Snuffing the Stafford Gambit | Busting the Gambits with GM Naro

  • In this video - the first of a series - I offer a detailed analysis of the Stafford Gambit, an opening variation for Black that has become immensely popular in the last few months. I show how White can accept and keep the sacrificed pawn, rebuffing all of Black's attempts to create counterplay and keeping Black's possibility for tricks to a minimum.
    - A summary of my proposed refutation can be found starting at 23:50.
    - One of IM Eric Rosen's many fantastic videos on the Stafford, in which he carefully reviews many of Black's traps, can be found here: • The Trappiest Opening ...

Just checking in on this video after a year to say this repertoire is great. Since studying this video I'm frequently completely winning right out of the opening against stafford players, and it usually feels like my opponent has sacked a pawn to give ME positional compensation and a time advantage. I ended up absolutely CRUSHING him and even trapped his queen! 99.7% accuracy! I was so stoked, never had a better feeling in chess. Although my opponent clearly didn't quite understand the tactics behind this tricky gambit, it was so satisfying being able to simply dismantle his every move. The Stafford gambit always seemed easy for me to defend against, but lately people my skill level have been truly studying up on it, so I finally got tired and looked up the vid. I was proud that I just beat my opponent who tried the Stafford against me, I knew I was playing against the Stafford but I didn't know the theory. I was pleased after the game to see my first several moves were the best, until I blundered Bg5, and I saw Nxe4 Bxf2+ but I didn't see the Bg5# at the end so I thought it was unsound. I guess my opponent saw what I did too, and didn't go for it. Now I know. Thanks

The irony here is at 17:05 (7...Ng4 8. d4) you will now fall into the newest Stafford line (8...Qh4 9. g6 Qf6) which stockfish overestimates by a huge margin. You need Lc0 or similar to get a true measure with some lines where you need to play only moves.
