I'm glad they made the bass drum 20". Pitch is determined by diameter, not depth, and many people don't want a 16" or 18" kick that sounds like a tom. Nice. As usual it's always a pleasure to see Nick play.

I love this set. The bass drum is perfect with just a touch of internal muffling and no port. It has a nice boom and punch. I was just going to use this for a little practice set. I ended up getting more toms from this series. Mine are the surf green. I got full sized 10,12,13, toms and 14 floor. they sounds great in my room. I'm now going to use these for recording and gigs as well. My other set is a Ludwig classic maple 20,10,12,14 and all maple Signia Larger set with more power toms from the 90's. These stage customs are different but very cool. For small gigs I will use this with whatever toms work for the set. I did have to get some mounts and mount the toms to stands. The BD is too shallow for larger toms. They sit too close and I could not adjust them to sit back enough. If I need a larger BD I'll use the classic maple, with the stage custom toms or classic's. Also the small tom from the hip work great mounted and pitched high...maybe even single head. The snom on the HH side is fun. The snare is great and a different flavor than my other snares...Black Beauty, supra phonic, acrolite, and 14x7 N&C Maple. These Yamaha's are just impressive to me. I did not know I was a birch fan and Yamaha fan until I got these. So many possibilities adding this little set to your collection.

I have owned that kit for a month now . I bought it to incorporate into my Roland TD-17kvx as an electronic / acoustic set up . The color ( Raven Black ) is sweet. Transparent black. Held up to sunlight it has an almost violet hue . Gorgeous. Anyway , the 10" tom sounds the best out of the box. Not too crazy about the 13" floor tom / snare thing. But with the right heads and tuned tight , I feel it has potential. Ditto the bass drum. The 13 x 5 snare matches the theme of this set up and doesn't sound too bad . Again , change the heads. I tuned mine a little on the high side and it rang forever. Tuned it down and it helped but she still rings. I like the floor tom with the wires off. That drum in particular is loud . In a good way . This is a nice kit for a hybrid set up. You could even convert these to full electronic . Wouldn't be cheap but it would look awesome .

Kick sounds nice and low, sounds as if you'd have to make an additional purchase for a traditional 4/5 piece kit though... Yamaha stage customs have been my go to for years. I mostly have played Reggae/Ska, and styles including Afrobeat and Afro-Caribbean/Latin genres. I recently bought the Tama SLP ft/snr combo drum to add to a frankenstein studio kit and it does the trick with a random 16" ft and 10" and 12" Yamaha sc toms with an old random 20×14 kd which sound great all together. Still, I recently purchased a Sonor Safari kit and am really happy with it for jazz gigs and general playing. Point is make your purchasing decisions on what will serve the music and the gig best. I may actually pick up this kit, but the extra purchase for a true ft might put it over for me...

I think the FT/snare combo is out of the box thinking from Yamaha. It certainly makes this kit more unique compared to other small "portable" kits.
I just wonder if the FT should have been a rack/stand mount over the legs. However, since the Crosstown hardware is the obvious choice, they probably aren't ideal for hanging a tom off them ?

Hey, jasonalves442. Thanks so much for your interest. I personally like both for different reasons. I really like the hip kit for small bar and outside street gigs. The bass drum is surprisingly punchy. The bop kit I like for a more traditional jazz gig. Both are great. Head selection depends on what you’re playing and what sound you like. I like a more open sound so for me, it would be coated ambassadors all the way.

Nick D”Virgilio makes it seem easy to do but make no mistake, Nick is a great drummer. So clean, so musical.
Listening to this drums now, I did the right thing buying the Tama Club Jam.
The sound of Tama is excellent and I didn't like the sound of that Yamaha..
I think that in transport, the kick spurs of this yamaha are left out of the shell. In my UA-cam channel, there are videos of Tama Club Jam with the direct sound of the camera, and the drums has a much better sound than this Yamaha. That for $ 300 less. With the same amount of money, you can buy the Tama Club Jam, the Tama classic hardware pack (light and brilliant) and there is still money left for drumsticks. This Yamaha is cool, but the Tama Club Jam is much more.

13" snare is not a versatile weapon. it has no side stick. I have never heard a 13" snare give a nice hollow knock, the way a 14" snare does. This one proves my theory is still intact.
The 13" floor tom/snare is very viable as a fat snare. I like this kit, but i would use a 14" snare instead of the 13".

I am really disappointed with Tama, and Yamaha moving their factory to China. Japanese drum products are a superior in quality, but now, they are outsourcing to China. That’s a shame because you can count on Japanese quality. I would rather buy drums that are made in Taiwan or Japan if I was to purchase Asian made drums . Yamaha is a high caliber company and I wish they maintained their manufacturing in Japan. If you want a cheaper alternative, look into The Little Roomer by Dixon Drums. It’s 500 dollars for something comparable. The badge on these drums say made in China. On a lighter note, we have phenomenal drums made right here in the USA.

Lee Michael Oravetz their Recording custom and maple hybrid line are made in China and they’re phenomenal. Playing Yamaha all my life I would argue that they’re quality is better now than ever.

Why would you want a snare on a tom?😦

Check out some of thomas langs videos. It's an interesting concept. There was an Italian drum company that made a floor tom where you can control the tuning with a foot pedal similar to a timpani drum. Billy Cobham played one with Horace silver. All about the creativity.
