  • The things you will need to do to your new Japanese chisel to get it set up and ready for sharpening. They don't come ready to use, here is how I do it. There are surly many variations but this has worked well for me. Timestamps below.
    1:53 - Removing the hoops
    3:47 - Removing protective coating
    5:43 - Preparing the hoops
    8:05 - Setting the hoops
    10:39 - Mushrooming the end

Thank you. These basic tool videos -- power and hand -- are extremely helpful for those of us just learning.

Thank you, very thorough and clear. You tell why to do it this way - or you will or won't get result you want. Basic cause/effect of Japanese chisel set up. Thank you.

Hello. I would appreciate your thoughts on "fixing" a Japanese chisel where the hoop is to loose and slides quite far down the handle. My first instinct is to remove the hoop and soak the handle in warm water swelling the wood fibres, but I wonder if they will just "re-shrink" when they dry and I'll still have a loose hoop. Another possibility might, of coarse be to cut the handle down in length and seating the hoop on a thicker section of the handle, but then that might change the balance of the chisel. ( this is a good, but not "great" chisel.) Any insights would be helpful.

Best chisels on earth? Whilst I do use quite a lot of japanese chisels I still think that it's debatable.

Sorry, did you soak the chisel handles in lacquer or a solvent to remove the lacquer that was already there?
