'Oasis should do what's right for them': David Gilmour on a Pink Floyd reunion | ITV News

- There is nothing Rock 'n' roll about the building on the Sussex coast, but as I approach I can hear the unmistakable sounds of David Gilmour on guitar.
He has a particular sound that is his, and I am meeting him at a particular moment in his life.
After nine years, he has recorded a new album, and what’s more, he is preparing to take it on tour. Luck and Strange is the name, and it finds the former Pink Floyd guitarist in contemplative mood.

They did a reunion. It was class and couldn't be done without Rick now.
Yeah and bc of Roger’s narcissistic behavior over the setlist, they barely even made it to the actual gig despite only spending 3 days around each other practicing/rehearsing for a 20 minute set😂
@@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078Roger wanted to open with "In the Flesh? Pt.2" (an admittedly poor choice)... Dave was like "Nah... we're gonna open with "Breathe" into "Time (reprise") tonight."
By all accounts, that was the "argument" you are referencing.
@@thisisnotachannel Was this for the live 8 concert? Thanks.
@@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 Do you really want to hang-out with a bloke like Roger? No, hell, no!
Can't have a reunion when Rick passed away. Even Roger has said that.
Even if you could bring Pink Floyd together - an album with Roger and David - bringing other musicians together would be a treat... even if it was a one-off.
@taykitrleevitt4314 Roger hasn't made music that I find interesting in a long time. People want them to tour together but I can't see them writing side by side anymore. Those days are long gone.
@@ChristopherLeeShreds Agreed on both points.
@@taykitrleevitt4314Roger would rather make awful remakes of classic albums
@@ChristopherLeeShreds Roger hasn't made any music I listen to since "The Wall".
Reunion was in 2005, and it was beautifully done, and impactful. If you keep doing reunions, you run the risk of sliding into self parody like Kiss or Motley Crue with the endless reunion tours. It starts to become meaningless and cheap if you keep doing it. Pink Floyd put a bow on it, and it was a very special, unique, one off moment. Nick Mason throwing off his headphones and laying into a fill to herald the last solo in Comfortably Numb at Hyde Park in 2005 is how I want to remember Pink Floyd when I think of their final performance, not some half hearted thing without Rick Wright.
"short term thinking", nailed it
The Pink Floyd reunion question is so dull and lazy. Do you want to work with people you didn’t get on with from 40 years ago?!? Without Rick it would be such an anticlimax - people wanting to relive their youth while watching 80 year old men on stage. It’s done. Enjoy the back catalogue and the subsequent solo stuff. Move on!
Right. You’d think she’d realize he’s been asked that 1,000,000 times and that Roger and him don’t speak. We could have asked way btr questions
I seen David in Toronto 2016 absolutely brilliant but I would not want a Pink Floyd reunion I love Pink Floyd but I feel that with out Rick Wright it just would not be a true Pink Floyd concert, and tensions between Roger and David will never go away enjoy the catalogue watch the live gigs on your tele at home with a good sound system enjoy,
It's just an easy and stupid question. Well said indeed.
Indeed. I dare to say that I’d rather to see Mr Gilmour solo shows than a Pink Floyd reunion at this point.
Exactly Phil, you can see just how bored he is with it.
Usually when artists say "it's never gonna happen" when asked about a reunion, they are lying or they end up changing their minds. Not in this case. A Pink Floyd reunion is actually never going to happen (again). No love lost between Gilmour and Waters.
Can imagine how boring it is for a successful artist, with a wonderful solo career to still need to answer to these people who can't get over the past that he proved to all is behind him.
'There's only 3 people left and we're not talking...' I know DG has fallen out with Waters, but I always thought David and Nick were OK with each other. Or have I missed something?
Not missed a thing. Gilmour is still buddies with Nick. Nick is sort of inbetween Roger and David. He has no beef with either of them.
I think he meant they're not talking about it. David is on very good terms with Nick and vice versa.
Nick is much better friends with Roger than David.
Pink floyd had a reunion in 2005. The question of another one happening is just lazy journalism.
From the moment Rick left this dimension, David put PF to rest.
It would make no sense to keep going without Rick.
Roger is on his own planet, battling windmills left and right, as he wll be doing until he draws his last breath.
David seems to have made peace with his demons and is happy making new music.
These two men were a major cultural influence for me. I started playing music because of them. It hurts to see a chasm between them, but that's life.
There has always been a chasm between Roger & David - why did he join Pink Floyd in the first place, hmm maybe for money & fame? He forgot to mention that he carried on touring under the Pink Floyd banner with just 3 original members anyway!
@@graniterhythm53 Floyd were not exactly rich in 1968 so David joining for fame and fortune was hardly his motivation, he was brought into the band because of Syd’s erratic behaviour. As for carrying on Floyd why shouldn’t they, Roger left the band, that came back to bite as when he tried to stop them in court he lost and David and Nick were legally confirmed as the owners of the Pink Floyd name.
Well, Floyd were well known in '68 with record sales - Gilmour was not. He said in the interview that only 3 members were surviving so no reunion but he recorded & toured with only 3 original members - the guy is completely disingenuous!

Legend
Best in the business when it comes to making the guitar sing
Pink Floyd, one of my favorite band! Go go go!
i saw the division bell concert in 94- best concert of my life
there will never be another band in the future like Pink Floyd legendary
Hopefully, there might be better ones, as there were already better ones : King Crimson, Yes, UK, Magma...
A misleading bit of editing right there. Just as the narrator announced his wife is an author who wrote the new album's songs, they cut to his daughter singing a cover song by another band, which was not written by Gilmore's wife.
Im a starting guitarist and my goal is to bring rock backk and i love pink floyd really it helped me to struggling times so thank you david
Let’s make it happen together
Well, it's a huge agenda you have...
Record companies want to invest in talented musicians and today they are not investing . That’s says it all.
I tried to get tickets for the Royal Albert Hall shows. The prices were fixed but changed depending on where you were sitting (at about £300 starting price they were very expensive for me anyway). Which is to be expected. The problem has been the people buying up tickets and selling them on at up to five times the price. David launched two “warm up” gigs in Brighton for £35 a head which was brilliant. Sold out by the time I got on there….but sure enough the tickets are appearing on ViaGoGo, etc for £600+ already. You will never stop it. These ticket buying people are unfortunately just greedy and the artist is the one who can suffer by seeing empty seats in front of them on the night.
There's a Lennon, Yoko, McCartney type thing going on between Gilmour, his wife and Waters. So, no chance of any reunion.
Except that Poly wasn't around when PF broke up and after the Final Cut sessions, Dave already declared that Roger had so bad vibes he couldn't even play the guitar if he was less than 500km from himFrankly, with Roger's antics, well, Roger can hire mercenaries to play the Pink Floyd songbook and he has the 3nd best Pink Floyd Tribute band after "A Saucerful of Secrets" and "The Australian Pink Floyd Show" but, HELL, as well I could have jumped in Roger's role into PF in the mid 90's, as long as not asked to come with lyrics, no way I could work with someone like Roger : I know his kind and no, hell, no! By working, I mean interacting on composing etc...
Gosh, Roger even manages to make Netanyahu someone likeable! He's the Donald Trump of prog rock... As Guy Pratt said, "Even a spaniel with a head injury can play Comfortably Numb on the bass"
My number one band of all time and my favorite guitarist. In my opinion, he's the best. It's really sad that the band is never going to have a reunion. The clip of all 4 is going to be the last reunion.
I like Dave A LOT but you have countless guitarists deserving more attention if you're a fan of guitar
When hell freezes over, Floyd style 🤞

Trying to get tickets for Gilmour's concert was a similar nightmare
at least ticketmaster was not involved with pricing. Dynamic prices create a half empty venues (such as Pearl Jam London Tottenham - anyway cancelled due to the band health issue).
Yeah, well, thanks to TicketMaster, the first day tickets to MSG went on sale (the only place/way you could buy them), I paid over $800 for ONE TICKET. Yeah. "Dynamic Pricing." I didn't mind, knowing it was supposed to be his last concert date in the US, but imagine my surprise when they added another day by the end of the week? And then two more dates? So ... not a tremendously happy camper about that.
@@Moonmaedyn ticketmonster makes people idiots and the artists accepted this. Trying to get a ticket for PJ in Berlin and having tickets in a basket I was unable to complete a transaction. Later during the the day tickets were much more expensive. That`s why the European tour was not sold out, ticketmaster offered tickets for half price the less attractive seats (in London) if a huge volume remained in sell.
Try the LA shows. Tons of tickets. Hell, i've been trying to get rid of my extra ticket. I've noticed a lot $80 range tickets for sure rn.

I'm a big Floyd fan and have been since the early seventies, but I'm happy to go and see the superb tributes like Brit Floyd which doesn't involve having to sell a kidney to buy a ticket.
If you read Nick Mason's book (Inside Out) - he seems to state that the only reason he started Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets is because he was a bit miffed that these tribute bands were making money off of his brand (Pink Floyd) and he wasn't getting anything. He doesn't state it quite as directly as that, but that's the impression you get.
Nick, Waters and Gilmour are just bleeding their fanbase dry at every step of the way. Not bad behaviour for a bunch of multi-millionaires.
@@clarencebodicker9768 I can understand Mason's frustration, but the hugely successful tribute bands pay out huge amounts of royalties to the bands they represent (or whoever owns the songs), so it suggests Gilmour and Waters are doing fine from tributes, but it clearly shows that Mason didn't get much in the way of song writing credit when Floyd existed.
@clarencebodicker968 He also concentrates on the early discography instead of the latter works. Something Roger Waters and David Gilmour don't do all that much.
@@clarencebodicker9768 I think that is probably more a joke from him than the truth.

Daft question. Their last appearance ever was at Live8 in 2005. I understand they got officially wound up as a commercially entity, so there'll be no reunion....unless anyone's got a Tardis?.
A TARDIS. Yes, it's a very good idea.
Well, the biggest issue is that... If you get a Tardis, you'll end meeting with a 'tard named Roger any way
Even if Gilmour and Waters reunited it doesn't mean anything without Richard Wright. Floyd can't really reunite. But Oasis can so just enjoy it.

Sadly, the question of a Pink Floyd reunion will keep being asked of them until they have left this planet. Even if it was still a possibility for "one last appearance" together, it would still not be enough. David Gilmour has been totally clear that his Pink Floyd days are in the past. Just accept it.
Pink Floyd is over and has been over for a long long time, and that's OK. They gave us 30 years of constant great music, and we're lucky to be even living at the same time as these legends.
It's honestly so great to hear Gilmour still so mentally sharp. A lot of his peers of the same age that lived the "rockstar" lifestyle are now completely run down and incoherent (*cough* ozzy *cough*). It shows how important it is to take care of your health.
May you live long and continue to bless us with music, Mr. Gilmour. Your music has changed the lives of hundreds of millions.
The only reason we got the "Pink Floyd" albums that we did get after Roger left was that Dave realised his name wasn't selling... albums OR tickets.
So he called his third solo album a "Pink Floyd" project (it in fact is not) to bolster up sales... and it worked.
Don't misunderstand... I love AMLoR, The Division Bell, AND The Endless River. And two of them I do indeed consider "Pink Floyd" albums... Same way I consider the albums after Syd left Pink Floyd albums.
But my point is that Dave was done with PF back in 1983, and he has always resented the fact that he could not succeed without the name "Pink Floyd" attached to his work.
He finally got past that with "On An Island"... even though there was STILL a sticker on all releases that said "The Voice and Guitar of Pink Floyd"... so maybe not until "Rattle that Lock".
Anyway... he's in no hurry to go back to Pink Floyd. Hasn't been for a long time, and I, as a fan, am glad he finally has the solo career he always wanted.
Even though his solo work pales in comparison to the work they all did together
Roger ain't doing better with his solo records
Rick Wright was the Pink Floyd Sound. There can be no reunion without him, and he died in 2008. Stop wasting everyone's time.
❤❤❤
I think a reunion would be miserable with Water's input but I'd love to see Gilmour tour with Nick Mason and his Saucerful of Secrets. They're fantastic live and as close as you'll get to a Floyd reunion these days, with Gilmour on stage with them it would be absolutely epic.
I 100% agree... And I always favoured the pre-DSOTM era
Liking the saucers and Nick Mason and calling Rog miserable really doesn’t add up seeing as Nick would much rather tour with Rog than Gilmour.
@@Dontblamehim Why would he hire a bassist that can't play most of the stuff Gilmour played on the bass in the studio? Guy was for longer in PF than Rog and he's REALLY great... And even underexploited, gosh, look at the bass job he did for Madonna. Most of the bass parts were highly improved and live material ended with what PF lacked : the punch and the drive.
If Nick wanted to tour with any of them, he would have invited 'em and, IMHO, he's not even willing to fill stadiums and mega-halls.
The fact is he called Guy Pratt to join, not Rog
@@Dontblamehim You have a source for that? Even if it's true, there's nothing that says my opinion must be the same as Nick's. That's a bit of a bizarre thing to say tbh.
@@myrden965 yeah? A series of interviews of Nick Mason. And also one I’ve seen of David as well.
True fans of Pink Floyd and David Gilmour understand why there will never be a reunion, particularly since Richard Wright passed away, so to keep asking the same old questions about PF is just pointless and a waste of David Gilmour’s time frankly. There’s plenty of information and interviews online regarding the matter, most fans understand the way things are and has moved on.

I am incredibly lucky to have been at the final Pink Floyd reunion at Live 8 in Hyde Park back in 2005, when Roger Waters rejoined Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright (who has since passed away). They were phenomenal that night.
Any reunion now just won’t happen. They’re all pretty old, and Gilmour and Waters do not get on at all.
Pink Floyd doesn’t need a reunion. Once Rick was gone, it didn’t need to be asked. Everyone who says otherwise, “Dream on”…
I bet e is delighted to still be asked the banal questions all these years later, well done ITV, well done.

He is. And I’m sure he clarified that in the interview straight away, they just decided to cut it because it sounds more dramatic. Additionally I think Nick and roger are ok with each other, it’s just Rog and Dave who have the issues!

Promising?
Hoping for a pink floyd reunion at this point in time is very stupid. Only 3 members left and they are old guys who don't get along and talk badly about each other.
look. I love gilmour. His vocals and his playing. But the fact of the matter is his lyrics (whoever is writing them) just do not resonate the same as Roger Waters lyrics do. This is why they were such a magical team. Now having said that i would still go see either of them in concert in a heartbeat.
You hit the nail on the head. His wife is writing the lyrics. They may not be bad in themselves, but they don't reflect or match Pink Floyd's, nor Gilmour's music.
Lyrics are often nonsense (or appear to be and you won’t know what they are about if you don’t research it) and don’t matter unfortunately, including in some of those Pink Floyd classics. It’s the music that’s important and is lacking.
waters was the conceptual genius that really added weight to the songs and albums. the post-waters floyd stuff is pleasant but vapid. it's literally like hearing two different bands. three different bands if you consider that 'the final cut' was more like a waters solo effort with a few gilmour solos.
You can go and see Gilmour doing new stuff, even if you don't like the lyrics, or you can go see Waters playing The Wall, still, after all these years.
There's three of us and we are not talking! What's that supposed to mean? I know Nick and David are friends somewhat if not close friends and Nick is close to Roger. Have they all three gone to Coventry without the other?
He and Waters are equally (and yet differently) very important to Pink Floyd... both of them have had a role is the toxicity, and having Poly as the bands Yoko figure isn't helping.. I think we just need to enjoy the 1967-1979 Floyd music as it stands and see these two huge ego's as just solo acts.
I would be shocked if Roger would want to be anywhere near David after that juvenile rant Polly did on Twitter.
Actually, a rant due to a Roger's provocation... Dave, Rick and Nick gave him a chance in 2005, he immediately came back with his antics and it wasn't far the Live8 didn't even happened...
What happened between him and Nick Mason ?

Yeah, right. DG fleeces his fans for 1000s of pounds with dynamic pricing and everyone takes it on the chin (because they're a bunch of overpaid middle management wa:::.rs and can afford it) Meanwhile, Oasis do EXACTLY the same thing and there's a huge uproar.
DG is far, far, more guilty of ripping off his fans than Oasis at this point. His choice of the RAH is a prime example of this.

That ship sailed a long time ago
Anyone know why he and roger don’t speak?
They just can’t get along at all. They butted heads while together for a long time before Waters left the band. I think it was to do with Waters trying to take complete control of Pink Floyd at the time as years went on and Gilmour just wasn’t having it really. Legal battles etc have definitely shattered it further although in 2005 they did play together again and have since appeared on stage together for a song or 2 but they recently clashed again because Waters had been making some controversial political statements. They’ll never get along again, they’re too old to change views of eachother now

Blaming all faults on record companies greed for lack of new generation of talents is partly true. These rock legends have seldom cultivated talents on their own (The Beatles did, launching several talents), so why bother when all you care about is … your Money?

He’s right , record companies don’t invest in talentless musicians.
@@recabitejehonadab2654 Talent has nothing to do with it. When the record industry collapsed because people stopped buying albums, the labels no longer felt the risk was worth it. I think Sting has the same question in almost every interview about The Police. 😂
It wouldn’t be the same, but a reunion could be done without Rick. Some great session musician could play his parts. Rick and Syd are dead. Roger is insufferable at his best. Move on people. Just go watch David and his kid. She has the vocal chops that's for sure. It isn't just nepotism. I'm going to go see him on a tour somewhere wearing a shirt that says "Roger sucks balls".
It’s hard to imagine that in 1962 Decca told Epstein the future wasn’t guitar playing bands like the Beatles.
Considering Waters (whom I adore, by the way, so don't even try it) lip syncs... I wouldn't even want a reunion. Besides, one member is dead, so there could BE no reunion. Enjoy the records that they made and be happy with that, because that is all you're going to get now. The band is finished.
Old men bearing grudges is sad to see.
Yes, but it’s Roger Waters we’re talking about here.
Jesus he’s still being asked, that’s sad.
When will these kind of journalists learn Pink Floyd is over long time ago? Period!
Here's something that even long-term fans seem to be unaware of. From a legal point of view "Pink Floyd" is in fact only David Gilmour and Nick Mason and neither Roger Waters or Richard Wright have been members of the band for at least four decades. Wright never actualy rejoined Pink Floyd after he left in the early eighties (although he played on subsequent albums and tours he was never a legal member of the band) and Waters signed away his rights to the name just a couple of years later. Stricly and legally speaking a Pink Floyd "reunuion " would need only Gilmour and Mason. Yes, I can hear you all screaming blasphemy and rending your garments but go Google it. And don't give me that do goody good bullshit.
Even if Rick was alive and they were all talking, they're too old for a proper live show.
