- In this video, we watch a Japanese Master Carpenter, Daian-san (ダイアンさん) set up the Hammer (Hoop) Ring or Katsura (桂) on a new Japanese Chisel (鑿). He really simplifies the process and does it quickly.
Some books and videos show different tools needed and techniques required, but as you can see from this video you really only need the chisel, a hammer, and a round file.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to do this if you are not confident or can maintain control of the chisel. Always keep the chisel's blade away from you and others when hammering on the handle and ring.

I have been doing this exactly for some time while feeling guilty about not doing it the youtube way; I assumed this fast way was wrong. Thank you for setting me free.
Haruyuki-san is a great expert! 😄
Can you do a feature about the clothing worn by the Master Carpenter?
Exactly correct. As you tap the end in use, the wood fibers will spread apart and force the katsura to slide down the handle. I would go so far as to slightly file the bottom opening to help that along.
I would so have smacked my hands with the hammer. 😮
Hahaha
Watching several such type videos, I think a key is that the Japanese use the right hammer for the job. The hammer this gentleman used was not that large, so it is much easier to control direction and force. Still, it is a good size hammer.
Man thanks for enlightening me! I’ve done this setting the UA-cam way on several sets, but just did this on a new set. 15 minutes for 6 chisels. Oh my so much easier 💪💪💪💪
