Apparently there was a Rygar 2 that came out on PlayStation 2. At a glance it looks like a poor man's God of War, but the reviews are all fairly positive. Anyone have any experience with it?

      It's not Rygar 2 actually.
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure was a remake combining elements from the arcade game and NES game.
I still have my copy of that version.
      I love that game.
There's yet another remake on the Wii that has a crazy aesthetic.
I highly recommend looking it up on UA-cam.

Based upon the reviews, and the fact that it predates God of War, "Rygar: The Legendary Adventure" seems to be copying Devil May Cry and Onimusha. (Sounds more like it's copying Hercules). Reviewers didn't hate the game, but it obviously wasn't very popular.
There's also a Wii port named "Rygar: The Battle of Argus", which has much worse reviews, but that makes sense because it's the same game 7 years later without modern improvements and God of War was four years old so it was a really poor man's God of War. As IGN said: "It may have been pretty cool at the time, but by today's standards Rygar is dull, with horrendous dialogue and a mixed bag of visuals."

Rygar was, and remains, my favorite NES game and one of my top 5 of all time, for all the reasons you listed. Something I thought was a very nice touch, the sound designer opted to not have any boss music for the boss fights, instead using the track for an INSANELY GOOD monster roar that was both intimidating and unique. Plus, the music for the Tower of Garba has to be the best 8-bit metal track ever made!

I remember a friend of mine having this game as a kid, and we enjoyed playing it, although it being in English and we not being from an English speaking country, we didn't know very well what to do. Good memories, still.
I recently played the Japanese version, "Argos no Senshi" (which translates to "Warrior of Argos") and one of the most noticeable changes other than the language is that the BGM is completely different. While the western release had an almost Superman-like tune, the Japanese version had a more melancholic, yet heroic, music.
All in all, I think this is a solid and fun game.

I remember being pleasantly surprised when I played Argos No Senshi, the music seemed to be more fitting for the quest Rygar was on.

A remake of the NES version of "Rygar" would be awesome. I don't mean any of the fan projects, I just mean a full remake. It was a pretty good 80's game, although you can tell it really wasn't properly finished. Seriously, it was pretty obvious.

There is another Rygar easter egg in Tecmo's "Secret of the Stars" RPG for SNES. One of the characters can get a rare drop weapon from a certain enemy called the "DISCARMR."

Thanks! This video brought back a lot of good memories. We didn’t own Rygar, but my best friend had it; so I borrowed it often. The no saves actually added to the game in my opinion, as then you had to find a way to pause it yet keep it running (with the TV off), so that when mom kicked everyone outside, we weren’t starting over. Seeing that two-headed bear turtle boss made me smile, thanks again.

Thanks for covering one of the greatest games ever made that never got the recognition it deserved due to not having a password feature. Growing up this was and still is my favorite game of all time. You were mistaken about the last boss Ligar and where the fight takes place because the Palace of Dorago is where you fight the creature who the palace is named after while the final fight takes place in the floating castle which is high above the skies of Rolsa. Just keep climbing those green towers until you see it and once you get to the top just blow the flute that you get from the Tower of Garba

One of my faves as a kid (and as an adult!). I still play a couple times a year, and can now beat it in about 50 minutes. Also my favorite NES music along with Metroid. Check out the original Japanese version, and you’ll hear the music is completely different, and not for the better.

This was the 2nd game ever beat (Trojan was the first and deserves a video!). I used to leave the NES on all night sometimes for days at a time. A you mentioned the music is epic and one of my fav parts of the game it really makes you feel like something epic is afoot. Just an amazing game and later in life when I discovered emulators it was the first from my childhood I revisited. You don't want to miss this one! Grab a Nintendo Power with the maps if short on time and strap in for a memorable experience!

With that info, I beat the game in one afternoon. Great game!

Probably my top interesting factoid about this game is that all of its music uses only two voices (out of a potential 4, not counting digital which was mostly ignored for music in those early NES days). Which in turn means that the overland theme is probably the best two-voice tune I know of.
The reason they kept music down to two voices was to make room for the sound effects, which in turn limit themselves to the two unused voices and are constantly playing.

I loved exploratory style NES games like this back then, and this one avoided a lot of the pitfalls that made some of its contemporaries so tedious at times. No currency grinding like in Simon's Quest, no weak first-person segments like Goonies II. It kept to the basics like Zelda and Metroid did: Explore, fight monsters, and find items.

Great game. I played it two years ago on original European hardware (it's worth mentioning that, for some reason, the PAL version of the game is harder and you have less health, which makes the final boss a pain). It's a very ambitious and intersting game, and how can you not love that sunset? However, one of the most frustrating things was using the ropes in the top-down sections, to reach another area. I found it hard sometimes to jugde distances and avoid falling in the water.

Rygar, Adventure of Link, and Mega Man 2 were my favorites back in the NES days. Rygar and to a lesser extent Trojan were actually the reasons (Not Mario) I got a NES after playing them at a friend's house. Wish they would do a faithful re-master one day.

Played this extensively when I was a boy. The game is a bit glitchy in spots but the mood and gameplay suck you in somehow. This reminds me of Bionic Commando on the NES... a lot better home version than the arcade... both were way deeper gameplay than I expected from an 8 bit title. Fond memories of this game in my basement surrounded by video game posters from Nintendo power, EGM and Gamepro.

I already talked about how the first time I beat this game it crashed on me in another video, so I won't repeat that story here. But I will point out that the game was good enough that I felt it was worthwhile to play through it again to see the ending, so that's saying a lot in it's favor. I remember it was my cousins who introduced me to this game, and I was instantly hooked. Just challenging enough to ten year old me that I wanted to stick with it to see how far I could get. For it's time the graphics, sound, and overall gameplay were top-notch, and it's still a great nostalgia game today. Fun fact: if you let the music play for a while when you enter the second area of the game, it has this one part that sounds a lot like Brahms Lullaby!

It would have been three days, but I got home from school day three and found my console power light flashing. The one thing I strongly dislike regarding arcade ports to both NES and SNES is when the game is not the arcade game. Personally, one of the best ports of the original arcade game is on the Atari Lynx. The sounds and movement are so good. I was eager when I saw a screen shot of the NES version, but backed away when I saw they made this game into a Zelda 2ish title?

The PAL version is notoriously harder due to a few bugs and the max stats being 1023 instead of the actual cap of 4095, including the final boss Lygar (Being affected by the coding bug).

My story is this was in one of my rental stores but I never rented it. I mean who could pass up renting the first Mega Man game?

Drives me crazy when you have to keep ducking in order to hit enemies.

This game actually looks like it would still be really fun to play today, even for a darn whippersnapper like me lol. I'm gonna try and see if there are any speedruns of it!

If Rygar on the nes had a save feature it would have been far more popular.

The Official Nintendo Player's Guide had a full walkthrough of this game. So I kinda beat it day 1.

It may be hard on first try, but it wasn't really meant to be played to 'see the end on first try'. Overall, if you play the game enough, it's possible to zip through the game in about 45 minutes to an hour.
