    I have recently bought and tested over a dozen cheap and expensive button compasses. They ALL have issues - mainly they are not accurate enough or they are useless at night. Therefore, I have concluded that the best 'survival' or back-up compass is a spare lightweight compass. These (as long as they are a quality compass such as a Silva with luminous features) are both accurate and night navigation compatible. The lightweight Silva compass is not heavy and being almost flat does not take up a lot of space. If necessary - tape it to the outside of your survival tin.
    This method described in the video would work - and as a British Infantry soldier I learned similar methods
    However, it is complicated and very slow. Imagine carrying out that process if you are tired, cold, wet, hungry, injured. in the dark or being pursued.
    Knowing your location/direction of travel is SO important that a compromise in this area is not a risk I would take. Do not trust your life to a $2 compass. Buy a good spare.
    PS I trained with Rangers (at Fort Lewis) and have the greatest of respect for their skills.

      Did you ever encounter bear in the Ft. Lewis woods? I tried to walk once solo from old McChord to Ft. Lewis through timber & did not meet bruin. I should have carried a compass. Did find some MP's on patrol, though. Actually, they found me. Thought I was testing them, I believe. I was, but friendly. They told me I was lucky I did not meet a bear. I WAS lucky. Lots of field cam out there, obviously. After all, it is all a strategic military installation, where the trees have eyes & ears, & just look like ordinary timber. I carry now everywhere as a level 1 kit my small Silva compass with a Bear Grylls Gerber mini tool in a flat can, with water bags, fire starter, water purification tabs, & a snack.

    Pretty in-depth alternative if you're without a regular compass. I like button compasses despite the negative press they get. My reason to carry one is to confirm the direction of a standard compass, giving the adventurer an extra bit of confidence they are going in the right direction.

    I have a Brunton Map Compass around my neck and use it every time I get off trail to find my way back. When I get off trail to stealth camp or poop, point the compass in the direction I am heading off trail, rotate dial & put "Red in the Shed", that compass is set, only takes a second and my return direction is 180 degrees from that setting. People get lost when they get off trail in heavy foliage, since the trails aren't straight lines just 5 degrees off and they can miss trail completely, keep wandering and get totally lost. That is when people pull out their button compass and guess what, they are still lost, need to take reading BEFORE they get off trail.

  • @darylsarbaugh3491
    @darylsarbaugh3491 9 місяців тому

    After carrying a button compass on my wrist and a protractor in my PC for over 30 years, I now know how to use them together. Still gotta orient the map accounting for declination angle. The method of getting the azimuth lines on the paper is genious.
    I never go anywhere without a 7.5" map of the AO. The problem I faced early on were: 1. No UTM/MGRS lines, only ticks on the edges. So you have to make your own lines. 2. Military protractor doesn't have 1:24,000. 3. Converting between UTM and LON/LAT. 4. Learning how to plot LON/ LAT.
    I love UTM because you only need to see a small part of the map to plot points and it is easy to guesstimate points by eye to 6 digits. LAT is easy but LON takes half the map to plot. And guessing is sure to get you misoriented.

    Really good video.Thats something anybody can use if lost or needing navigation.
    I would like to learn how to accurately follow the stars for navigation.That was something my ancestors knew very well.The only problem being if it's not clear enough at night to see them.
    My dad's ancestors in 1864 had to sail the ship they were on because the captain went nuts,around the horn of South America.They did it strictly on star navigation,they had no other form of navigation.
