I used to listen to "learn Japanese with Masa Sensei" but it's not for immersion, it just helps when you're an absolute beginner, specially if you lack time. I used to listen to it while stuck in traffic and it was great for some vocabulary and new grammar points.
I love Nihongo Switch, I find her explanations of Japanese idioms in Japanese very interesting and funny :) and I like Japanese with K, who oftens has interesting topics too I think, and slightly easier than Nihongo Switch imo. Thank you for the video ! Tons of the podcast recommended seem very interesting ! Can’t wait to have a good level enough to understand the one abt linguistics and the one abt history ! And I was looking for a shadowing podcast !!!! Thanks for the last one then :)

Teppei's beginner podcast is soooooo good, it got to a point i could almost completely understand an entire episode after about 3 months of studying and it made me SO happy (ive been on break from learning because i was moving a lot and just recently got my books back, lost most of my notes though 😢)

I think all beginners (+ some intermediate) would also benefit from Benjiro - Beginner Japanese, Comprehensible Japanese, Japanese with Shun, The Bite size Japanese Podcast, Sakura Tips, Nihongo-Learning, Learn Japanese with Tanaka san and a fairly new one called Daily Japanese with Naoko. YAKO KIMURA's Think in Japanese is also a good natural conversation podcast that deserves some attention. For grammar and JLPT Chika Sensei and of course 日本語の森. This could go on all day so I'll leave it there for now :). I realise some of these are youtube channels more than podcasts. Thanks again!
Thanks! Yeah, I watched all of Benjiro's when I first started studying. Those are great. Too bad he stopped making videos. Of course 日本語の森 too. I smashed through their videos leading up to the n1 exam. I'll have to check out the ones I don't know. As you said a lot of these are UA-cam channels. Great list, especially as I'm trying to transition from contents aimed at Japanese learners (big Teppei fan) to standard podcasts in Japanese. In this category, I absolutely recommend Peter Barakan's The Lifestyle Museum. Great cultural contents with guest interviews on a large variety of topics + ideal length (30 mn).
That's great! Someone else recommended The Lifestyle Museum and I've been listening to it a lot. It's great. Asahishinbun podcast is similar sometimes (they have a lot of different programs within the podcast).
another podcast I recommend is ことのは日本語の会話のPodcast！they talk about a bunch of different interesting topics and relating to japanese society and everyday life, and mainly do topics from N3-Above N1, but have beginner segments too!
For learning Japanese I like Miku very much. She's a great teacher. When it comes to native level podcasts (not for learning, but more to keep Japanese in my ears) I like to listen to なんちゃラジオ, the podcast of an idol group called なんちゃらアイドル.
I'll have to look for the RSS feeds of the other casts.

Great list. My favourite is Bilingual News. It's so good I'd listen to it just for the content, but the fact it's half in Japanese is icing on the cake. I highly recommend it!
A great one for beginners is “Japanese with Kanako” She puts a lot of work into her shadowing podcasts and I find them extremely useful.

Thanks for the great inspiration! This is very helpful regarding the podcast jungle. "Learn Japanese with Noriko", "Miku Real Japanese podcast" are my favorites. I like the videos from the channel "japanese with Naoko". I like listening to yuyu as well, even when it is more advanced.

For Brazilians, the best podcast is nihongo na prática, a Brazilian fluent in Japanese does lives on social networks with live questions, about 200 people watch the lives and send questions on how to say something in Japanese, then he passes the audio to the podcast, ranging from basics to advanced.

Wow I wish you uploaded this when I started in 2020. I was listening to native level content for a year straight and in late 2021 just started watching Yuyu and Akane's videos. The rest of these would've given me more progress had I watched them before! I even looked up "best Japanese podcasts videos" back then and got nothing. Haha
Haha same! That's why I made this video because I couldn't find one like it. It's never too late to listen to them though. Like I said in the video I still listen to all different levels of stuff.
I passed the JlptN5 this year and listening to podcasts helps a lot. I already listen to Nihongo to teppei which to me is quite comprehensible, but it s not the case with miku. So even at beginner level, there are different "sub levels" i would say. I obviously encourage beginners to listen to teppei
i'll check the others but usually they are way more difficult
Yeah, you're definitely right. It's a bit difficult to grade them though so I just put them in native and non native basically. I hope you find some of these useful for you. I don't think Let's Talk Japanese would be any harder than Teppei so check that one out.

Its not a podcast channel but i think that もしもしゆうすけ is good for people that want to learn japanese. He is doing amazing job with subtitles and it helps with learning vocabulary and grammar.

Most of them don't. You should really use podcasts. No ads, easy to download for when you're on the go, and just easier to listen continuously to than UA-cam. I use UA-cam a lot too but it can't replace podcasts.
As many others have said, thank you for this list! I've struggled for years trying to find good podcasts to listen for advanced Japanese. Because it's close to halloween, I think I'll try さむいぼラジオ first.

I’d love to see a video of other recommendations you have for UA-cam channels. It’s another space of the internet that’s has a lot of native content that’s hard to navigate if you have low level Japanese like me

*4989 America life: A 40s woman talks about her life in America. She aims at native Japanese but provides free scripts for Japanese learners.
*Nihongo switch: Each ep. goes deeply in a grammar point or a group of idiom, as well as how to use them in real life. This podcast is helpful no mater which level are you.
*Let's learn Japanese from small talk: 2 young girls talk about daily topics. They was quite popular but do not update recently.

Question on your listening though, with the podcasts you listen to, do you try to push your abilities by listening to things that are above your current comprehension level, or do you focus on comprehension first and then moving into harder topics?
I'm currently around N3 level but am struggling with progressing higher as the jump from intermediate to advanced is mountainous. I find the next level of podcasts to be really difficult as they tend to be in super hard / super quick Japanese aimed at Japanese people or advanced learners. For example, Miku's podcast, I can understand about 65% - 75% of it (Depending on the subject) but Coten Radio I'm around 25% comprehension. Would you suggest stick with something like Miku until I get higher comprehension or challenge myself with Coten Radio?

No worries. It's a good question. Glad you're finding my videos useful btw. Coten radio is really high level! I mean it's about history so there's a lot of vocabulary you don't usually hear. I think it is perhaps better for our learning and motivation to go with things that are just a bit above our level. So dokuzetu American life might be a good start with native-aimed content. It's about American culture so that makes it much easier to understand. And it's more everyday topics. Also Donguri FM and one I learned about recently called Morning Dog Show. Those kind of zatsudan type podcasts will be easier to start with. Also just keep listening to those conversational ones aimed at Japanese learners. Those will help a lot.

After becoming a mother, I stopped learning Japanese for 6 years. My life changed 2 years ago when I discovered the universe of Podcasts (unknown to me). For 2 years I have been listening to podcasts, but only a couple of them, the ones for learners. I am very indebted to those podcasts but all of a sudden you have opened a new world up for me, thank you so much for that. Now I have so many hours to keep busy listening to podcasts, it is just amazing and also a challenge to listen to podcast for Japanese native speakers. Thanks for the list. There are some on here I haven't heard of and will definitely check out. I like to listen to Nihongo Switch the woman that does this one provides transcripts you can download, for laughs モーニングドッグショー (they also have a youtube channel but don't update as often), I live in Kansai so if you want some Kansai-ben there's a podcast by 3 siblings that are half-Japanese and it's chaotic called 大阪育ちハーフ３兄弟, there are more but I won't bore you. If anyone wants to know hit me up.
Oh! I used to listen to Nihongo Switch. I forgot about that one. I'll check out the others that you said. I live in Kansai too so I'm always keen to listen to Kansai-ben. Aitan from the Japanese Bake Off was doing a good podcast filled with Kansai ben with her husband but they stopped posting. It's pretty funny though so you could still check out the old episodes. Samuibo rajio that I mentioned here uses kansai ben too (even the title). Thanks for your recommendations!

Thanks for the addition! I've seen her UA-cam channel pop up in my recommendations but she explains things in English, right? I tried to stick to Japanese only even from the beginning so didn't watch it. What's her podcast like?
@@baribarijapan It's made for beginners for sure. She says english words few and there only. I am just upper beginner and I can understand almost everything without effort. I think it's one of the easiest podcast to understand. She spoke about her experiences, every day topics and so on. For more advanced learners might be too easy. I guess she is good at speaking that way because her boyfriend is an english speaker who is learning japanese.

At what level should you be before I would start listening to podcasts. Iv only gotten to lesson 5 on the genki 1 text book so I won't understand anything on the podcast yet. Thanks
It's never too early to start getting used to the phonemes of Japanese so I'd say get into it. Maybe start with Teppei's beginner podcast. It's very simple Japanese. I talked about this kind of thing in this video about my route from zero to JLPT N1 ua-cam.com/video/cAqQNq2Icz8/v-deo.html

The majority of Japanese podcasts seem old skool radio DJ personality driven chat show or news and lifestyle type. Are there any slightly more experimental type shows based purely on subscriber material such as This is Actually Happening or Lets Read? The podcasts seem a bit mundane here, much like the radio. There must be some leftfield stuff out there surely? I havent found anything yet and UA-cam seems to be a better place for content perhaps the underground view podcasts a bit like the facebook of the streamed content world.
Yeah, that's true. Podcasts are still kind of unknown in Japan. Most people don't know what they are so there are just less podcasts to begin with. Then I'd say most media is generally less edgy or experimental in Japan. The ones I talked about towards the end of this video are the most interesting ones that I've come across.

Just found your channel recently, great videos! Here are a few recommendations apart from those mentioned in the video, probably intermediate to upper intermediate-ish (all but the first one are aimed at native speakers):
1.Thinking in Japanese Podcast : A lot of philosopical and self-help-esque topics. Includes some difficult words, but is spoken slowly/clearly, sometimes with a little English to help out.
2. 大原ゆい子のちるあうとラジオ : This one is only on UA-cam, but it's almost entirely audio-only. A chill podcast where singer-songwriter Ōhara Yuiko talks about various topics, including her favorite foods and new things she's into. She also asks the listeners questions and reads people's responses to previous questions. There's also a section in each episode where she sings either a song she's chosen herself, or a song that was requested by a listener.
3. ゲームデザインの話 : A former Nintendo programmer talks with guests from the game industry about various topics related to game design and the games industry in general.
4. Bright Bit Brothers : Two guys talk about video games from the 80s and 90s in a very informative way. A typical episode goes through the history of a single retro game or console (development, sales numbers, what was special about it, what else happened around that time in gaming, etc.)
