No, he's playing a 12 sting on the top (set to accoustic setting) you were close, 6 string electric in the middle, bass on the bottom with a fretless bass half and half, and a 15 string harp on the back of the tail. The top 12 string also has a fretless board halfway down the neck. ........ oh and no, 50k won't cover it. It is priceless as it is the only one in existence. Steve Vai has always been an alien. Frank Zappa chose this guy at 19 to transcribe music that wasn't supposed to be transcribed and he did so .... AT 19. This dude was playing with world class musicians before he could buy a beer.
The Hydra has four individual outputs to a AX FX unit via Ethernet cable. Steve does play the Hydra guitar live. The top 12 string guitar only has frets on the top half. The bottom of it is fretless. On the bass neck the top two strings are fretless and the bottom two strings have frets. It took awhile to construct the guitar
There is only ONE in the world and that was it. This is not the first time Ibanez has done this. They built the very first 7-string electric called the Jem Universe which was first heard on Steve's 1990 album Passion and Warfare. They also built a triple neck heart guitar (12 string, 6 string, 6 string fretless) that debuted on David Lee Roth's (Van Halen former singer) 3rd album Skyscraper. That guitar was eventually auctioned off to 1 unknown buyer in a private sale between multiple bidders. The 7 string became a prototype guitar. It literally spawned the next generation of guitar players in bands of the mid 90's early 00's such as Meshuggah, Korn, Limp Bizcuit etc..
Technically Vai may be one of the greatest guitarists ever. That isn't to diminish his musicality. His hand skills are beyond belief. When you're Steve Vai and you have an idea for a revolutionary guitar you call one of the R&D guys at the guitar maker of your choice and they build it for you because you're Steve Vai.

One of the Best guitarists of all time!!!!!!
This proves why Steve Vai is leaps and bounds ahead of most guitar players, musically, compositionally, and on a technical level.
