy around electrical things. I need more basic, practical info because I am not mechanical at all and I hate electricity. I bought 2 HF 100w panels about 2 years ago. Never took them out of the box. Also bought a controller. Didn’t buy a battery because I knew I wouldn’t be using it for a while. At some point I need to test this thing. Still don’t know what I could use it for except to charge phones. Will it keep my freezer cold also? I see a couple meters being use to gauge output. Honestly, I wouldn’t know how to use one. So you can see the need for very remedial videos.

    I believe the differences between those two panels goes deeper than just amps and voltage . The way the cells are wired is the biggest difference I know of , if a shadow were to hit one side of the panel the harbor freight panels would stop producing power if one cell in the series get shaded where the Renogy panels can get shaded on one side and still produce charge mainly because of the way the cells are wired together .

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 роки тому +7

      They still produce if shaded just not as much obviously. Same with the renogy.

      They will work for a lot of stuff. And solar panels of all brands have been coming down.
      Depending what you wanna do or need look into residential used solar panels. You can get a lot more watts for way cheaper then a renogy or Hf panel. These are good if you need portable stuff. But 100 or even 200 watts is not enough. 200 is bare minimum because after the cells settle you will only get about 180ish watts on the best days.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 роки тому +1

      Totally agree, especially for off grid or sheds and more. For Rv or recreational use these smaller panels are more for portability and weight. The residential panels at 335 or 355 or up to 400 watts can weigh more then two 200 watt panels. So that’s the only reason I would recommend a smaller portable over just getting residential type panels.
      They are typically heavier to withstand harsh weather for years including hail.

    • @Ry-lx2kl
      @Ry-lx2kl 2 роки тому +1

      @@johnnysweekends I also agree there are space concerns especially with RV's that have a lot of obstacles poking through the roof. I don't think weight is too big of a concern especially if the trade off is a much more durable panel. I managed to squeeze (5) 400w panels onto the roof of my tool truck conversion with 17' of available roof. I was able to design what pokes through the roof where so I could make optimum use of the real estate.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 роки тому +1

      Nice. With a Rv though which I guess people don’t care about cargo capacity because I see them over loaded all the time, but a few solar panels at 60lbs each takes away from over all items you get to bring. So 4 panels plus mounts and racking, wiring, batteries inverters and more, you could burn 350-600 lbs from say a 2250 lb capacity. But it’s not my trailer, I can only tell people what the item is and it’s up to them to make the safe choice.

    Solar panels are just like everything else. The price you pay is for the name that's glued on them. Watts are watts. Maybe you get a little better build quality but if you don't abuse the cheap ones they'll last just as long. If you have a bad storm it will destroy both of them. I didn't buy harbor freight panels, I got mine on amazon for about .70 a watt. And you have the solar charge controller I do. It's worked perfect.

    NO!!! Wrong!!!
    Amps alone do NOT make more power.
    You want the most WATTS period.
    As long as your wires are large enough the voltage does not matter. Higher voltage does have the advantage of using smaller wire for the same load in watts.
    So, which ever panel is delivering the most watts is the better panel.

    • @KuptisOriginal
      @KuptisOriginal 2 роки тому

      So watts is equal to amps times volts (P = I x V) so for the same amount of watts increasing the voltage will decrease the amperage and vice versa. So, yes, everything you said is correct.

    I’ve been trying to understand powering a house with solar …. I understand wiring and electrical to a decent degree but I want to figure out how to power everything in my home even if it’s turning things off to use like the water heater…. Basically just survival and using amenities for my family of 6

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 роки тому +1

      Yea you need a decent setup of running high power items like heaters or dryer or microwave and AC units. Those are big draw items. Heaters and microwaves and hair dryers all draw about 1500-1700 watts which over a hour is a lot of power.
      So Solar provides DC power. We use micro inverters to flip the power or invert it to Ac. It’s power goes to your panel or a sun panel and to the grid. So if the grid shuts off your solar is still making power but no we’re to properly store it or run anything. In simple terms anyway.
      Hence you need batteries to store the extra power so at night or power outages the batteries are ready to go.
      If needing a decent amount of power then residential panels are the way to go.. and not these little panels that are meant for light weight stuff and being portable.
      At a dollar a watt it’s not very price savvy as buying something for .50 cents a watt or even less

    In my race car trailer I have a 75ah battery or so and am going to add 200w solar for charging the battery for the lights/radio/winch/car while at the track or while stored. My trailer has power from tow vehicle also. I am thinking about a DC to DC charger with MTTP. 20 or 30 amp in case of adding another panel. Should I do it that way or just rely on the solar and unhook charge wire from tow vehicle and use stand alone controller? The battery should always be charged before a trip if solar is active or trailer hooked is up to shore power and solar is off, so charging on the road really is not needed. I really am studying your videos, great content. Thanks,

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Рік тому +1

      I would just use the solar. You could leave tow vehicle charge wire there as it will still provide Dc current to the battery at the proper battery voltage for lead acid but not Lithium. So it would only charge to about 85-90%. But could help it out.
      But 200 watts of solar will do fine keeping it charge and then maybe just carry a really small generator in case you need a pinch of power. Or a bigger one if you need it for race items. Air compressor and more for race days.

    You can put the two renogy panels in series and get 38.5V out of the pair and get about 16-17.5A out of those Eclipse panels at 12V with a good MPPT charge controller and peak sun. I have the same ones hooked to a 30A Rich Solar MPPT feeding (4) 100AH AGMs in the radio shack. When it's cold out in the winter,below 40 degrees, I've seen up to 244W at 38.96V and, with cable losses was basically 20A at 12V. The downfall of monocrystaline panels, especially in series, is that clouds and shade are your enemy. Tje polys do better in some situations, but the monos are WAY more efficient. We're talking 16% for the HF polys vs 22% for the Eclipse monos.
