    I think that the reason concavenator wasn't featured in Jurassic Park, was because it wasn't discovered until 2010. Because of it not yet being identified, Hammond and Lockwood chose not to feature it, or maybe because they thought it wasn't a real dinosaur.

      Like they thought they had gotten a "genetic mutation" and decided to euthanize it or something. Lol that would be cool.

      That could be a really cool concept for a movie. They find dinosaur dna in amber that is unknown, and it’s some deadly predator

  • @Tarbtano
    @Tarbtano 6 років тому +181

    Something to consider is Concavenator wasn't even formally classified until 2010. So if anyone cloned it before then or even more so, cloned it before 1993 when Carcharodontosaurids became far more well studied with the uncovering of Giganotosaurus and rediscovered of the until-then-lost Carcharodontosaurus, there's good cause to assume Lockwood and Hammond hadn't the slightest idea what they were looking at. A weird shaped, vaguely Carnosaur-like predator with a weird double humped sail on its back? Might have been written off as a mutation and pushed to the by-line without anyone realizing it was a legit genus.

    I'm not gonna lie, and I know it might not be possible, but I would love for a Jurassic Park prequel of Hammond and Lockwood coming together and making the first dinosaurs. Maybe that would be the perfect time to show the Concavenator and the Dimetrodon?

    I think, the Concavenator wasn't on InGens list and was not featured in the original Jurassic Park, because 1993 nobody known this animal. The Concavenator was discovered and discribed 2010 for the first time. Hammond and Lockwood didnt know anything about the creature, they created. So it could be, that this medium sized Theropod caused a bit of trouble and got killed by Hammonds hunter assistent Muldoon. Lockwood stuffed it then for his own collection.

    • @DeinonychusA
      @DeinonychusA 6 років тому +22

      My thought as well. Which just brings up the question...if that is the case, how many other unknown dinosaurs were revived and what happened to them? Raises interesting questions. Even in a movie universe, there is NO WAY that InGen only cloned known dinosaurs by recovering random DNA.

    • @Dinoman972
      @Dinoman972 6 років тому +6

      I was about to comment that as well. But how could they find Concavenator DNA without realizing it's a new species of dinosaur? If they did, they would have made it public, wouldn't they?
      Furthermore, what were they looking for before stumbling upon it? Concavenator inhabited what is now Spain, and I remember no other dinos in the InGen list that were found there (the closest one is Allosaurus, with fossils being found in Portugal, but not in Spain as far as I know). The only explanation I can find is that, in the film's canon, there would be Concavenator DNA in other parts of the world, where they were found together with the desired species' DNA.
      EDIT: Okay, nevermind, just found out Baryonyx/Suchomimus remains were found in Spain, both of which are in InGen's list, so they could have accidentally stumbled upon Concavenator DNA while looking for those.

    • @melvinshine9841
      @melvinshine9841 6 років тому +9

      That's interesting theory, actually. If that was a real animal and not a statue, that means they discovered a dinosaur unknown to science at the time, didn't tell anyone for likely secrecy reasons, and cloned a creature when they had no real idea what it was. That's risky in so many ways. Might be why it wasn't in the park if they actually did make one. How can you properly display an animal when you don't know what it is?

    • @mrizqyabd1071

    • @Dinoman972
      @Dinoman972 6 років тому +6

      @@mrizqyabd1071 True, and I'm pretty sure there are other dinos this applies to as well. However, while I think there were no other dinos from the list found in the exact same formation Sinoceratops was found in, there were Chinese dinos in the list: Mamenchisaurus and, arguably, Velociraptor and Tyrannosaurus. Plus, I think Sinoceratops could have been cloned by Masrani, similarly to other dinos such as Corythosaurus and Spinosaurus, while the stuffed animals in Lockwood Manor point towards Concavenator having been cloned at the time of John Hammond and Benjamin.

    Personally, I like the idea of these dinosaurs like the Concavenator and Mononykus being "scrapped" since these dinosaurs weren't known to since before 1993, and were likely thought to be mutations of other species. As for the Dimetrodon, I think it was sfrapped due to the animal being a permian creature. All of the animals in the film canon have been from the Mesozoic, so a Permian animal would just be out of place. As for the others, they were just earlier versions of animals we would either see later, or would be replaced by a more famous relative.

  • @MadisonHarlow
    @MadisonHarlow 6 років тому +6

    I always thought they were taxidermy. It never even crossed my mind that they were statues. The reason is I was a very frequent visitor of the Museum of Natural History as a child (I first got my love for dinosaurs there during my first visit in 1988 as a small child several years before the first movie came out). The dinosaur bones were my favorite part of the museum, but a close second was the taxidermy setups of other extinct animals. I remember during a later visit in 1995 on a class trip I took several photos of the Moa. The bird just fascinated me. So when I saw what Lockwood had I instantly thought of the Museum of Natural History. It’s really that similar to how their taxidermy areas looked at least back then so it’s pretty cool that the magazine sees the similarities too. I think the types of dinosaurs in the museum that we never saw alive with our own eyes were ones that Hammond and Lockwood cloned early on. Since they were kinda test runs they may have died of illness quickly. The scientists may have not gotten it all just right yet. Maybe some of the breeds they were unable to clone ones that didn’t have health issues so they had to move on to other breeds. Maybe some of the breeds were extra hard or extra costly to care for so they thought it wasn’t worth it to continue to clone them for the park. Even though it is likely expensive to care for the T Rex, they knew it would be a popular animal so the return on investment made sense. It may have not made sense from a business stand point to keep breeding some of the others. I guess lots of things could have happened. Now that Mills and Lockwood are both gone, I’m guessing Dr. Wu doesn’t technically have a boss?! And I know the reason he didn’t want the indoraptor sold was because he was afraid others could replicate his work. It will be interesting to see what he does in the next film. He could become kind of a black market dinosaur creator / seller and maybe there are clients who will demand one of these particular dinosaurs so I guess there is always still a chance we could see one alive.

    So Dimetrodon is semi-canon, that's all I needed to hear
    Edit: I wonder if the feathers on the Mononykus are perhaps a nod to the outdated idea that they are actually early flightless birds instead of non-avian dinosaurs. While this is very unlikely in our reality, it could be real in the JP universe (similar to how Deinonychus is a species of Velociraptor in that universe). If so, that would mean that Mononykus is the most bird-like extinct animal Ingen has cloned, which may have allowed its genome to partially "circumvent" the null-allele that inhibits feather-growth in all the other dinosaurs.

One of the great things about the original Jurassic Park film was the incredible amount of original paleoart they commissioned for preliminary concepts, props and movie backgrounds (Crash McCreery's sketches, Doug Henderson's mural). Since the reboot, there has been a lot of cut & pasting pre-existing artworks, in some cases without the artist's permission (eg. the uproar over plagiarised images used for the JW holoscape). The spinosaurus was actually planned for Fallen Kingdom, but later replaced by the carnotaurus, although, me personally I think its best that it wasn't because it was going to be killed a some flaming rocks from the volcano.

    Well, just like before, each had different characteristic on them, meaning that we could say they existed, but other observations can lead from one mystery to another, just like at the end o this video, there may be something much deeper that we yet have to discover. These videos are very analyzed from beginning to end, and each time you bring one topic, it leads to one clue. Arigato.

    Unless there is new info as I'm quite late to this video, totally missed it, it's curious that Mattel has released a Concavinator with one of the new ranges for JW. It came into work on delivery and really threw me as to why it had been added but wasn't in the series.

  • @F.Taborsky

    I personally think it might be true. An only creature of those from the dioramas we actually saw in films as a living animal with almost no difference in appearence is a Velociraptor. And the Velociraptor was the first succesfully cloned animal ready to be displayed in Jurassic Park. The others possess many features that may lead us to consider them as prototype assets. A Dilophosaurus is the second well known creature, but it looked a bit different in it's final version. Especially its frill resembles a frilled dragon more then ever. Now focus on the Dimetrodon - it posses many details identical to crocodiles. Its teeth and overall shape of the jaws. Osteoderms on its back and much more sturdier body than the real life counterpart possessed. Mononykus resembles a long necked skinny chicken with tail. That may have some connection to the null allele problem that disabled InGen clones to be covered by any type of feathers. Those sparse quills may be everything that left. Other 3 species do not possess so bright hints, but even so we can find an explanation why they were not listed in the InGen list. Diplodocus siblings could die in their very young youth. Even in the wild nature the most of animals die in first days, weeks or months. When we consider the fact that these were unnaturally bred genetical experiments, the chance of dying soon is even higher. A Dracorex is carrying an egg in its beak and it looks like it is trying to escape with that egg from group of other dinos like a thief - quite strange behavior for a herbivorous pachycephalosaurid, isn't it? That may be a reference to its strange, agressive behavior when bred, again caused by errors i its genome. And as Dylan Horvath wrote - no one knew a Concavenator in seventies and early eighties when John and Benjamin started their experiments, so they might consider that specimen as the another error caused by wrong gene splicing... Those are just my personal opinions. Since I saw this video I had never thought that these creatures were anything more than just statues. But when you think a little bit about this other option of their purpous, it doesn't look so unlikely...
