Billboard Magazine was at 9000 Sunset Los Angeles California. My uncle Peter was director of advertising sales for Billboard Magazine. Billboard had the top floor, Don Kirshner's Rock concert had the floor below Billboard. Sammy Davis jr. Had the floor below that. My uncle wanted to introduce me to Sammy, so we got off on his floor, but Sammy wasn't there. So I never got to meet him. But my uncle told me Sammy was a nice man. I'm sorry to hear about the lack of grace concerning his passing. Sammy was a National Treasure and he should have been treated him with more respect. Thank you Sammy for being such a professional, for being a great Entertainer. I'm sorry I missed you. Godspeed.

Hold on, the reason why Sammy didnt get paid as much as Frank and Liza is because he knew that the IRS would take ALL of his profit. So the bulk of the cash went to Frank who could give it back to Sammy under the table.
yes i think you know more about this than this guy telling us what happened , he has no facts , and seems like hes makin this shit up , in order to write his stupid book !
Met Sammy 80s in the Dunes Diamond shop... Armed private guard...Sammy looked and smiled broadly and my daughter and I. Looked relieved we would not ask the usual questions, etc. A gentle spirit I saw..
There is nothing tragic about it, once he died none of this affected him. Do you get to see the greed in people in situations like this? Of course, that has always been that way and will always be that way until the end.
If Sammy was born white he would have ended richer than Bennett or Sinatra or Presley. There was certainly no more talented showman than him during the 20 century. RIP Sammy.
The same thing happened to Richard Pryor ,they walked right passed him in his wheelchair,he had m.s.,and just took what they wanted,so called friends,I actually forgot who wrote about it.
A true story that involves Sammy Davis Jr. Frank Sammy and Dean were coming out of the Sands Hotel and Casino. Frank said to the vale to go and get his car. The Vale brought his car back to Frank. Frank proceeded to ask the vale what was the biggest tip he had ever gotten. The Vale said $500. Frank peeled off a grand and handed it to the Vale. Then Frank ask if the Vale remembered who had tipped him $500. He said "It was you Mr Sinatra" Dean and Sammy fell to the ground laughing and Frank said "I don't believe it. . .I have been out tipped by myself" I met the Vale when I worked in Vegas and he told me that story. . .
I hope it is not true about Frank Sinatra getting "the lions share of the proceeds and Sammy getting a basic contract rate to perform." I just don't want to believe that. And the wife gives Sammy's eye to an attorney friend. What the hell does someone want with something like that?!!! How gruesomely morbid. That sounds like a tale.
I'm saddened that before & after his passing that those he thought he could trust, those close to him would turn into such vultures knowing he would eventually expire & that his assets would inevitably be owed to the IRS 😥
Sammy was one of the greatest showman back then. He could sing, dance/tap & play piano. He was humorous & laughed at racism. He's a legend that deserved more credence.

If he owed money to the IRS then presumably his relatives, if they wanted his property without the authorities getting it , would have to first of all get it out of the US where it could be impounded .The same goes for any earnings, so it is not surprising that his friends only paid him the basic contract fee as if they gave him all of the money it would be taken off him.I am not saying it was right to tax dodge only that seems to be what they were doing.
I would like to believe that people were doing him a favor by taking things from him only to repay Sammy under the table, and out of the IRS's radar. But his stuff started disappearing only after his cancer went public as terminal. And not before, even when Sammy's money troubles were pretty well known.

Years ago, a photographer friend of mine asked me to come along on a photo shoot to the Carlton I think it was, for a benefit to raise money for H.E.A.R.T. People back stage ran to talk with him, as well as my friend and myself. We were last in line, and I could clearly see how tired Sammy was..... I felt bad..... I told my friend, in a whisper "We're not going to get to see him." He herd me, and told somebody " I want to see these two in my dressing room right now." Wow!!! I didn't know what to say other that the usual "I think you're wonderful, and I named my cat after you....." I didn't want to tax him anymore than that, plus I realized I didn't really have much more to tell him and it would be selfish of me to .... try to get more time with this great talent who was clearly deserving of his quiet, rest, alone time. -Thank you Sammy, for giving a Bloomington, Minnesota, sweed, the time of your day. I was fortunate to hear Sammy perform live on the Robert Q. Lewis show accompanied by organist George Wright singing the song "The Candy Man" at it's release. Frank Sinatra must not have been a good friend to Sammy as we all thought. How could he see Sammy in his financial situation and yet he took a lion share of the Profit from the tour. Frank was already wealthy. Did he need the lion share as well. Let me guess...Frank excuse was probably...he didn't know he got the lion share because he had his managers working out the details of his contract. Ok....sure.
You need to scroll down and read a comment from Kat Slat, where she says that Frank knew that Sammy owed a lot of money to IRS, so taking the lion's share of the profits from the tour meant that the IRS could not take much of it in back taxes. Frank could then give it to Sammy under the table. It was Frank who paid Sammy's medical bills when he was in the car accident that cost him his eye, and he helped Sammy get back on his feet after that. You honestly think that with all that, Frank was taking all the money to line his own pocket?

+Lynette Rodgers It goes to show you can,t trust anyone when it comes to money,if they were his friends then all you can say is what a load of scum bags, they want exposing and lock them all up,it makes you want to throw up.
It comes from thinking that you had to buy people's love friendship and loyalty. Davis was notorious for giving away gifts that he couldn't afford. He lived his entire life trying to emulate Frank Sinatra.
It can happen very easily by spending all ones money and not putting aside any money needed to pay taxes. Add to that any event where you can't work, and voila, you can't pay your taxes and you have to sell assets like your car, jewellery, house. It's a devastating situation.

Wow, the thing he was most afraid of, ending up like Mr Bojangles and he was so close to being that way.
If he had lived a few years longer, he would have.
Pretty sure that
Frank and Dino would have somehow taken care of him.
That amazing talented guy, shat on time and time again. Shame on every single person that stole !!!! From a genius . Money hungry BASTARDS

That’s what happens when you make a lots and lots of money and do not manage it correctly.
I also read during that time Sinatra paid for Sammy's funeral expenses...if there is anything Sinatra wasn't was greedy. He earned tremendous fees and gave away most if it to others.
This sounds strange. All his life Sinatra is reported having helped total strangers, why shouldn't he help him? I think we're missing the big picture.
@@lilise3965 Hmm good question.
@@82luft49 I've read somewhere it might have to do with Sammy David Jr. owing the Tax Office. They probably gave him his due but had to figure it was less, otherwise the Tax Office would have reclaimed the bigger chunk of it.
That's nice, but after all Sammy did to help plan Kennedy's Inaugural, Sinatra told Sammy not to show up. He felt Sammy's presence & performing would aggravate the white Southern
"Dixiecrats."
Except paying Sammy while Sammy was alive to use the money.
I HAVE SEEN MR DAVIS DOZENS OF TIMES. I WAS ONE OF 500 PEOPLE THAT SAW HIS LAST PERFORMENCE AT THE FRONT ROW IN CLEVELAND OH. HE PASSED A FEW WEEKS LATER. HE DID ONE HOUR MORE THAN HIS OTHER SHOWS FOR US. THIS MAN SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THREE TIMES THE PAY THAT HE GOT. SANATRA HAD ABSOLUTLY NO TALANT NEXT TO MR DAVIS. Sammy once said every time he sings bojangles he fears he will end the same way. His biggest fear. That's why he couldn't risk not singing.

sammys so under rated
I will always remember the incredible strength and range of his singing voice.

Godspeed.
They even took his glass eye .
3 hours after death he was smoking.
Sir David
Greetings.

Archie Bunker said, do you take cream and sugar with that eye LOL
Prolly worth good money to the right collector. No? Still wrong and creepy as hell tho.
Somehow I can see Sammy saying, "Just take it"when he knew the end was near.
Idk what people say Sammy will always be a legendary icon it’s a major loss when we lose them we must keep their memory alive I love living in Vegas because this is the heart of these icons I’m just sayin
Altovise was his wife, why shouldn't she have right's to his possessions? She was virtually homeless and in debt after Sammy Davis Jr.s death. Well at least from what I've read and heard from reliable sources. Sad. He was truly a legendary entertainer. So gifted and talented. Rest in peace
Matt wrote a wonderful book. Knowing all those people well for many years I am not surprised.
Very sad ending for my dear Sammy.
Hold on, the reason why Sammy didnt get paid as much as Frank and Liza is because he knew that the IRS would take ALL of his profit. So the bulk of the cash went to Frank who could give it back to Sammy under the table.
GREAT POINT!!
yes i think you know more about this than this guy telling us what happened , he has no facts , and seems like hes makin this shit up , in order to write his stupid book !
Only they were doing it to him when he was alive, mr "Oooooo look at me i'm really edgy"
That's terrible!
He said "It was you Mr Sinatra" Dean and Sammy fell to the ground laughing and Frank said "I don't believe it. . .I have been out tipped by myself" I met the Vale when I worked in Vegas and he told me that story. . .
So so sad.looting hes house while he was dying in hospital.and hes ex wife took hes glass eye.now how low can you go.
Rest in peace sammy.
If he was cremated his eye had to come out anyway. Could of put it in the urn with his ashes.
Why you think lawyers are called SHYSTERS.
It does sound like some of this is less than straight up
Sinatra gave him the money on the side.
What happened to those Sammy jewels? I saw the Ultimate Event on 28 Feb 1989. Fabulous Sammy!
They took those first

I'm saddened that before & after his passing that those he thought he could trust, those close to him would turn into such vultures knowing he would eventually expire & that his assets would inevitably be owed to the IRS 😥
Sammy, a truly Great Entertainer...
1:28 he never wanted to turn into mr bojangles, even it meant he'd have a higher chance of living longer
Sammy was one of the greatest showman back then. He could sing, dance/tap & play piano. He was humorous & laughed at racism. He's a legend that deserved more credence.
People with an 'entourage' .. need to be loved. And this is the price they pay for that temporary fix. Very sad.
@kjr291 Exactly what I was thinking. And besides you cannot steal from yourself. Altovise was his wife she could take what she wanted. Those other people not!
Coily Queensrock she tried to hide stuff from the IRS Sammy did this lady so wrong he even admitted to not loving her it's a good book about a tragic man
Heartless People you think are family and friends rob you blind. Sammy you were a loving soul and a great entertainer that had wolves around you. Shame follows all the one that deceived you.... God Bless you forever in our Hearts..RIP Sammy Davis
@@elevationnnnnn well he could still perform before the cancer but not after so it makes sense they would step in when it was clear he wasn't going to make it
His wife was a trip, took his glass eye,It's obvious he didn't see the train wreck coming.Friends like these you don't need enemies.
If I had been Sammy and knew it's over I would have sold it all and sold the house and just live as long as I could. I wouldn't just let vultures steal it.
My dad died from lung cancer 3 packs a day! We were robbed of our inheritance while making funeral arrangements. They even took his food
When, your married, everything is hers. Only if had he left a will. Then, stealing comes into play.
It was hers so it wasn't stealing...IRS was going to steal it!!

It's not how much you make, it's what you do with what you make.
She took his EYE?? There are no words!!!
Better them take it than the irs... Did they give it to the kids?
Yup
Oh for heavens sake. Sammy couldn't take it with him. He was heavily in debt. Owed the IRS millions. It was all going to be auctioned off to pay off these debts anyway. In reality, Sammy would probably be glad friends and relatives got the stuff rather than the IRS.
Karen Koe if he was so happy about it why didn't they just ask him for the stuff instead of Stealing it from him when he was sick with throat cancer down and out ? Real friends don't do that
True.
were you born stupid?
Karen Koe
Thanks 4 that take on the situation.
Yeah, but he worked his ass of to get that money 53 years, but you have to remember Sammy was also sending his dad a fat cut of the money he was making doing shows.Sammy also had a huge spending issue as well,he could not for the life of him ,save any money. He was a shopaholic.I feel bad for his legacy though,he had two kids he couldn't leave anything too.His staff had no right to touch anything without his permission, neither did his so called wife. Not to speak I'll of the dead, that Frank Sinatra was something else,.............
In the end he died just 8 years before Frank, we have lost so many brilliant singers.
No body knows for whom he works, when you’re dead everybody changes to vultures!
Sammy couldn't take it with him but his thieving family and "friends" surely could... and did.
His wife took so the IRS couldn't get. Can't say as I blame her he pissed a lot of money away on drugs and parties,.
So sad these s..m bags would steal from him and he thought they were his friends. People could be worse than animals when it comes to showing there true colors! RIP Sammy
Damn, "she took his glass eye". Well if this is all true, it reminds me of the saying: He/she who has many friends, has NO friends.

OK! So if I follow this.............the IRS takes the house when he dies because he's so in debt? Right? So why the Hell NOT have your friends take what ever they could? Why would they leave it for the F--king IRS?
Sammy had an insurance policy that paid out to his kids. The last thing he could do for his family.
Sammy Davis Jr was literally “the fastest gun in the west.” He was a quick draw artist. He could draw, shoot and hit a target in about 0.4 seconds.

Years ago, a photographer friend of mine asked me to come along on a photo shoot to the Carlton I think it was, for a benefit to raise money for H.E.A.R.T. An organization that helped people with recovery from addictions. Sammy was the feature. We watched Sammy from behind the stage. It was such a very big thrilling!!! At the conclusion of his performance, Sammy said to G. W., man you are the greatest. Sammy and George had performed at the N. Y. Paramount in the 1940's.

RIP, Sammy.
When my Grandmother died, my Mom could only stand in horror and watch the family descend on her tiny farmhouse and throw everything out on to the lawn to be picked over. Mom managed to get for us a picture of Grandma and Grandpa standing on a Southern Colorado dirt road, next to his new Model T Ford, when they had just been married, embracing, smiling, ready to face the world. She had copies made for all five of us kids so we would remember how beautiful they were. Grandma did not deserve her home being torn up. She had very little. She didn't need much. But they did it anyway. That's why I have never and will never speak to any of them again, They are monsters. And Grandma is an Angel. And now so is Mom.
I read that book ; Truths were told; The people closest to him hurt him the most; then-wife Altovise and her henchmen ; his musical conductor George and his wife, and many many people close to Mr. Davis who he trusted.
It’s a horrible sad miserable rotten way that they treated this great man as he lay dying 😡😡😡😡😩😩😩😩😩😩

Mr.Davis was an Extraordinary man as far as I've seen&heard. He didn't let fame&fortune go to his head, just a wonderful human being.Men as well as Entertainers like him only come around once in a lifetime.

This is typical. I have leukemia and a dear gentleman from Binghamton, New York was dying with his cancer. While he and I were on the telephone his two daughters came in and were taking his things. I believe that it was instigated by his ex-wife. At any rate, it hurts me to this day to hear him say, where are you going with that and I am your father. How was SDJ in debt? He had a long career and very rich friends. How does this happen?
Lynette Rodgers cocaine that's how
