- This hurt. Really really badly. Walking With 3D is one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time, but how about the science? How accurate is this dumpster fire? #dinosaurs #paleontology

Imagine just how much better this film would have been without the dubbing, especially for the kiddos
Just like prehistoric planet, they could had made an awesome documentary with accurate models and off course, without that narration.
Exactly! I think it would serve better as a nature doc especially with all of accuracies that are ahead of its time!
@MyNameIsGabe yeah, that was on me, he said it right after I posted the comment. Regardless, most people probably saw the dubbed version first, tainting their view of it before they could have it redeemed by the better version
@MyNameIsGabe where can it be found???
@@fecesmuncher2448 The full Cumberatch Cut is on youtube!
The most tragic part about this movie is that it could have easily been good. The elements were there with beautiful environments, an engaging story, threatening villains, and it was a part of one of the greatest and most beloved documentaries series of all time. Sadly, it was bogged down with dumb and annoying dialogue, childish humor, the story having issues, dumb edits, other forms of studio interference, and it shat on the legacy of one of the greatest documentary series of all time.
I can't dislike a film for the line "I think I stepped in some fear".
Middle finger to the executives at 20th Century Fox for the matter. Feels like they never know shite about anything sensible about knowing dinosaurs for science.
@@nickmitsialis " I think I stepped in some fear " always annoys me to death, the voice acting in that ONE line was TERRIBLE.
@@zadas1132 it made my (then) pre teen laugh, so I continue to use it
It originally was but they just put it in anyway. It’s so much better without voices
This movie had such amazing potential. It could have been an actual documentary, a visually beautiful one at that, but instead the voicing turned it into nothing more than a kids movie.
It shouldn't had been a kids movie with those cringy narrations, it a shame that this movie nailed the cgi, visual beauty and all and could had been a worldwide documentary hit
watch prehistoric planet they let cumberbatch narrate. god damn
the executives think that dinosaur-lover kids are neurodivergent- autistic or ADHD, which is very disrespectful
Thank God there's the Cretaceous Cut version without it
it's billion's of times better
@@clobertina8176 but they still didnt remove the parts for the original version like theres still the dinosaur names but without the voice so it just looks weird
i can't believe you forgot to mention the part where Benedict cumberbatch straight up roasts that stupid moment with the arms by saying " the only comical aspect in Nanuqsaurus is it's tiny two fingered arms, but that's where the joke ends".
I need to watch this version now!
ikr
Why do people think dinosaurs are for kids? They're animals. Looking at you the people at 21st century who stepped in.
“Troodon shouldn’t be valid! It only has a tooth!”
Me waiting for Ostafrikosaurus to get the same treatment:
Well, you see, Ostarfrikosaurus is thought to be related to the spinosaurs, as a basal member, while troodon was thought to be its own thing when in reality, it was the young of a dinosaur related to charcaradontasaurus.
@@richardcollins5189 ???
@@SMeekerorum Troodon and Ostafrikasaurus are both only known from a single tooth.
@@richardcollins5189 wdym young carcharodontosaur
@@SMeekerorum oh, I'm just confused, that's all. remembered a different Troodontid, not Troodon itself.
Patchi's design is also the reason for why the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Pachyrhin -- I mean... Sinoceratops has the holes in its frill.
Also, Zaboomafoo!!! Loved that show :)
Let me guess. It was originally a pachyrhinosaurus. Then everyone thought it was a sinoceratops. So they changed it into a sinoceratops.
@@kade-qt1zu Yup!
@@kade-qt1zu Honestly I think it was changed last second because Universal realized Sinoceratops lived in China
@@Petah69420 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Imagine if this was the actual reason why they did it!
@@patricklee5239 At least it isn't as bad as the Jurassic Fight Club "Pachyrhinosaurus". Why would Pachyrhinosaurus even be on Isla Nublar anyway? Pachyrhinosaurus is associated with cold climates, so it seems weird to put it in a tropical island.
Got to see the Cumberbatch version of this film in IMAX. It was such a great experience and I’m so glad it wasn’t the kiddy cut.
this movie made me hate Pachyrhinosauruses so much that I had to rewatch the opening of Disney's Dinosaur where the Carno kills a Pachyrhinosaurus just for catharsis
Oh yeah i remember that
This movie made me like, and introduced me to, Pachyrhinosaurus
Tbh it’s pretty cool
Hey, it’s not their fault they got dubbed over just because some studio executives decided that dinosaurs only appealed to babies.
LOL
IT IS MY FAVORITE CERATOPSIAN >:(
When I was like five years old, my parents rented this movie for me to watch while they watched their adult horror movie. Even as a small child, I recognized that it was cringy and watched theirs instead. I applaud my miniature self for recognizing trash even back then.
First of all, there is no such thing As a bad movie It just depends who’s watching it Because when my grandma bought me that movie When I was like five I loved it and I still do Walking with dinosaurs 3-D the movie I rate it a 10/10
@daniakhan04 what did you like about it?
I'd have deducted a few points because of Gorgo/Nanuqsaurus being portrayed as a relentless murder machine that constantly throws itself against and atop the Pachyrhinosaurus even after it's been battered and stomped on and otherwise mauled repeatedly. Otherwise it is a very good movie without the voice-acting.
The animation is awesome and the animals look really cool, and I like the credits song
I just summed up everything good about this movie
I kinda feel the "Troodon" (Troodontid?) In WWD3D looks really weird. Its feathers are absurdly puffed out like it was electrocuted and it has a really dumb-looking scaly face. PP's "Troodontid" just feels more elegant and intimidating, this one looks more like a "joke" character, like Ed the Hyena or something.
In his review of this movie, RickRaptor105 even pointed out that the Troodon's eyes look like they'd pop out if you squeezed it. XD
@@cintronproductions9430 I was just about to point that out
There's a common problem I see even in good documentaries where people somehow shrinkwrap feathers themselves. They make the feathers scraggly and thin and appear to have no actual function. They always contour with the shape of the animal's body, even though fully feathered dinosaurs were the same as birds in that the feathers were so thick and so puffy that they actually altered the perceived shape of the animal. What is common with this trope, as well, is to make every featherless part of the body scaly even though many dinosaurs would also have fleshy parts. In particular, maniraptors are usually depicted as having scales ONLY on the feet, as that is what we see in birds which are a type of maniraptor.
To this day PP is the only documentary I've seen to completely avoid shrinkwrapped feathers.
This isn't to saw ALL dinosaurs had fluffy coats like this. I am sure some of them had thin and scraggly coats. But those would be dinosaurs with scattered feathers, not ones with full coats like in troodontids. At least, so far that seems to be the case. Maybe someday we'll find an exception.
But today, even with more sparsely feathered birds, the coats have multiple thick layers that change the contour of the animal greatly and are only thin and useless looking in certain areas. And in the past, it seems to have been the same. I'll accept this weird shrinkwrapped feather look with something huge like deinonychus, but not a small animal that has no reason to have such pathetic feathers.
Just chiming in to recommend Flying monsters 3D to you, it's a documentary narrated by David Attenborough solely about pterosaurs. Also thanks for another awesome video 👍
I loved this movie when I was younger, but I hated the voices.
Gorgon is still the best part of the whole movie.
Movie: we want to make the dinosaurs as accurate as possible
Also movie: let's make it so they can talk
I know you’re committed to this series but one must know when to stand off
but thanks for taking one for the team
19:50 There are pterosaur footprints from the nearby cantwell formation ( which in a 2022 study was shown to correlate with the prince creek formation )
8:13 there's actually a decent documentary narrated by David Attenborough called "Flying Monsters" that extensively talks about pterosaur evolution
It makes me so mad they could've made a great doc before they were forced to convert it into a soulless kids comedy movie complete with fart and poop jokes.
Wow, I did not see this coming at all and honestly, this has got to be the best things Red Raptor Writes videos I’ve ever seen ever since The Prehistoric Planet video and it’s way better than the Jurassic World videos in my opinion.
Great work Red Raptor and keep it up and I would keep watching Walking with Dinosaurs Prehistoric Planet over and over again until the day I go extinct.
This movie was literally T H E biggest cocktease for the paleo community, when I recorded this movie for amvs, I literally had to mute it. Eventually I just found a german dub LOL. I'm so glad we got Prehistoric Planet.
RRW: Gives this movie an A
Everyone: Its treason then.
Man, I'm so angry. This movie could have, and should have been borderline perfect.
It's a shame this documentary-like movie isn't on Disney+, Amazon prime video, or Netflix to watch again.
Y'know Red, if you wanna review a doc centered around pterosaurs, I actually know a few. There's Flying Sky Monsters (ua-cam.com/video/NzSftxS7kDw/v-deo.html), Sky Monsters (ua-cam.com/video/ML7Y6Huh44A/v-deo.html) and Flying Monsters 3D with David Attenborough. The names aren't very creative, but they are exclusively about Pterosaurs.
1:22 there is actually a third cut of the film on blu-ray called the cretaceous cut witch removed the narration and voice-over entirely
So, Barry Cook’s original intent?
@@maxrichards3881 kinda it's still has the stupid kids movie moments like the rewind scene and the mocking of tyranosaurid arms just without the dialog

I haven’t actually seen the film yet.
I personally think tyranisaurids did have feathering, though depending on the species. Tyranisaurids like Gorgosaurus here i think probably had a decent coating of feathers, though not a groundbreaking amount
20:30 Love the Zoboomafo reference. As I’ve said before, this film is fine, but the cut narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch is even better than the original cut.
I just found your channel yesterday and already got exited when seeing another accuracy video pop up, keep at it and I’ll be sure to recommend you to all my paleo nerd friends
Thanks for using the Stupidoceratops joke. I coined that term.
Nice review too btw
The Prehistoric Planet version narrated by by Benedict Cumberbatch is easily the best way to watch this movie. It actually holds up as a true documentary and easily deserves an A tier both as entertainment and accuracy. It's exactly what we should've gotten from the beginning.
I find it an amusing coincidence that “Prehistoric Planet” is agreed to be a proper spiritual successor to “Walking With Dinosaurs”, while the WWD movie was panned as a disgraceful in-name-only adaptation… until it was reworked into a new film called “Walking With Dinosaurs: Prehistoric Planet 3D”.
sadly, the voiced version of this was my first exposure to the walking with series
Grass had only started evolving during the Cretaceous and would not be widespread until the Miocene. China is where some of the earliest grass fossils were found.
God i was so excited for this movie... Cuz the cgi looked amazing!... But then I watched it, and when they started to talk... I immediately knew i wasn't gonna like this one, at least the gorgosaurus looked cool
I love learning about all these docos and how theyve help up over time. i find it rather ironic since the fossils sometimes dont hold up over time.
Was there any chance you would review the amazing dinosaur documentary called dinosaur train?
Love the videos
The problem with the movie is that it tried to be too many things at once. A weird mix of Documentary, Disney's Dinosaur, Spirit, and even Bambi. And being tied to a respected franchise only makes it worse, because naturally you will expect the movie to have the same style as the Walking With series.
Wow, didn't see that rating coming, but I had a feeling scientific accuracy wise it would do better than as a film. I agree with you, movie executives should keep their nose out of stuff such as this, the film could've been way better. Forgot to mention this, apologies. Thanks for the review Red Raptor, looking forward to what you cover next. Could you do Prehistoric America at some point? Otherwise, keep up your informative content, stay safe and have a great day.
Thanks for shedding light in the better side to this movie, though knowing the same guy who did Dinosaurs worked on this now I wanna see you do Disney's Dinosaur cause I always wondered aside from out of time and place dinos what things were accurate.
I know Carnotaurus was not a giant demon bull monster but it looks so cool tho.
Can someone elaborate on the cretaceous grass? Im now confused as to the existance of grass in the timeline and as to when
From what I understand, grass evolved in the cretaceous in China, but did not become so widespread until the cenozoic. It seems to be an ongoing debate.
Just got back from and Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and there’s a new RRW Dino doc review!? I don’t think this day could get better…
Could you imagine if they made a Walking With Beasts Movie and a Walking With Monsters Movie?
I hope that, if they do, they don’t repeat the same mistakes of this movie.
I really liked the no voice cut, that way I can enjoy the amazing models and animation without the horrible voice acting
Very nice review (and yeah, I definitely didn’t expect an A-). One tiny detail about the Edmontosaurus: they didn’t have a keratinous hoof-like sheath on the front limb. According to several very knowledgeable people I’ve talked to, there was a large “fingernail” on the front, but it didn’t cover the front of the hand (or even extend to the ground). It’s hard to tell, but I think the model in the film has one or more claws/nails touching the ground, so it’s still not quite accurate.
On the 3D Bluray of the movie specifically (I think) there's a cut of the movie hidden away in the Special Features menu called the Cretaceous Cut, which has no voice acting or narration.
Believe it or not I actually kinda like this movie, or, I think I do, it’s been awhile since I watched it but last time I did I enjoyed, probably because I like looking at dinosaurs, I’m pretty sure that’s the main reason I like it, and I love the song they played in the credits, live like a warrior is a good song, but makes no sense on why they played it in the movie at all though, it has nothing to do with dinosaurs
0:50 where can you find that? I’ve been looking for it for years
Ive been looking foward to this one
Keep up the good work
First. A childhood memory comes back to me. I saw this movie in the theaters 5-7 times. I didn’t care about accuracy, but I crossed my fingers and hoped for a great grade.
P.s you forgot to mention the hands of the gorgo/nanuq were switching between pronation and inward facing wrists.
What really blows my mind is that the doc version of this movie is called “Walking with Dinosaurs: Prehistoric Planet” yrs before prehistoric planet was even released and would often be compared to walking with dinosaurs, even called “this generation’s WWD”😮 That’s one crazy coincidence!
Nice to see I am not the only one who noticed that, especially when both “Walking With Dinosaurs: Prehistoric Planet 3D” and Episode 4 of “Prehistoric Planet” involve many of the same animals from Late Cretaceous Alaska.
@@markcobuzzi826 omg I didn’t notice that about ep.4, but your right! thats crazy! Maybe it’s not a coincidence??
Heck there was a cut of the original WWD also named Prehistoric Planet, narrated by Ben Stiller.
idk if u plan on doing this but would u (not asking u to do it) review games accuracy like for example The Isle, BoB, and Path Of Titans?
Does anyone know where I can find the version with the narration? I have a 'delux' set that has a version of the movie with just music and sound effects. Which is quite nice, actually. But I'd like to have the narrated one
Next time could be ''When dinosaurs ruled'' from 2000 by discovery channel.
idc about dubbing, it is my childhood i actually loved the dubbing 😭😭
I remember seeing this in theatres and kinda liking it (mind you I was 8 years old). I didn't know there was an alternative cut so will definetley try to track it down.
I think you should do an accuracy review of Prehistoric. It was a Discovery channel miniseries about the dinosaurs and other creatures that lived in places where today's largest US cities stand (New York, Chicago, Washington, Denver, Dallas and LA were the ones covered). It was abig part of my childhood, I still have the first 4 episodes on DVD (lost the last 2). I really wish it got more attention and you seem to include more obsucre dino docs as well.
I think the worst thing about this movie is that, not only is it a terrible movie, but they actually brought WWD into it! And made a product that's the polar *opposite* of what made the Trilogy of Life great!
8:13 Ever watched that David Attenborough documentary, “Flying Monsters”? It focuses on Pterosaurs.
Got the Blu-Ray 3D of that one. Great program
I hate this movie with a passion, it had all the makings, all the element it needed to be great… and it diarrhoea shat in our mouths… I wanted to scalp myself while watching this film
Also, the structure of this film, makes me slightly doubt that this film was ever made without the intention for voice acting. It’s structured far more like a film, with film like scenes instead of documentary like scenes.
8:10 National Geographic did a documentary on pterosaurs, around the same time they did sea monsters, I can remember what it was called but it was on the special effects trivia/trailers on Sea Monsters disc's extras.
Hi your channel is amazing, Can you please review Primal animation and Prehistoric Planet documentary?
U plan on doing a prehistoric predators from national geographic review
I can provide an explanation regarding the inclusion of Edmontonia & Azhdarchids in the Alaskan setting, both have been found in other formations within the state. An Azhdarchid trackway was discovered in Denali National park in 2009 ( no bones though), and the partial skull of an Edmontonia ( sp) was found in the Matanuska formation in the 1960s.
Should I try and make something educational about dinosaurs in pivot animator? Since deez documentaries can't do it...
Love the name!
@@redraptorwrites6778 my username?
I do not believe Tyrannosaurs had feathers because a large animal in that environment:
1. Would not need feather. This area was most likely a tropical environment, not cold.
2. They would overheat. An animal like that would produce enough body heat without feathering.
I DO however believe they may have had fuzz.
Unless your nanuqsaurus or yuturannous
Flying monsters 3d with David Attenborough is a documentary about pterosaurs and their “evolution” through time. I would humbly recommend this one for the next video.
16:08 in the march of dinosaurs review, didn't you Say that P. perotorum was described and named in 2013?
Oh dont dont mind me i'm Just waiting for Red Raptor to cover preistorich Planet on this series
What is your next dinosaur documentary review and we are all ears now
Since this is a kid film would it even count as a doc also will you ever do beyond T-Rex prehistoric predators prehistoric hunters and dinotasia please I need an answer
10:13 You should have used Hey Paul joke when you reviewed Planet Dinosaur and allosaurus axe hypothesis.
While this film is terrible I love the soundtrack, minus the dumb early 2010 pop songs they threw in there because we have to market to dumb kids, because dinosaurs aren't "interesting enough"...
Where can you find the Benedict Cumberbatch narrated version?
When I first saw this movie as a kid, I liked it, now when I look back at it, I have mixed feelings about it.
What is your next dinosaur documentary review and this is a movie not a documentary but it was a favorite growing up
10:38 What is that sculpture? Why is there a huge forked horn?
20:30 new favorite UA-camr because he mentioned the beauty that is Zoboomafoo (and cause he talks about dinosaurs)
Great video as always. I reviewed this movie years ago and yeah the studio mandated voice overs absolutely ruin it. The jokes are some of the worst I have ever heard in a movie for a product made for any age demographic. It also features a generally terrible soundtrack that feels completely inappropriate for a dinosaur movie. Prehistoric Planet basically was everything I wanted from this movie
But the animation is genuinely great and to this day holds up well. Despite coming out 8.5 years before Prehistoric Planet I'd say it visually is not far behind at all. The creatures look excellent and pre-2022 it was easily the most beautiful recreation of the age of dinosaurs and looked fantastic in 3D. Assuming you turn off the god damn terrible voice track.
I did much latter see the Cumberbatch narrated cut and that one has a few editing problems but overall is much better. But I had to rip that version from the internet because they never even gave it a Blu-Ray release. It is sad studio executives seem to think dumb poop jokes are required for children to enjoy dinosaur movies. I was a kid when the first Walking with Dinosaurs came out and I was plenty entertained without them
When I was younger I loved this movie. Now I still love this movie. I don’t even think of it as a documentary.
Will u do "The World After The Dinosaurs" in this series?
Christ, this movie had ACTUAL potential. This could’ve been so great, but Fox just FUCKED it all up. No Fox, children aren’t stupid brainless worms, no Fox, constant jokes about shit and fart isn’t funny. Movie companies NEED to understand that children are smarter than you think, they CAN handle animals acting like animals, they CAN handle fight scenes. Good god
I have a question did giganotosaurus have to chew with food or did it just swallow it like alligators and crocodiles
20:25 I've seen this artsyle before and I love it, you know the artist?
I thought that the Quetzals were in fact their recently discovered arctic relative, Cryondrakon, since it was found in Canada (which would’ve also migrated to Alaska for the summer feeding) and it lived around the time range of 70 million years ago.
I don’t know if you’re going to read this or not, but can you talk about the documentary, “amazing dinoworld” in one of your videos?
I was 7 years old when this movie came out, I eventually had it recorded on my TV and I watched it almost every day, cause I loved dinosaurs, my older brother hated it, not because it had shitty voiceacting just because I hogged the TV for it, so he deleted it someday, I had already watched it atleast 100 times but man, that was heartbreaking for little me, and unfortunately due mass nostalgia, I can still watch it and enjoy it un-ironically, plus for me Im easily able to drown out the voice acting and enjoy the scenery and the accurate depictions
I have a question about Troodontids. If the family namesake Troodon is a dubious genus, shouldn’t the family be renamed to stenonychosaurids for something?
For anyone wondering, there is the cucumberpatch narrated version that is astronomically better and yes its on youtube
Also the main character animals talk through inner monologues which is why they don't sync up and might make animal sounds over the dialogue
I remember I saw on internet that movie while searching for Walking with Dinosaurs, I saw 3D animation and heard dubbing, I quickly quit the streaming site XD
Yea so there was a non dubbed version I saw in a museum in San Diego that was much shorter but its good that you mentioned the better version.
16:54 Granted, the paleontologist might have exaggerated for the sake of keeping his nephew and niece interested.
Will you be doing a review on camp cretaceous season 5?
This Stupid serie ?
The grass bit was a task failed successfully moment
As a kid I thought this movie was super underrated, but looking back, god it’s terrible. I wonder if they could make the dialogue work without it being so annoying.
ua-cam.com/video/1mGh7YYuLns/v-deo.html here u go
I think the tyrannosaurus probably had a light feather covering that maybe shed their feathers in warmer times of the year and gain feathers when it’s cold
Whats the Troodon argument? im a noob to these kinda discussions lol.
8:08 can someone tell me where this is from
I would like to recommend Dead Sound’s Dinosauria series. I think they look pretty good, and would like to hear your thoughts on it.
18:16 Was the genus Troodon valid until 2017?
Fun fact: this movie was also animated by Animal Logic, the same company that worked on Happy Feet and Legend of the Guardians.
That explains the beautiful and realistic graphics. I've noticed every other animation company seems to think that realistic animals are unappealing or too unexpressive, but I highly disagree. I love seeing realistic animals even in unrealistic situations. It only takes small modifications to their anatomy to make them expressive. Like in this movie's case where it makes their eyes bigger and their lips a bit more malleable, and that's basically it. And it works perfectly. It's not uncanny and it's great to look at.
Unfortunate that the storytelling was botched by the dubbing and the constant pauses.
