    When I taught English to young children I associated the letters with a colour.
    a, h, j, k in grey sound /eɪ/
    b,c,d,e,g,p,t,v in green sound /iː/
    f,l,m,n,s,x,z in red sound /e/
    o, in yellow sound /əʊ/
    q, u, w in blue sound /uː/
    i,y in white sound /aɪ/
    only r doesn't rhyme with a colour so they colored it in black.
    To complete I also used a sort of rap called The Alphabet Rap.

    My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Thanks to the author of the channel for this interesting video! Good luck to everyone who studies a foreign language and wants to realize their full potential!

    In Singapore, British English is taught and used in official settings such as schools and workplaces, but somehow, there are Singaporeans locals who prefer to pronounce the alphabet Z as Zee. This is the consequence of getting influenced by American culture.

    There was a teacher I remembered SabirRehman, one day he gave a lecture in the class in English, and I am not able to understand, going above my head but I got interested into his British Accent, because
    He has done his education from UK. After then I started getting interest in English, leads me to start
    Looking English Movies makes me too interested In English foreign accent.
    I had been working on BritishAccent for last 10 years its the hard work of 10 years that I can speak in their accent.
    People used to ask me that am I a foreign native, but I always reply them that one should adopt the habit of hard work. After that you can change yourself. All of you are requested to practice this language, do not think of the people, otherwise you will not be able to achieve anything in life.

    As a non-Anglophone, I was raised in an education system where RP was taught. English Second Language Higher Grade became my pet subject, which I always passed with distinction. Later in life, I was diagnosed with aphasia after a dozen strokes, four of which were basal ganglia and at least one cerebellar. Even now, despite articulation problems, I have a clearer pronunciation than most UA-cam content creators. I hate it when I hear people speak of Idilly or Toronno, for instance. Their pronunciation is in deficit.

    Thank you so much for your hard work! I didn't know that 'z' was pronounced /zed/ in British English. I had been taught at schools in Japan that /zed/ was wrong and /zi;/ was right and I have been teaching like that as an English teacher. I will correct that misunderstandings at every encounter with /zed/ and /zi:/ from now on.

    • @ky3532
      @ky3532 2 роки тому

      And to be fair, it's more or less the other way around.
      It is only the US that brought the pronunciation /zi:/ instead of the original pronunciation /zed/, which may have stirred a trivial confusion in pronunciation just as the US has their own spellings and pronunciations for a lot of many other terms. Most countries like the UK, India, South Africa, Kenya, Australia, Canada and most others use the pronunciation /zed/, with a few exceptions that either use /zet/ or its equivalents but necessarily involving two consonant sounds.
      And from what I know in Japan, the romanization for the letter Z in dragon ball z is "zetto" which is similar to the original pronunciation.

    Thanks in advance

    • @xXJ4FARGAMERXx
      @xXJ4FARGAMERXx Рік тому +1

      Yes, it is correct to say it like a-r-and-ess instead of a-'-and-ess. In fact it's the natural choice to say a-r-and-ess, because English hates hiatus (that's when you have to stop between two vowels) and always prefer to have a consonant between them so the flow of conversation can keep going.

    I am American. When I lived in the UK (both Scotland and England) the Hey-ch (or however you spell it) thing for the letter 'H' was universally used. I never ran into anyone who pronounced it the way we do in the US (eh-ch). Also I've heard some strange 'J's in Britain as well. One in particular was like ja-eye. The only two ways I've ever heard R pronounced are arrr like a pirate, and the rolling R they use in Scotland that sounds pretty much like the Spanish R. In some areas of Scotland the letter 'T' is so softly pronounced in words it is barely detectable .... like butter becomes buah-er with the ever so slightest hint of a T in there. Overall though the way you pronounced your British alphabet is very very close to the American standard way of doing it. The only exceptions I noticed were the R and Z(ed).

    Thanks Emma, I'm going to use this in my class. I teach at an international school, so the students should know British as well as American English (what I speak). I have also noticed that a handful of my more advanced students don't have their letters down automatically. I would say that if you make the note on American pronunciation with the 'Z', it might be fair to note that the students saying 'ar' for 'R' are actually saying it correctly in American English.

    • @Pronunciationwithemma
      @Pronunciationwithemma  3 роки тому

      I didn't mention American English because WHY should I constantly make comparisons between the two? As a teacher, I strongly believe you should recognise and teach your students to see all varieties as their own individual varieties and that it isn't just a constant comparison between "British and American". What about Canada? (They say Zed too). Or Australia? Or New Zealand? Or South Africa? Or Ireland? And so forth. This constant comparison between British and American, like they are the only two varieties that exist and should be compared, really needs to end. Realise that this is one variety I am showing and let it stand alone instead of forcing constant comparisons between this and "American English". Thank you. :)

    The r was one of the first letters I noticed was very different in the Collins dictionary and the American Heritage dictionary, when I began to realize There Were thousands, ten thousand, even more variations, between the spelling of a word and its pronunciation. My Collins dictionary has a phonetic symbol like an hour glass, which indicates that, in Glasgow, for many words with an r, one correctly pronounces this letter as a long a. The American Heritage dictionary is more inclusive of this sound, which you described with the demonstrative 'that' in the phrase 'that r'. For example, the American Heritage dictionary says the word Professor is pronounced pri fes ir, with short vowels. In the Collins UA-cam 'Pronunciation of the English Word Professor', the last r is very soft.

    Thank you for a great learning resource ❤ Could you explain the meaning of lower dots in transcription? In IPA they are not taught as far as I know. Do they help divide syllables, words? Thank you.
