- Lisa Gade reviews the 14” Dell Latitude 7490 business Ultrabook with a slim and attractive design that doesn’t compromise on ports, keyboard and trackpad. The laptop has a magnesium alloy casing, matte display, two DDR4 RAM slots, an M.2 SSD (SATA and NVMe available), backlit keyboard, Microsoft Precision trackpad, optional 4G LTE, USB-C (Thunderbolt 3 optional), Ethernet and plenty more ports.

That's probably the best Dell 7490 review I could find on UA-cam. Many thanks, Lisa!
I've been following your channel for a while and I am grateful to have found your channel. You've help me so much about laptop. Keep on doing what you do....God bless ! from India
Wow, this is an excellent deep dive! Looking forward to getting this laptop at work!
I used to watch this channel before I could afford any of these computers. Great Vids, Lisa! Like the old style of youtube rather than new bombarded with ads sponsorships and extra unnecessary.
I still have my 9 year old Dell latitude e6400 atg. Still works and does everything I need!
Thats awesome. 9 yr old computer still gets good reviews.
It's 2022... I'm looking to buy this as 5 yr old machine. Would you suggest that is a good purchase?
I was eagerly waiting for this review. Have ordered finally.
Thank you for this review has been a great help , keep making videos. :)
I got one from work. I love it over my 2017 spectre x360.
It's quiet, lasts 5 hours while streaming music from youtube. quite light and got that nice 1080p matte display.
If you are thinking of getting one for travel and a mobile office. It is a fantastic idea.
Buying one for my private use soon, but with a TB3 port.
Can it stream video without fan noise?
@@nils7310 well with no or very low fan noise
Very happy with this machine. I recently got the 16gb/i7vpro version. Working really well. Especially like the keyboard and the port selection! Also the matte display is very good :)
Would you recommend this for an engineer student ?
How does it work now 4 years later ?
I own both a 7470 (For Windows 7 compatibility) and a 5491 with the full 6 core cpu and optional Nvidia graphics. It's not a gaming laptop by any stretch of the imagination. But it's certainly a power users workhorse. I considered this model highly. Just the options of the 5491 had me impressed so much... But You will want to fill both slots of memory with this model. I ordered mine in the base 8 gb and bought an after market16gb kit. Money well spent. I gained nearly 9% performance jump over all without a battery life hit. Swell machines. 1080p on the run. Can't beat it.
Thanks for honoring my request. Once again you kill in that t-shirt
Been using my 7240 since early 2014, time to upgrade, thanks lisa.
First timer here. Great review while making good use of time. Thank you!
One of the best reviews I saw on UA-cam.
Dell produces well-engineered, reasonable priced, robust workhorses. I like them a lot.
a little bit too pricey tho.
That glowing cable tho
Their trackpoint sucks ass compared to Thinkpad's one though.
They have no heat vents to let hot air out..the 7000 line has serious heating issues for that reason
I like your concise no-fluff style of review. Pack a lot of info in there.. Like that you compare to other laptops.
Excellent review and Cool Tshirt, as usual!
Thanks Lisa! Appreciate you reviewing this! You didn't mention the heat situation on this. Is it warm to the touch under normal load - browsing, watching videos, or is it ok? :-)
Great review, thank you. I am trying to decide between this and the new Dell 5401. Any advice would be great.
Best to check the Dell Outlet in your country to pick up refurbished/as new Latitudes for much more reasonable pricing for consumers. (especially because here in Australia they have "go away" retail pricing for their Latitudes/Precisions)
Thx for the fantastic review. If I order a 7490 with a SATA drive will I be able to replace the drive with a NVMe drive in the future or am I stuck with SATA?
Thank you for your review ! I like business laptops
I have a decked out e7470 still enjoying it.
I bought this one two weeks ago for around 1700 USD, but Im in love. Masterclass computer.
7490, FHD, 16 gigas Ram, 512 SSD, and 8650U.
@@faizanulhassan99 I just bought a brand new one with I5 8350U with 16G of Ram and 256ssd for 380 euros from a guy :D
Hello Lisa. When possible, please review a top spec version of Lenovo's Legion Y530 and HP's Omen 15 gamer laptops. Thank you!
Hi Lisa, Love your reviews. unrelated question: What is the cordless mic that you use?
Dear Lisa,
With your experience with laptop, which would you prefer, the latitude line or ThinkPad line?
I really like these business oriented laptops. I wish Apple would release a model like this, but I'm certain that my wishes stay as wishes.
The display on this thing is kick-ass, 14-inch 1080 IPS is just about perfect. Sure you can get a UHD display but you're going to drain and wear out your battery faster and at an arm's length I can't even tell the difference. I'll take the 1080p display and 60Wah battery thank you very much. This laptop is essentially every bit as good as the XPS13 or 15 is a less fancy enclosure.
Are fans noisy when you switch to UHD ?
Do you code on this ?
@@kellywarrillow9751 A bit. And a bit of excel. If you're looking for the best display for lots of coding and excel go 4k. However for allround use and travel I prefer 1080p because of the battery life, it lasts a whole day more or less.
As one of the remaining four people still using a point stick, I'm glad Dell offers it as an option in their business laptops. However, I wish they still included dedicated volume buttons.
Pointer stick > trackpad
The famous ThinkPad "Trackpoint" is the only way I've ever moved a mouse around on a laptop. I roll my eyes at anyone using the touchpad on a ThinkPad :-D
Millions use it on the gpd and thinkpad.
@@strangerdanger2931 whats the gpd?
Viktor M it’s the game pocket digital made by the brand shenzhen
Great review!
Lisa, would you please review the latitude 7390 laptop (not the tablet convertable version but the one comparable to 7490).
your reviews are immaculate .
Good video. Thanks. toronto canada.
I recently bought a used Dell Latitude 7290 w i7-8650u. 12.5 inch screen. 16gb Ram . Similar to the 7490. $220 CAD ($165 USD). Like new, great computer still in 2024.
Thank you for fantastic review Lisa :) one question: if I buy a 7490 with an SSD M.2 SATA, in future I can upgrade it with a SSD M.2 pcie NVMe?
Yes
Got this laptop from my office. Superb keyboard. Just love it! Also simplicity of it's design is good to see.
I have the highest end model I guess. It's got i7, 16gb and 512gb ssd.
Really?!
IKR? @@AiwaLover Was shocked when I saw it myself
is it good for programming , design , 3D simulation or not . ???
madre mía, el mejor tutorial que he visto en mi vida, al punto, excelente
If I have to choose between the Dell Latitude 7490 and the Dell Latitude 5290 2-in-1, what do you think I will choose?
thanks for the nice video review 👍👍
I support most dell laptops in the Dell e74xx series and have to say that if you can get the 7480/7490 or the Thinkpad T480s (or the T470s), doesn't matter which to get. Get whichever is cheaper. However, although 8th gen is preferred. In my opinion, I work with/on Dells, mostly the 7470 and 7480 and 7490 and the docking stations I have to say I like the Lenovo T470s/T480s best. The Lenovos feel more premium.
my worry among those ones you mentioned is the LCD. Probably T4xs are worse compared to Dell74x.
Any update on a ThinkPad L380 review? curious on how display and battery life is :)
You also forgot to mention that it has 3 years of warranty which makes it a good choice for student (if you get a good deal) meaning that there is a higher probability that it won't die after 5 years of college!
I have a 7480, it's certainly sexy in a business laptop kind of way. I can't wait to upgrade to a quad core however. Even with an i7 it's still only a dual and thus almost pointless. But the build is one thing I admire. It's quite the thing.
Hi Lisa, how do you compare the mat display on 7490 versus the mat X1 carbon? which one is the winner in reducing glare, and in color gamut? Thanks
When choosing the display only 1 option has the Super low power display (SLP). I also prefer the TB3 options but have a hard time getting the configurations to work for me to be sure TB3 options like palmrest are lined up right.
We get the i5/256 version for $650. But we did buy 35,000 of them lol
Cracking laptop. I work in IT, and I actually prefer the 7480. It seems to interface more readily with the TB16 dock. The 7490 will, but seems to be fussy about the drivers in the dock being upto date. Both highly recommended anyway.
Very good review. Thank you!
Lisa, take a look at the RAM slot at 5:48. Is it just me or is the bracket holding it in place quite crooked? (Not the slot itself, but the bracket/cover plate.)
no its just a protection metal , when she un screwed the back panel due to no screw its moved little bit noting to worried about ,ram slot its solid ..
Your t-shrit !!! Is amazing !!!!
i want a Surface Pro -like device. whats the best option at the moment?
Been using this since last 6 months as my office laptop. I have been a ThinkPad user (L412, T450, E460) since last 6 years, and this doesn't stand anywhere near them. The track point isn't nearly as good as a ThinkPad nor are the keyboard and trackpad, it gets crazy hot that makes it nearly impossible to keep it on your lap while working. Even doing light programming and browing makes it go all volcanic, during the quarantine I have had many episodes of random shutdowns with this machine I checked for temperature and it didn't seem hot. It's better than HP Elitebook though (but not as pretty with shiny aluminium and that sharp logo) but nothing like my T450.
So you have used 2 of the 3 laptops i am considering to buy used in 2022. You are saying the Think Pad is a better top than this Dell?
Ever used HP elitebook? Ive got used one in 2018. It's at least 12 yrs old and now needs replacing.
Any thoughts on your experience will help. Tks
Thanks Lisa
I am buying a used laptop of this model at half price. battery life and performance is pretty good.. it's been used by a company for around 3 yrs.. is it worth buying?
Thank you for this THOROUGH review!
Looks great!
so my work just gave me this to work from home and every time I'm looking at the screen it just looks off and I couldn't figure out why but now I know thanks to you it's the stupid 720 screen on it. it's fine but if you are use to always looking at 1080 screens this is going to look weird if you can dock it I would recommend it.
I love your videos, keep it up
Thanks!
How’s the keyboard on this one? Im considering buying it but i saw reviews that the keyboard is not that good and hard to replace
Hello, can you review the Dell Latitude 5420 as well, I use one for work and it works fantastic. Would still love to hear your thoughts. Before this laptop, my attention basically revolved around macbooks and xps lineup, so I was surprised this model works very well, with complete set of ports including two thunderbolts 👍🏻👍🏻
I have a problem with mine, whenever im handling it, i have to be very gentle because if i hit the bottom right part of the laptop, below the keyboard, it shuts off and has to reboot.
"A latitude with attitude"😂 is that how dell goes around while advertising, cause I like it.
Now they'll have to license that phrase from me ;)
Do you recommend this Laptop for design engineering (cars) or XPS 15 9575? or any other? I want a laptop to do simulations
Can you please tell me which WLAN card I should get for using a SIM card in this laptop???
Awesome review as always! Question: If I went with a configuration with the core i5, do you think it would be good for some basic video editing (not 4k) or music production? I've been looking at these more business oriented laptops for a while now to upgrade from my current laptop. Thanks!
I love it's "friendliness"
That’s great. I love it.
I recently bought the Latitude 7480 last week for $580, I opted with 6600u 16gb 512gb 1080p matte variant.. sadly no 7490 8650u in our country. Been using it for web development, 2cores 4threads are still not enough for my needs, Slick laptop though.
new or second?
What are the viewing angles like on the matte finish screen?
Looking forward to a Thinkpad P1 review!
A comparison smackdown with T480 would be interesting
can I connect 4k display? It has 4k pass through?
Myself and a colleague have had issues using Dell Latitudes for pro audio in the past. We had skipping audio or dropouts when using ASIO drivers (low latency sound card drivers used for music production and DJing on Windows), and had to run DPC latency checkers to try and figure out what system drivers might be causing trouble. It's been many generations since our issues but I'm still wary of the brand. For my current machine I was lucky enough to find a review that listed DPC latency test results online. It has been perfect.
Hello Django, I also produce music, you think this Dell Latitude 7490 also has DPC latency issues?
@@Israel777888 I'm afraid I have no idea. Best bet would be to test it out. You might also want to search "(laptop model name) audio dropouts"/latency/trouble and see if you find any forum posts about it.
I purchased this same laptop 7490 from amazon but my laptop has thicker top bezzel, wny is this like this?
Who's better in the same config lenovo or dell ??
hello thanks for the video, i have a question, there's a version of the dell 7490 i7 with 16gb ram buy without fingerprint scanner, do you think it's worth, i mean the difference in price is just for the fingerprint or is there something else missing???
Please review the matebook d 2500u it is only 630 dollars with excellent build quality and is sold in the US through Walmart
Comments by Sidhesh Patil - I'd be interested to know your thoughts on the Dell Inspiron 15 5575 (Ryzen / Radeon). Thanks
Thank you.
And they are awesome! That 4.2 ghz version...
Why is this dell latitude 7490 without a fingerprint scanner? The ones I saw online has a fingerprint scanner at right corner
Can I charge it using the USB C or Thunderbolt port?
I am trying find out if the Dell Latitude E7470 i5-6200 2.3GHz, has a DVD CD burner?
And does it do video editing (what is video editing) Thanks
Is the keyboard and mousepad spill resistant?
Please do a smack down between hp omen 15 with 1070 and msi GS 65 with 1070 .
Chulada! thank you for your feedback
Great review.. Just bought one used from ebay..
elitebook 1050 g1 any plans to review it?
May I ask, is there a keyboard backlight?
Does the Latitude 7490 have a Lock-slot?
Hi Lisa, what are your thoughts on the budget laptops like the Lenovo Ideapad 330s? They have lots of variations in both 14 and 15 inch sizes in Intel and AMD configs
dont get AMD unless its ryzen, anything before isnt worth buying
We use this laptop in our company...your review is pinpoint
Any new(ish) 15" laptops with UHD blu ray drive?
Hi Lisa is it advisable to buy hp omen 15 Intel Core i7 (4th Gen) 4720HQ / 2.6 GHz Max Turbo Speed 3.6 GHz Quad Core Processor
16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
15.6" Full HD Touchscreen Display (1920 x 1080) Resolution
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4GB GDDR5 Dedicated Graphics.
some say its old and cant run most recent software.
I have the 6th gen of the this computer, the 7470 to be precise.
It wont win any beauty contests but sure this thing looks professional.
The mate material will show some signs of use, but you can wipe it out with a cloth, I think its some sort of auto healing materials or something. Deeper grooves will stay.
Seif Eddine B is it still fast? I am wanting to get one but worried it’s getting slow/dated?
This 7th generation latitude or Xps?
Can I use this machine for data engineering???
Gotta love the chunky business looking laptops. I appreciate these more than “consumer” or “home” laptops because they look and feel more serious
i have an 7490 i7 8650U idk if its touch screen or not help pls
This (bnew )one or x1 carbon gen 5 ( used)?
