Accident Scoreboard w/ Old-School Bulb Display

- You asked for it! After nailing my finger to a sign frame, I took your advice and created an old-fashioned workplace "accident scoreboard," but with an auto-incrementing readout, fashioned after the now-obsolete, but much more aesthetically pleasing, incandescent "eggcrate" displays of old.

CIRCUIT INFORMATION
I'm using an Adafruit ItsyBitsy 32u4 (5v) to run the display, with an Adafruit PCF8523 real time clock breakout board to read the time. (Both linked above.) I'm using three 74HC595N shift registers to trigger the 22 channels in the display, each switched using an FQP30N06L logic-level MOSFET. The bulbs are all 12VDC #428 miniature-base (E10) incandescents. The buzzer and the button are both listed above.

Man you should really stop forgetting to lock your shop door!
Like that would've stopped you.
I was getting in the comments to mention completely unexpected visitor!
Can we expect a collaboration of some sort in the future?
I suspect that's an eventuality.
Next time lock the door. Suddenly colab with LPL...
I love how you start your videos. It always feels like I've been watching the video for a lot longer or as if I just stepped into your shop while you're working on something, and you welcome me with open arms and start explaining what you're doing. Love it!
HUGE props for working out the official scoreboard font. I worked for FairPlay back in the 1990s and loved their 7 segment font that used a more pleasing “script” for the segments rather than 7 discrete bars. It takes more channels per digit, but looks so much better. FairPlay’s number “4” had the upper left corner lamp OFF and I think that was actually patented or trademarked, IIRC.
omg you‘re right! That’s really cool. At first I was surprised he‘d need 2 days for programming but with taking time for details like that it makes sense.
Love the dot-matrix sounds on the 3d printer. Makes me nostalgic for the old Jetson's saw.
These look great. I’ve always admired your ability to paint and mask and know what it will look like in the end. Very cool.
Looks great! I like it, two digits, optimistic, but realistic.
I wish we had a microcenter in FL
Hey, at least you remembered the word days this time! As usual, I loved this project! Thanks for putting a smile on my face.
WHOOOHOOO XYLA! WHOOOHOOO super awesome display!
Using the laminator to make the boards is such a good idea! I'll definitely be looking into that further!
The circuit boards look so nice. One of those things that will probably never be seen, but a nice treat (WT™) for anyone who would have to do a repair. Also, the laminator is a great idea that made me unreasonably mad.
Your soldering is Fine. And you’re using a reasonable tip size.
I wish there could be a new video from Wesley Treat every day. But I understand and really do appreciate the time and quality you put into your projects and videos. Please, don't stop doing what you do. It's great.
When the bells start ringing and the band begins to play
Great project!
Hey I just watched one of your videos from 5 years ago and realized that you have the exact same equipment and just made a handmade (kind of) circuit. Incredible.
i LOVE the buzzer, like it's scolding you when you reset it.
That blank stare is 90% of my workshop time when working with Arduino/Circuit based projects! :D
Yuuup
Great watching your videos, its very theraputic for me
If any of those scoreboards were available (Jan. '23) they would be way over my budget!
14:45, nice Cameo!
Very nice job. Turned out very well there Wesley. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep making. God bless.
Such a fun project! Very cool design. I do appreciate how you think. 😁 Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful! I want one… with the lights and the buzzer, although I think I’d be inventing reasons to hit it too often
Outstanding!
That looks awesome!
Wes, I wanted to do a similar idea, only for broken Renishaw probe tips(seriously, those%£€¥$ things are expensive!), after seeing the sticker John Saunders briefly offered. The electronics were the sticking point, but you just solved that problem, thanks!
Chain! The coarsest possible steel wool! :-)
Wonderful build. Lots of great details. I have been looking forward to hearing the buzzer since I saw it in the circuit in recent IG post. Buzzer did not disappoint.
Homer S. Making one of his, noise’s. Priceless.
9:57 - Unless I'm mistaken, that's blood, so you're already starting this off from zero! 😁
Good eye. Clumsily pulled out a stubborn shift register that promptly stabbed me with pin 8. I'll put it in a Patreon video.
When you got to the point where you questioned why the led's were blinking, my first assumption was the breadboard. I once banged my head against a desk for 3 days on the stupidest tiny sketch for my arduino that was doing very confounding things that shouldn't be possible. Come to find out the breadboard was faulty, the sketch was fine. Now I avoid the cheapest level of breadboard and buy at least the mid grade. Another great vid!
Great project! Every shop needs one!
Did you just make your own board? Wow.
So stinkin' smart he is! I could watch him all day!
@14:35 Hey! We've seen those hands before! Isn't that Xyla?!
One of my all time favorite albums
At 5:07 you can see how cool you'd look with a stache
Absolutely loved this video! I was laughing the whole time. Thank you for helping to make this 12 hour shift bearable.
Love the totally random Xyla cameo.
17:15 2nd digit is only used when you take a 2 week vacation lol
Excellent video, great project idea and cool sign! 👍😎
This man does love a river - also I love this channel.
This dude always has the precision control set on max.
Superb work it looks awesome .
Great film. You have the best zombie weapons. 1:10. 👍 Sign is awesome! My sign would read in hours not days. 😁 Mahalo for sharing! 🙂🐒
Someday I want to grow up to be just like you 😆
I was wondering on the second digit myself then you addressed it :D I wouldn't need it either :D Excellent, as always !!
I was one of the people who asked for you to add a sign like this to your merch store. I don't know why I would have expected you to add a cheap, mass-produced sign when your specialty is beautiful works of advertising art! Sadly, I won't be buying one from you... But you have inspired me to make something similar (though maybe a little less ambitious) and I hope that's a small consolation.
I expect I may offer up an inexpensive, printed version sometime in the future. For the time being, I'll be hand fabricating the all-metal versions. 👍
16:30 Uuugh, all that work only to be foiled..... 16:30 tHanks for a fun video ( Everything's Adjustable sent me)
I thought I had a good joke about that second digit being just for aesthetics, but you beat me to it.
LOVE IT! For me the count with out a DUMB would be in minutes. Sigh! Thanks!!
I must have a higher opinion of myself than you -- I was going to ask for one showing hours.
Yay! It's a WT Video!
😂 I was just going to ask why you went with two digits… warped minds think alike! Can’t wait for more.
So you just have to leave your door open for Xyla Foxlin to just walk in like a stray cat? Is that how it works? No need to say her name three times in front of a mirror or anything? No summoning circle made of laminated wood?
In truth, I lured her with tacos.
It's interesting how this has come full circle. Radio Shack used to have all this stuff, no one wanted it, now they're gone (more or less) and now Micro Center (I have one near me in NE Ohio) is picking up where they left off.
I seem to remember Radio Shack made a last ditch effort to appeal to the emerging maker community shortly before they went under by carrying a few Arduino boards and such, but they half-assed it and missed their window.
@@WesleyTreat You're absolutely right. I was the nerdy 12 year old kid that spent his Saturday afternoons in that store browsing all the electronics kits and wishing I had the money to buy them. I managed to build a couple here and there.
Gotta get me one of those dot-matrix 3d printers
I recently completed my first Arduino project, learnt so much and it worked perfectly !
I Haz Dumb has been used a lot lately by myself!
Handsome! You can always stick a post it over the word "days" saying "hours", with a small software change! 🤣
Love it. I hope you never have to press that button ever again 😁
Love the video Wes, keep up the good work
I've found that it saves time to just paint the '0' on the board.
So did you and Xyla do a project together? Some Sheet Metal / Epoxy masterpiece that floats in water and cooks hot dogs?
It was a last-minute visit, but I expect we'll collab at some point.
I’m just so really glad you speak in your videos.
Nothing is more annoying and banal than the endless videos of people silently making, pointing and tapping on shit.
So thank you, love the vids!
You probably shouldn't watch my older videos, then.
You must be new here 😂
Cool
There's something about your signs which is very reminiscent of the scoreboard at Wimbledon Centre Court.
I know what you mean about big buttons not being big enough. I spent hours searching ebay for a big enough button for my current project
I just realized that you should call your business "Wesley Treat Foundries". That way you can abbreviate it "WTF" 😂
Please let there be a Xyla crossover project incoming!
Awesome episode 👍👍👍👍. Just had to laugh that you felt you couldn’t exceed 99 days ……. I know I can’t do something dumb 99 days straight. 😂🤣😂🤣
You mean you passed up on the opportunity to use aluminum brazing sticks? LOL! You really wanted to use those rivets 🤣
We used to have like 5 Radio Shacks and a CompUSA here... Now it's an electronics wasteland 🥺
I coach a couple of high school robotics teams that share the same lab space. I'm trying to decide if we need to make one of these, or one for each team... I know that I will personally be pressing the button often enough due to my own dumbs.
I like the lack of optimism of only allowing for 99 days without a dumb.
Won't the heat from the incandescent bulbs deform the 3D printed plastic surround eventually? Or how low powered are they?
They're about 3 watts max, and I never have them turned all the way up.
Only two digits?
I dunno, maybe you should have an 'Hours' icon on it? Possibly minutes, you seem a bit accident prone.
9:58 yo wes, did you cut or stab something in your right thumb? i see some red on your thumb!! i hope its healed by now
Slotted screws are better than Phillips. Change my mind
Hey Wesley, if you happen to see this, could you share your cutter type, speeds and feeds for aluminum? Thanks!
For this project, I used the settings below, on 6061 alum. But, keep in mind this sort of thing changes depending on your particular machine. Good luck!
Bit: amzn.to/3sjqnUV
DPP: 0.01"
Feed: 20 ipm
Plunge: 10 ipm
Ramp in: 0.5"
@@WesleyTreat Thank you! My machine is a little more beefy, but I tend to break cutters on the final pass. I'll try that cutter, and toning down my DPP and feed on those last few passes.
Xyla!
Pretty sure she's been stalking me.
I don't think I would get much use out of this. It would continually be set at 0! Lol
You only designed in two digits. Pessimistic or realistic?
Micro Center…I waaaaaant!
Yes now the 3D printer has custom sounds
I really like this idea and the video as a whole but I don’t understand “a dumb” why isn’t it “an accident”
Hi, you must be new here, welcome to the channel!
I had to laugh as I saw the tiny clamp on your Proxxon. I use a zip tie to hold the handle on place.
Regards,
Etna.
what's the deal with the spring over the drill bit? anybody know?
Depth stop
Wesley - you embody Heinlein's aphorism "specialization is for ants" - you can do anything! Including leaving your door unlocked (WOWSER!)
I had a dumb accident earlier this year, involving a router and a thumb 🤕
I like big buttonz, and I cannot lie......
I wish micro center would open a store in AZ (Phoenix) America's 5th largest city and since Fry's went under, we now have NO large computer or maker stores... Fry's I could go in and get anything from a single resistor to building a computer or a new tv or car accessories... Before that we have Incredible Universe, now we have nothing... Just the normal big box stores like Best Buy who dont sell anything of need...
I'll have a word with them.
Need to cross out the DAYS with HOURS graffiti in red paint. Maybe that second digit will get used a bit more.
And now all I can think is "First. First. First. First..."
Never planning on a hundred days or more? Safety 3rd.
You said you lured Xyla in with tacos?
Sure it wasn't the smell of a charcoal fired furter burner?!
Funny, he said Microcenter had a selection of Raspberry PIs.... they have been out of them for months.
You know, I'm really, really glad you said that, because I just checked online and bought myself a Pi 4 Model B that I'm going to pick up at my local store tomorrow. So, thanks!
Great project and video! Nice cameo, too. Makes me wonder if I should leave my workshop door unlocked. But then out here, the only likely visitors would be raccoons and whitetail. Thumbs up - thanks for posting!
Wesley, you only plan on going 99 days without a dumb? Should have at least made 3 or 4 digits!
Sadly I am several thousand miles from any Microcentre
This would stay on 0 in my shop! 🤣
haha you bought flashing leds
