    I recently had my nephew staying with me. 30 years younger than me. Sitting in the house one night, I put on an episode of "Are You Being Served?" His first reaction when it started was "What's this crap? I answered "its an old British comedy I watched when I was your age." He said "I don't wanna watch some stupid old show like this. Can't we watch something good?" Me: "It's my house, we're watching this." By the end of the episode he was laughing his ass off. Asked me "Are there more of these?"
    We spent the rest of his visit watching the whole series. Successfully converted him to a "Are You Being Served?" fan!

      I did much the same over 10 years ago with the daughters of my neighbors, who were from Russia. Their house burned down and I was babysitting while the parents sifted rubble. The girls loved "Star Wars" but I have the unedited original movies, so they didn't like them. I knew they were interested in ancient Egypt, so in desperation I asked: "Do you want to watch three guys looking for a mummy inside a pyramid?" It was a 3 Stooges flick. They sat stone-faced through it. When it was over, they looked at me and asked: "Do you have more of these guys?" After 3 hours of the 3 Stooges, even I was sick of them. 😄

      Used to do that with my kids & B&W movies & Old Time Radio & classic music sometimes. Give them a taste- sometimes it really opens doors & their eyes. My oldest son loved Charlie Chapln & the others would watch some too, but classic Hollywood comedy without all the current day trash & profanity & it's very clever writing back then is so much better. As we say, today's kids - they don't know what they're missing.

    • @GeorgiNM
      @GeorgiNM 4 роки тому +5

      It was filmed live, so my guess is (most) their bloopers are in the final product, but they were quite professional, so it's rather minor blooping. One thing that often happens is they briefly forget each others' characters' names. Also sometimes they laugh while giving a punchline.
      There might be more bloopers somewhere, but I think, seeing as the budget obviously wasn't too plentiful, that they only might've filmed when absolutely needed.

    This episode - HAPPY RETURNS - and four other episodes - DO YOU TAKE THIS MAN?, STRONG STUFF THIS INSURANCE, GERMAN WEEK, and TOP HAT AND TAILS - clearly showcase the funny yet brilliant work of choreographers Sheila O'Neill, Frances Pidgeon and Irving Davies; but added to this fact is that while Nicholas Smith (Rumbold) actually plays piano in several of the show's episodes, in TOP HAT AND TAILS Frank Thornton (Peacock) not only dances well with John Inman (Humphries), but actually sits at the piano himself and plays!

    Takes me back to when I lived in London in the late 'sixties. There were 6 of us sharing digs, one being an English girl, Janet Andrews, who worked in Dickens & Jones in their fabrics section. I recall her making her sister's wedding gown in white velvet - made a brilliant job of it. Unfortunately we lost touch when we all moved on to other areas & countries. 😟

    I always picture one or more of this show's writers asking, "Right, so, is there an opportunity to have our main characters dress up in silly costumes in this episode?" at their writing/brainstorming sessions, after they've had a few at a local pub, of course ;-).

      Well, there was only two writers, that being Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft. Maybe a few more in the beginning, but mainly them. And I can imagine most of these plots did come about after a few too many.
