But at that point, you're thinking of the taste of the liquid, not the cup itself, that will hold it. Bowls and cups alike, only hold the contents of the delicacies, and are not the subject at hand itself.

The reason people don't pre-order is there's no reason to. The only benefits you will get is a cosmetic, because anything functional is essentially "pre-orderers are objectively better than everyone else, and are at a permanent advantage." That is called bad game design. Also you are just paying the same amount of money if not more for a less polished version of a game that you have no idea will be good or not. Pre-ordering games is dumb. This is one of the only Eclipse bad takes icl.

You have great points... but i still wont be preordering games anytime soon. Here is a few reasons i personally dont pre order:
    - Game companies nowadays, in particular bigger ones, tend to release games in very broken stages. With pre orders that is doubly true. Take for example Suicide Squad KTJL with its servers not working for a while on preorder.
    - Preordering to then go ahead and refund is a time investment and it sucks to waste your time in a product you thought would be great but wasnt. And the more this happens, the less you feel like pre ordering due to losing hope on a good pre ordered product.
    - The lack of opinions and general knowledge on the game puts it on a weird aura of unknowns when pre ordering. You are not sure how the game feels like to play, or if its grindy, nothing. You just trust the little pieces of content out there about the game and GAMBLE on it being good. Im very patient and feel safer letting others play and form their opinions on a game before i myself form my own so ill never preorder.

With how terrible the majority of recent releases have been, not pre-ordering games has mostly been a learned response, not just a randomly gained stigma.
I used to pre-order games there were actually good (Doom Eternal, GTFO, COD MW 2019), but the horrific launches of games like Fallout 76, COD MW3, and Cyberpunk 2077 completely destroyed that for me.
You use to be able to have confidence in studios which had produced insanely good games to keep producing quality content, but what we've seen recently has completely destroyed that.
With the recent trend of horrible pre-order releases, you are more likely to be pratically scammed out of your money then you are to earn amazing rewards for supporting the developer of a great game before release.

pre-orders suck. You as the consumer in the short term don't experience any negatives, however, the second you look at the long-term effects that result from preordering games you find out that you're being shilled. You're spending your money on a product that hasn't yet been finished. I don't want to spend my money to budget their unfinished project. I would way prefer companies to be left in the dark about how many people are willing to pay for the game on release, so they don't just release a shit game that gets a lot of engagement so that their business has a momentary influx on paper.
And that's completely disregarding the fact that the game's first couple of hours can be completely different from it when you're ten or more hours in.
Not only are you not funding broken jank games to be released like this, but you are also making sure that the project is of quality even when you have spent more hours on it; Steam only lets you refund the first couple of hours. Not everyone can afford to gamble their money away when buying large games.

      1. Watch the video
      2. You only screw over indie game developers with this mentality, you not preordering isn't going to affect a multibillion dollar company from making a bad game. This argument is being used against games like DD2 yet I see no logic behind it, I don't care about "pressuring" companies or trying to abandon a product because I know it has no effect. Of course Helldivers recently succeeded in this, but that's a global response and not some miniature movement that acts like they're the only people playing the game.
      3. There are no "long term effects", you aren't being shilled, you lost $20-70 depending on the game and there is nothing else to it. We aren't getting involved in a Steam pyramid scheme, and it's your fault if you decided to blindly preorder a game without doing research an especially without the chance of a refund. In fact you are only experiencing short term effects, because you just lost money.
      4. If you still haven't watched the video, time doesn't matter because companies like Steam will know if the game is trying to get you to not refund it. Also how does this matter? Both preordering and buying it after the fact are both equally affected by this, reading reviews before spending time on the game is the same for both.

Not sure if your argument is even valid after you downplayed the literal loss of money. You're choosing the loss of MONEY, an upwards of SEVENTY DOLLARS, over not pre-ordering, and to that I don't even know what to say.
Also, the whole argument revolving around refunds is very weak since refunds as a whole are only upheld consistently on Steam, and many people play games outside of that website. For example, it's nearly impossible to get a successful refund from a Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo console due to how out of touch those game companies are. You are basically restricted to refunds towards PC games 99% of the time. This is a very very bad risk to take since having next to no chance of having a game refunded isn't a good tradeoff for playing a game earlier than you would if you had waited even a mere few days.
As for the effects on the company by not pre-ordering, these are frankly irrelevant regardless of if you pre-order or not. No real reason to bring this up as it's basically like saying that the sky is blue in a conversation about climate change.

  • @Draconaii
    @Draconaii Місяць тому +21

Sony and Microsoft barely has a refund policy, the game has to be almost 100% unplayable like cyberpunk 2077 on release. Otherwise they very rarely give refunds, for example on Battlefront 2's release with the issues on launch I wasn't able to refund on Microsoft's store. Also I feel it's obvious to say this but shaming people for pre ordering is stupid and defeats any argument you would have since you're just making an enemy by shaming them.

    • @Alex_Fishman

If the game comes out bad, you can refund it, and we weren't talking about console exclusives at all, because bringing them up does not make sense, since no adequate person is going to pre-order a game they can not refund without knowing if it's gonna be good or bad. If they offered something that legitimately gave you a one up gameplay wise for pre ordering, i feel like that is just poor game design and likely reflects the game as a whole. Either way, you are getting the same experience if you just wait till it releases, then buy. Not saying that pre-ordering is a taboo thing that you should be bullied over. I just think it doesn't matter either way in the end, so why bother half the time? preordering is nothing but an archaic relic from when games used to be only physical and supply around launch was always limited so preordering was the way to ensure you could play new release day 1. now that we are in the digital world of gaming (This is irrelevant, but remember when Sony was adamant that games would be cheaper because they were digital?), preordering has completely lost all purpose yet the business execs still try to push it by adding early access (undoubtly forcing the devs to rush a playable state earlier or just delaying the real release of the game just to squeeze more money from their pay pigs) or by adding a couple of skins... preordering right now in its current state exists as nothing but an investment with no return. there is no difference from buying day one or preodering except for the FOMO tactics that the business execs constantly try to push. also your take on refunds is extremely close minded, sure steam is the shining exception in the modern gaming world usually providing quite generous refunds but the same cannot be said for anywhere else (playstation, xbox, nintendo) which all have very strict refund policies making the mindset of "Oh I'll just refund this if I don't like it" more to the real corporate reality of "You can only refund this if we will get in legal trouble for not refunding you."
to summarize, there is no true advantage for YOU, the consumer, to take a larger risk preordering a game rather than just buying day 1, if you are that keen on playing on release. (just to clarify I do not have a problem with buying games on release, but I am adamant that games should be COMPLETE on release).

You bring up a good point Eclipse with the online storefront and the opportunity to return and the ability to wait for a game to come out but I feel that's mostly what the "don't pre order" community is mostly about for people to wait and not jump the gun. I don't think the don't pre order meant you shouldn't buy a game until you've reviewed every resource or know all about it. And I think the main reason for the culture in the first place is s since while abunch of games look amazing on trailer 99% of Triple A SINGLE player games have fallen short and have lies and completely animated part of the gameplay trailer that are put out and for those single player games you don't exactly need to waste time returning and dealing with that when you could also just buy a game that's a bit older but better. As for the multiplayer games you brought up I don't really think anyone cares if they pre order those or not since most people expect it to just be basically like a big patch to the previous game

    1. spoilers. people LOVE spoiling stuff and i just kinda have to immediatly play the game to not get spoiled on stuff
    2. multiplayer, as you already said, if there's no players then that's kinda dumb. but also there have been so many examples of people always reminicsing about the old multiplayer experience, for example gta5. or in general, playing day 1 with everyone else who also likely doesn't have a clue what they are doing is SUPER fun

I honestly lean both ways on this Eclipse take. Shaming other ppl for pre-ordering is infact an asshole thing to do, however that doesnt mean that pre-ordering doesn't have it's risks and negatives. Of course, for much more "normal" webstores like Steam, you can even get youre game refunded even if you are late, however (even on Steam doesn't happen that often) on other gamestores and companies like Sony, refund is something they are like allergic to do.

  • @feelsweirdman542

If pre-ordering games is not something negative, it also objectively offers nothing positive. You are simply putting your money into a product that is not yet finished, practically playing a lottery with your own expectations based on what the game developers promised you (and it is much more common for you to end disappointed). So from a logical and objective point of view, you shouldn't give your money before receiving a finished product, it's the "healthiest" way a person can act with their own money, but of course it's YOUR money and you do it whatever you want with it. From a more moral point of view, it is very ridiculous to see multimillion-dollar publishers carrying out these practices that only abuse the feelings of fans of their brands and franchises that they are entitled to, it is simply humiliating to see a person trust so much in publishers that have failed several times in a way that nor do they seem to care about the consumer's (And I agree that micro-transactions are the biggest problem within this topic).
However, I only see that there is objectively a benefit when pre-ordering games from indie developers. On a scale compared to multi-million dollar companies, sometimes pre-ordering a game can really change the final delivery result and exceed even your expectations.
But in the end, I also don't think that the UA-camrs who say "Don't pre-order" are caring about how you take care of your money, but they may just be repeating the same catchphrase trying to somehow reflect an idea: Do NOT trust your money to publishers.
After all, the gaming community has already suffered enough trauma from them in the last decade.

The thing about the steam refunding is that, sometimes the support are just dickheads XD. My friend bought RDR2 on steam and it had never worked, he asked for a refund and he was over to hour limit, because it was "running", but in reality it was just the rockstar launcher as he was trying to troubleshoot and get the game to work. And didn't get the refund, then again this friend is prone to lying to me, and I have cut him out, so take it with a grain of salt. Also I am a none pre-ordering, but the only reason is for COD because they literally lied to me as a consumer, any other game really I will. I even pre-ordered payday 3, had fun by myself at night when it was a buggy mess, but now it just doesn't have too much re-playablity, and I'm waiting for that re-playability to replay the game.

To me it seems like just a risk to pay for something you dont quite know about instead of waiting for reviews, specially since, for example, No Man's Sky was impossible to refund for a while from how many people were requesting it. Could be just an exception and never repeat itself, but it really doesn't hurt to wait a couple weeks more for reviews

Imo, eclipse is underrating the aspect of sending a message by spreading this word and getting the numbers of preorders down. It is quite an important message, and plays quite a big role in hopefully changing how new games are. obv its not as impactful as starting a "anti micro transaction" trend, but eclipse is not seeing the value and importance of this as a first step of toning down the pre order culture that made many companies feel enabled to severely underdeliver

@@gloopyfeather you can’t “always” refund the game. I literally explained why this is untrue. 3 out of 3 of the biggest gaming console companies don’t issue refunds willy nilly, especially Nintendo who takes no refunds at ALL.
Also the point of labeling a game good or bad is the idea that the average person will deem the game good or bad, so using the niche scenario of a person enjoying a bad game or disliking a good game isn’t a valid argument to justify pre orders as a whole for the average person.
the last point is also mute. You wouldn’t know a game is trash without playing it however the likelihood, in your mind, of it being bad is increased through reviews or ratings. It’s better to watch a review than to not, it’s like arguing that there’s no point in flipping a coin 3 times to get heads if you aren’t guaranteed that side even if you flip it twice. All it does is increase the chance, which is always a good thing.

    • @gloopyfeather
      @gloopyfeather Місяць тому +1

@@jaswanthvardireddy2243 You haven't previously explained anything. So it is invalid entirely to say you literally explained why this is untrue.
Out of the 3 biggest gaming companies Nintendo is not one. The three that are the biggest are 1 Sony 2 Tencent 3 Microsoft. Sony provides refunds within 14 days as long as the content hasn't been downloaded/Is faulty on the PlayStation store. Tencent games are mostly on steam, a platform with a much less strict refund process, of within 14 days/2 hours of purchase. To note. That applies to 73 thousand games- Statista 2024/ 50-70% of all games on pc according to linkdin 2021. Microsoft (in relation to the Xbox store) has a policy similar to Steam, with the support page stating 14 days "in which you haven’t accumulated a significant amount of play time" However the Microsoft store does not issue refunds.
I never said it was a valid argument on its own. I had assumed you would watch the video in which you would not have the incentive to claim 3 of the biggest companies don't issue refunds. When only on one of them refuses and only half refuses to.
Points to you, the 4th biggest company, Nintendo, Does not issue refunds from their Nintendo eShop
And as for your last point I do agree with you, reviews sway judgment. However, if someone is excited enough to consider pre-ordering a game, do you think they would let someone sway their mind? No. 2 hours is long enough to judge for yourself. Pre-order bonuses are more tempting to experience then a 10-15 minute video. As I said before, The single biggest PC game distributor, Steam, offers refunds. The 2 biggest console platforms, offer refunds. Albeit Sony is a little dubious.
Now if you respond, now would be the time to say "I literally explained why this is untrue." Instead of your opening defence, in which you haven't explained anything at all prior. And your first comment is not an explanation.

    • @gloopyfeather

@@jaswanthvardireddy2243 Okay, My apologies for the long delay time in comparison to your response times. I have tried this 3 times, and forgot to send each time as I had typed for so long, and have other things going on. That or I cannot see my own comment
I'm tackling your points in order.
You have not explained anything prior to this, meaning you cannot say "I literally explained why this is untrue"
The top 2 gaming companies do not include Nintendo. However Nintendo does not provide refunds.
The Top 3 gaming companies will be dealt with in order from first to third:
Sony Interactive Entertainment: Sony games are either on Steam (I will tackle Steam as a whole in the next company) or their own Playstation Store. Playstation Store offers the arguably the most dubious one of the top three refunds. You must not have downloaded the game or have owned it for 14 days. I will let you have this one, as it seems to only be there for accidental purchases.
Tencent Interactive Entertainment: Most Tencent games are on Steam. The single largest PC game distribution company. With 73 thousand games according to Statista 2024 and 50-70% market share according to Linkdin 2021. Steam offers a refund policy (Spoken about in the video) of 2 hours of playtime limit and within 14 days of purchase. This is such an easy process many people have series of beating games and still getting refunds from steam.
Microsoft Gaming: This will be broken into Microsoft store and Xbox games
In Xbox a similar refund policy to steam is at play.
With the support page for Xbox saying "Requests are made within 14 days of the purchase date
Requests are for games in which you haven’t accumulated a significant amount of play time"
However for digital media Microsoft store does not offer any sort of refund.
Next you say my niche scenario is not a valid argument on its one, which it isn't. However, this is under a video, with perfectly valid reasons. Due to this it is reasonable to think you watched the video and took in information.
Lastly. If everyone sat around waiting for someone else to review a game, then the gaming scene would die. Nobody should cower in fear of losing money because you wanted to be first to play a game. Its illogical. Pre-Ordering a game provides a bonus 90% of the time, meaning if you are excited for a game, you can be more excited you have something others won't. If the game is bad, you can refund 50-70% of the time on PC almost guaranteed. On console its more of a gamble with Xbox and and a refusal with Playstation.
P.S Nintendo doesn't offer refunds. But they are not one the big 3 you mentioned and insinuated it to be with your word choice and sentence structure. If someone said my 3 kids are badly behaved, especially peter, you'd be in the right to assume peter was one of the kids. If you respond, which you most likely wont, now you can use "I literally explained why this is untrue"
Interested but also not to see your response
