We sang ‘Country Roads’, 10 days ago at my brother’s funeral… 😭😭😭
My brother was THE West Virginia University Mountaineer mascot for 3 years.
Mountaineer fans have been singing ‘Country Roads’ after every victory in every sport, for years.
My younger brother and I kept it a secret… at the end of the funeral service we started the song… of course everyone started singing along.
RIP Greg Lewis, best Mountaineer ever. 😇
I love your comment and so sorry you and your family lost him. Blessings from Georgia.
Thank you, friend ❤️😊
So sorry for your loss. What a great tribute to your brother.
I am a proud West Virginian and this is our anthem. Great reaction!
When I drive from Ohio to Virginia I go through West Virginia and this song constantly goes on in my head. West Virginia is absolutely gorgeous!! Almost heaven. I have a good friend in Ohio that grew up in West Virginia and when I drive through I always text him how beautiful it is and his response is always... almost heaven!
Did West Virginia ever make this their official state song?
@@willasacco9898 "Take Me Home Country Roads' Is the Official West Virginia State Song | TIME. U.S.Mar 7, 2014"
@@threekidzmom04 Thanks for the info. I can’t think of a more appropriate song for the state.👍
Amen 🙏 God bless America 🇺🇸 and U dear
You can play this tune in any bar around the world and the crowd would join in!
You can't go wrong playing anything John Denver sings. ❤❤❤❤❤
He doesn't get the respect he deserves, one of the best song writers ever
My Mother, a coal miners daughter. Would play this for us in California when we were young. I followed her back to the Virginia's. Now I dread the day that a miners lady, my mountain momma wont be here to sing it with me. ❤
Beautiful song! John Denver was a gifted singer songwriter & actor. He had so many great hits in the 70's-80's. Some of his signature songs were "Rocky Mountain High", "Annie's Song", "Fly Away", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", "Poems, Prayers & Promises", "Calypso", "Sunshine On My Shoulders", "Grandma's Feather Bed" etc. John appeared in several films & television specials during the 70's-80's, including the 1977 hit "Oh, God!", in which he starred alongside George Burns.
Home Free does an awesome version of "Take Me Home, Country Roads".
I was born in 1965. This song instantly brings my minds-eye back to the innocent days of my childhood, driving for miles down dirt roads towards our cottage on Lake Ossippee in New Hampshire. Another classic from John Denver that does the same thing is "Sunshine On My Shoulders". I also remember when John Denver did several TV Christmas specials with The Muppets.
John was/is a national treasure. He sounds as great live or even better than the studio. “Annie’s Song” and “Poems Prayers and Promises” are must hear songs!
This morning I battled through 45 minutes of Detroit traffic to get to work. I just got home after battling the hour commute. This song makes me want to hop on the first thing smokin and gtfo here! My husband passed away in August of 2022 and it's been difficult. I was burying myself in my work to avoid or try to avoid my grief. I think writing out this comment has been kinda therapeutic. I don't necessarily need to work. So yeah, I think I just decided that retirement for me is happening soon! Who knew? All I needed was a little John Denver in my life!
I am so sorry, but I am glad you are healing. I hope you find an amazing adventure to replace work.
Do it! Get yourself out of that rat race and get out to those mountain byways- east, west, or even mid south in the Ozarks. It puts it all in perspective and heals a grieving heart. ❤️.
When I was younger I would go to camp with my boys and without fail when the evening was winding up someone would get out a guitar for a sing along. We would stay up past midnight singing songs that were mostly John Denver songs. Pretty much without fail whatever else happened the night would end with the song “Thank God I’m a Country Boy”. Good times, great memories. You can’t go wrong with John Denver.
Country Roads is one of several official songs of the state. It's played at all of West Virginia University's home sports victories. It's one of the great moments in college sports when the team climbs up into the stands and sings along with the crowd. It's not unusual for the visiting team to stay on the field just to witness this beautiful moment. I first heard this song in 1971 when I was driving from WV to Key West FL to visit my brother who was stationed at the navy base there. We must have heard country roads at least a dozen times on the radio during that drive and dad would crank it up every time.
Hey Shon, great reaction. John Denver is a legend! Definitely do more of him. Two of my favorites by him are "This old guitar", and "Calypso". May he RIP 😢
I saw John Denver sing ‘Country Roads’ to open our new West Virginia University football stadium in 1980. Good times 😁
We sing ‘Country Roads’ after every victory in every sport!
This song is beloved by millions in countries all over the world. Its sentiment is universal.
The beginning of this song grabs you and doesn't let you go. Songs used to have that ability. Music today is dead.
Not quite Heidi! There is a young lady that is going to blow the music industry apart! Her name is Angelina Jordan! Check her out! She is AMAZING!
I have cried only twice when an intertainer died.
Steve Irwin and John Denver.
RIP John and Steve, you are missed.
I am a longhaul truck driver, coast to coast and John has so many States songs he sang that I actually played when I went through the States. Good memories ❤❤
I moved to the country (here in Oklahoma) 4 years ago and I still smile every time I pull off the pavement onto my dirt road.
John Denver was a poet. He is missed. If you are feeling a little crazy, on edge, need a break from the world just say “play John Denver” sit back and chill.
John Denver was so big in the 70’s. There was so much music diversity and he was so appealing.
John Denver soothes your soul in every way! Anytime you are stressed, play some John Denver!🎙🎶
Fell in love with his music in the 70's when i was 14. He was once in a lifetime.
Home is home no matter where it is
Duet with Mama Cass, Leaving on a Jet Plane is a must.
Yes, the lyrics are so evocative of the country. Makes us all feel like we want to live there. I live on the other aide of the world and feel like I want to visit West Virginia!
This song may have the greatest chorus ever. Literally EVERYBODY 40 and up knows this chorus and has sung it with others
John is the only person who has "2" different songs that have been declared State Songs.
"Country Roads" is the official song for WV, of course but Colorado has ALSO declared "Rocky Mountain High" to be THEIR State song.
If you like College Football, UA-cam West Virginia Mountaineers home games after a win. They play this song in the stadium, and the entire crowd sings with the players. It's the best -
Another great artist the world lost because of a plane crash. There have been at least three that I know about but probably so many more.
Right up there with all time best singers, abd lyrics and music writers ever.
So many iconic songs and performances.
Songs of the people and the environment and this planet we are so lucky to be a part of.
Thank you for commenting and sharing.
John Denver would be happy to know that you can feel the urge to sing along. There are a few of these artists who would want that too - Pete Seeger - Arlo Guthrie - are my favorites
You haven't even scratched the surface of John's legacy. And FYI, John peaked at the same time of disco and heavy metal. Tough crowd to sell his style of music. But his voice and messages cut through it all to provide pure genius and simplicity. I have NEVER seen a negative comment ever.! Quite an accomplishment!
This song got John invited to China to do a concert back when the West was not welcome much. Rocky Mtn high is my favorite and is very much about John and Colorado both. I would encourage anyone to go to Aspen and visit the park that has the John Denver memorial in it. Its far out and beautiful.
As a young child this song would make me cry and after 6 decades on this earth it still leaves me weepy! John Denver was a tremendous talent and I can't help but think of the songs that he never got a chance to write and sing. Thank you for this reaction!
That’s what makes this song great. You don’t even have to be from the country and it gets to you. It all about going back home, wherever that is. Back to your roots. Seeing family, the old places and the old friends. Everyone gets the feels with this one.
Country life is SO wonderful. Ignore the stereotypes! Few things are sweeter. Lived all over; country is best.
John Denver is legendary. Check out more of his songs like Rocky Mountain High, Sunshine O My Shoulder, & Thank God I’m A Country Boy.
It's a song that sounds like it always existed.
A good way to put it!
I grew up on the country roads of Iowa and have lived the last 50 years in the city. I'm 75 now and God do I still iss those country roads of
my youth!😅
He was one of the best when it came to lyrics. He could put you right there in whatever he sang. It was tragic how he passed.
Apparently, he ran out of fuel while flying solo and couldn't reach around the back of his seat to the reserve tank and he
crashed. I can't imagine all the songs he would have penned if he were still here. What an artist.
How to feel nostalgic about a place I've never been. Brilliant song!
I'M British bit i have always love John Denvers Music his voice makes you live the song👌👌
If you ever watch West Virginia college football, they always play, and everyone sings along. It is the unofficial state song for West Virginia.
My wife graduated from WVU at the graduation ceremony the entire place sung the song it choked me up big time
Come to Kentucky, you're welcome around our campfire anytime! Great reaction 🔥
Glad you found Denver please listen to the wings that fly us home a heartfelt song and he also died that way in a plane crash.
I was in Boston for my birthday back in 1997. We went to a bar called the Black Rose. There was a band playing and John Denver was there at a table. The band invited him on stage and he sang a few songs. Definitely a birthday to remember.
They play this at all the West Virginia college football games and the crowd goes crazy and sings along!! It's awesome!!
When a song can make one nostalgic for a place they've never been-that's magic. This song was huge when I was, like, 8. Didn't know from Virginia, went over my head. As an adult, it's a song that never gets too far away. So great to watch you discover it, too. Great video!
My very favorite John Denver song. Timeless.
This mountain mama sings right along in harmony and have for many years. And your correct in saying that we all should sing along when the song comes on, and we do! Very enjoyable. I'm so glad the younger generation is exploring other genre's. I really enjoyed your review! Have you reviewed Disturbed's "Sound of Silence?" 😎
he was such a joy. left us way too soon. i love Anything John Denver
Wow 60 years old and still love this song the "70's were so incredible
Love John Denver, his voice was so relaxing and angelic. "Annie's Song", "Thank God I'm A Country Boy", etc..., are good ones, he had so many great hits, it would be worth going down this rabbit hole.
Shon, you have a good heart! So glad you enjoyed the master, of feel good contemporary music,, John loved the land, mountains, and seas. He wrote and sung about things important to our nation, and the world. He saw how beautiful this world can be.
Rocky Mountain High, Sunshine On My Shoulder
💙👵🏼✌🏼love that 12-string guitar 🎸
Its probably been 20 years since ive heard this sing, but i still know all the words to it, thats how popular it was for years.
A singer with nature running through his blood and songs.
John had a great knack for being able to take you on a journey.
I can remember my dad telling me that John Denver now I maybe wrong but corpus Christi Texas was his last concert before he died in the plan crash and corpus Christi stands for the body of Christ just sayin may he rest in peace 😇🙏
A very soothing song I have always enjoyed, thank you Shon
all of the sudden i am 10 years old again! the back roads of North Carolina has a story to tell! thanks man!
I LOVE John Denver's music!! He was such a gifted singer/song writer and musician. I grew up listening to his music and this is one of the first songs I learned to sing. Be sure and check out "Rocky Mountain High" and "Calypso" and check out his live concert videos. Thanks Shon!!
I am in Michigan but when I go visit my oldest daughter in North Carolina and pass through West Virginia- this is always immediately played & sung loudly!😊
.... WEST VIRGINIA, MOUNTAIN MAMA, TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS... SANG IT LOUD!!!!
I will say, I am not from West Virginia, from Virginia. I grew up in a coastal community on the Chesapeake bay. All my tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, that song reminded me of coming home.
It's such an inviting song. Pulls you right in.
Such a beautiful song, sung with real love.
Just a perfect song. Dude was a class act. John stood up for the Metalheads before Congress in the 80s against Al & Tipper Gore and the PMRC.
This song was actually written in Montgomery county Maryland. The thought came to John Denver on a then country road called clopper road. It went from md to west VA.
i saw a West Virginia football game, and the entire stadium sang this...was Awesome
Denver Gold…never old. Great reaction!
Always had a buddy or brother that could play this song, I have sang this song in Saudi, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, and a few others........
I needed this you just don't know how much❤❤❤❤
There is a version called forever country where many current singers all sing this song together
Yes! Here in WV watching!
We play this song at
West Virginia University
after every home football win!
Nice one man!!!!
This man was a huge talent. Some of my favorites from him are with the Muppets, and you should check it out, but some other songs you might like are "Thank God I'm a Country Boy", "Annies Song", "Leaving on a Jet Plane".
My great aunt's favourite song, she loved this
Finally something groovy thank you❤❤❤❤❤❤
We played this song at my mother's memorial back in November. John Denver was one of her favorites along with Simon and Garfunkel.
Played at my wife's also she was born and died in wv
You really caught the spirit of this song. :) This is music you feel in your soul.
A video is out of a teacher playing this for her class, and the kids already know the song and start singing along with it. Myself I'm from the New River Valley. I the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
One of my favorites as a child. John Denver truly amazing. Nice reaction, Shon!
I go to school in the middle of a cornfield in Indiana, this song plays at halftime at every home football game 😂
Great song a true Classic.
The state of West Virginia has adopted this as their state song.
This will always be the classic but the a cappella group Home Free created a terrific cover of this song.
West Virginia........where anything can happen, such as seeing a man ride a horse through the drive thru at McDonald's and seeing a giraffe in a horse trailer on the WV Turnpike. Great song.
Damn, Shon, you always put a smile on my face! John Denver is one of my top 5 all-time favorite artists across all genres. The feeling you describe about nostalgia and wanting to sing along is prevalent throughout pretty much every John Denver song. I see many suggestions for other songs below, and you can't go wrong with this guy, but don't overlook the song Thank God I'm a Country Boy. It's a different side of the artist, is not as serious as most of his songs and is a LOT of fun. Peace out, bud, and keep up the great work. Be patient ... you will get to 100,000 and beyond.
Smiling Faces by the Undisputed Truth
It's one of those songs you can't help singing along to, West Virginian or not!
He had great songs
I was born in 1970. My mom had this album on an 8-track! Check out his song, "Calypso", I remember that from elementary school.
Blessings to you and yours from West Virginia, Montani Semper Liberi 🤠
I live in wv the kids are singing this song for there 5th grade graduation love this song
LOVE this song so much !
I love John Denver and I can see you loved this song! May I suggest "Rocky Mountain High" as a follow-up! He has many great songs, a fun one is "Grandma's Feather Bed". You have probably heard these suggestions and many more by now! Journey on my young friend! ♥
Gotta play Rocky Mountain High! Always relatable whether you've been there or not.
I was raised in the Great smokie mountains. It's home
May very well be the only song wherein someone says they belong in W.Virginia. Also, somewhat interestingly enough, it was the only westernized (non-Chinese) song allowed to be played over the airwaves in mainland China for a number of years. How & where J.D. found out about that is really amusing...
