I worked at Tesla starting in July of 2017 as an Operations Analyst out of the Bethlehem, PA distribution center facility and left as a Program Manager based out of Austin, TX as of September 2021. I spent most of my time in the distribution and supply chain organizations.
Before Tesla, I was a Director of Business Intelligence and Pricing at the largest Pet Food & Supply distributor in the US, Phillips Pet Food & Supplies based out of Easton, PA. My wife and I also owned a small business in Bethlehem, PA between 2016 and 2019.
I have been a shareholder of Tesla since 2012 and currently own Tesla stock. Nothing I say constitutes as investment or financial advice.

Two completely different purposes mate.
When your desire is for the world to be a better place, you don't let politics guide the way. Elon is pretty a transparent negotiator, he's all about advancing the EV and Tesla's position in the world, not about optics or political agenda's. In the end, selling more cars is good business for a car company, he knows being accommodative is the key to doing business in the East. If you go balls to walls in China you'll just end up with blue balls!

I think a big reason for that was to reschedule the trip after India's election which conclude on June 1st. Why meet with the leader(s) of India shortly before an election in which governmental positions are likely to change?
I think it was done because Tesla had too many hands in the fire at the time. Personally, I believe India hasn't sweetened the pot enough yet for Tesla to make a significant investment. It is a vast car market ripe for the taking, but require foreign car companies to invest half a billion or more but caps production of EV's to a pittance; not making said investment very worthwhile presently. According to India’s new policy, automakers that invest at least $500 million and set up manufacturing facilities in India within three years, will be eligible to import up to 8,000 EVs that cost $35,000 or more a year, at a lower tax rate. Not very compelling number for Tesla who wants to sell millions of vehicles in a country of nearly 1.5 billion people.

This is not really shocking to me, Tesla has some up and downs in China, but both Tesla and Elon Musk himself are quite welcomed in the country.

Elon Musk has the ability to relate to Chinese people and this creates trust and good personal relationship. Tesla is the first foreign company to set up in China without a local partnership. Tesla owes much of its initial success to the Shanghai gigafactory which was built and and running in less than a year from breaking ground.

@@presimirmikic9016 Namely 2 or 3. But try and quantify the number of accidents it prevented. (very hard to do) But a good metric is to compare it with normal human driver fatality. And it's already much safer. Also, the responsibility for those deaths were on the driver's end, falling asleep, drunk, or not paying attention. Lastly, FSD has no death recorded as of yet. Meanwhile, many people still die on the road today by manually driving vehicles.

They will try. But Tesla gets the better deal - production of Teslas at 25% less than in America or Europe.
Tesla grows and innovates faster than others. If you copy them, you are always behind... Plus, Tesla opens all its patents to competitors so that they can help in the mission of Tesla which is to speed up the transition to renewable energy.
When other EV makers succeed, that is also a success for Tesla's mission, which it has promised to its shareholders since the start. So it is the legal duty of Tesla executives to not focus on maximizing profits and to help other companies...
I assume that some form of technology transfer is part of the deal. Since Tesla's mission is to accelerate the world's transition to a sustainable future and china is the leader in batteries and renewable power generation it probably isn't seen as a conflict.

I have a different take. China understands we discouraged expanding there and it was effecting their economy. The concept of bringing manufacturing jobs back onshore scared China into altering their foreign policy. It's less military and more let's cooperate together as this soundbite signifies. I think it's wise to encourage cooperation but keep a skeptical mindset as China helps Russia and still intimidates its neighbors like the Philippines.
Elon scrubs up well when he has to. We even saw a good measure of it on the Q1 conference call.
