Also, most of them are giving me many of superior techniques for self-learning Japanese from a successful person. Many thanks for your good works brother 👍.

Thanks for this! As a working parent myself, it's always a balance. Nice to hear how others make it work.
I've often thought that active immersion (e.g. reading, watching anime) was far superior to passive immersion (e.g. listening to a podcast while doing something else), but you make a good point in that passive listening is how we all started learning our native language.
Also, thanks for the podcast recommendation video! I was able to find my go-to podcast thanks to it =)

Appreciate you calling out the opportunities here to get in extra study, I do this but in reality it doesn't add up to more than an hour a day for me as I live fairly close to work. That is still significant but any more than that and my family, especially my daughter, would comment on me always being distracted by my headphones and phone!
This comes down to me working long hours and needing to take the time with my family to really interact... So in the end it is trying to find a good balance!
*Ah good to see you called this out at the end :)*

Yeah, it's definitely not so easy with a family and a job. My daughter is still only one so I get time when she's napping or when I am pushing her in her stroller etc but I imagine it gets harder as they get older. I know I still have it easier than some people but the reason I wanted to make this video was to give some ideas to people in a similar situation. Best of luck with your studies!

Although there is merit in increasing the quantity of input throughout your day, I personally have experienced a point where my brain just could not concentrate anymore.
I think it's an extremely stressful way to think about learning. If every time I have some brain downtime I should put on some Japanese, then I'm gonna get exhausted and start hating Japanese and I won't be able to make any progress.
I would recommend morning study/podcast and some light custom Anki cards,
Also prepare in advance UA-cam playlists of podcasts you want to listen to, for your commute,
But not try to get more Japanese in than your brain and body can handle.

    • @baribarijapan

Maybe you didn't watch to the end because I did say that it's important to balance studying with the rest of your life, and I also said the same thing that it's important to have a stock of stuff prepared that you're actually interested in. Also I get that some people might feel burned out. For me I don't feel like I'm burning out because I don't push myself to do anything I don't feel like doing. If I have fun podcasts, interesting books and shows, even video games then it doesn't feel stressful for me. I feel okay with not understanding sometimes so for me it's honestly no less relaxing than watching stuff in English. But everyone is different and can do what works for them. I was just explaining what worked for me.

This works a lot for language learning. I learnt Most of my early Japanese from listening to anime and Jdrama and when I started to learn without listening, I found it much harder to remember compared to listening to that topic.
But nowadays I find it hard to listen while doing something as my brain has started to filter it as noise and so I end up not paying much attention to it.. ofc I still learn a bit since I do it for hours but it’s much less from before

Thank you for this video its really helpful hearing how you learned, especially because I am a uni student so have studies, work and social life (with my long term partner) so find it hard to fit in loads of study. Can i just ask, how much grammar/vocab did you learn before you started immersion? As i find this is one point i struggle with, after only a few weeks of japanese if i try listening to anything it feels far too advanced. Is listening still beneficial even if I only understand tiny tiny amounts just for me to get a feel for the spoken language while I continue to learn grammar and kanji through written study until I begin to fully understand what I am listening to?
I want to learn quickly as I plan to move to Japan to teach English when I graduate from uni, I graduate in a year so I'd say I have about 2 years before I move there and my goal is to know enough that I can hold conversations with work colleagues and potential friends and to be able to learn just from full immersion by that point. I would also like to take a JLPT test before I go but I don't have an exact level in mind as a goal just yet. I would really appreciate hearing back from you, ありがとうございます

I'm glad you found it useful. I think I mentioned it in this video (if not in this one ua-cam.com/video/cAqQNq2Icz8/v-deo.html ) but I spent the first few months actively studying kanji and grammar, and then would listen to stuff when my brain was dead from more active study or when I was busy cooking, cleaning, walking etc. Listening as much as possible is definitely important. It helps build up the phonemic awareness you need to actually be able to hear the words that you've learned before. A lot of people that study any language with textbooks and lots of reading find that they can't hear words that actually they "know" already. If you didn't see it already I put up a video recommending podcasts and I started with the easier ones, so those would probably be good to listen to at this point.
