    A brilliant tutorial! So much instruction, but totally relaxing. I love your work flow and your vintage sewing machine oozes charm and homeliness - it's persuaded me to reinstate my 1954 Elna to its rightful place in my sewing room - it's going to be busy! More tutorials, please!

    • @SaturdayNightStitch
      @SaturdayNightStitch  4 роки тому +2

      Yes! Bring out your Elna! I have a couple of Elnas on my "want" list for my VSM collection. They are fanstatic Swiss engineering to rival Singer. Its so worth taking the time to get to know the machine and used to it. They have more character in my opinion.

    Dress came out just fine, as usual!! What fabric is that? Didn't sound like poly-cotton. And the cute 'little miss' that came to get you, you may have to make her something too - a sandwich? Your demo is encouraging, really helpful to see how you do your sewing - boy you save time and have a garment ready to wear - can't beat that. I see that trusty Singer too.

    Do you slim the sleeves down? Mine are quite big and stick out! I've wondered about doing a dart or tuck to make a slight puff.

    • @SaturdayNightStitch
      @SaturdayNightStitch  Рік тому +1

      I didn't slime the sleeves down. I have broad shoulders with a a forward round that tends to fill out sleeves. A broad shoulders adjustment is quite common for me , however as this is a raglan style I didn't do that. Hope this helps.

    Beautiful. It looks like the pattern pieces are laid out on the fabric with room to spare. I'm making a size 8, and I'm not tall, 5'1". Do you think 2 US yds of fabric (1.82 M) would be enough? I could use different fabric for pockets?

    • @SaturdayNightStitch
      @SaturdayNightStitch  Рік тому +1

      Absolutely! As long as you're not pattern matching that's enough. Indie patterns tend towards yardages as they are an entry point for many beginners. Good luck and have fun!

    Absolutely LOVE this dress. Can I use elastic thread as opposed to shirring thread? I have it already, bought it not knowing what I would use it for...

  • @lindirose2
    @lindirose2 4 роки тому +1

    wow, don't know what went wrong. I'm 36-28 38. Choose correct size but had to take the back in 5 inches! added shirring too but made my top back look like a hump back whale. Ripped out seams and took the top in and overlayed the bottom back. Will need someone to measure my back to get the right fit. If you have a small back watch out. After all was done it was okay, but no winner for me.

    Y really made this tutorial fun, interesting and instructive. Lv your vintage machines isn't it a pleasure to have such an opportunity. Lv the fabric, keep in mind as to expense. When y sew and sew well as y do , garments really support the cost ,indeed family sewing is cost effective as to equipment cost. Y are far and above the hobby level ✌🏿️👌🏾😇🎓💝

    Great tutorial, thanks a lot. It will help me to make a nice dress. One question I do not have overlock, what would you suggest in this case? To use double stitch surjet to put the 2 pieces of fabric together with nice finish?

    • @SaturdayNightStitch
      @SaturdayNightStitch  2 роки тому +2

      If you have pinking shears they will be an easy seam finish. Another option is using bias binding tape on your seams to finish them. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

    • @barborabartova6615
      @barborabartova6615 2 роки тому

      @@SaturdayNightStitch I thought more about overlock stich that is available on my sewing machine, I have it in French so my terminology in English is not that good. Of course that's not the same as dedicated overlock machine. I do have pinkink shears, do you mean instead of going around the fabric with overlock stich just use the ✂ pinkink shears. Thank you for your answer and your time.

    Do you think jersey could be used for this dress?

    • @SaturdayNightStitch
      @SaturdayNightStitch  3 роки тому +1

      Yes you could but it would be a stable jersey like ponte di roma or french terry or thick sweater knit. If you use a lightweight cotton jersey then you might consider going down a size to account for negative ease. I'd avoid using any of the 4 way stretch jerseys or the slinky jerseys as they are unsuitable for this style.. Hope this helps.

    Great sew along and tutorial. I just purchased the pattern, I have been looking for a cute summer dress and I think this is it! I just found your channel and so happy to have found another channel during the time of social distancing. The old Singers like you have are just beautiful works of art too, such pride was taken in the manufacturing.

    This is an amazingly useful tutorial, thank you! I loved the tip to overlock as much as possible first and the way to finish and press each seam. This isn’t mentioned enough on pattern instructions and I have been struggling with it a bit. Do you overlock with or without your knife blade when preparing seams please? Also, with the shirring, did you just lift your needle and jump down each row, or backstitch and finish off please? I could only see 2 x tail threads? Thanks for such clear instructions! 👍❤️

  • @janfranklin2114

    I'm getting ready to make this and trying to choose my correct size. If I size down so it is not so roomy, will it ruin the effect of the shearing?

    • @SaturdayNightStitch
      @SaturdayNightStitch  4 роки тому +2

      It shouldnt do. Although it all depends on the fabric you use - this chambry fabric is not drapey - its got some structure to it so the shirring effect looks very obvious. I made another one in a viscose mix fabric which is less structured and though you can see the shearing which brings the waist in, it doesnt 'poof' out as much as this one....I hope that makes sense :-).
