Hi Mike, great video! Am thinking of getting a Mini ONE which has a 1.5 102bhp engine but am concerned by what you suggest in this video that the three cylinder engines are/were less reliable than the four cylinder counterparts? Is this the case? I got the impression that you are suggesting only the four cylinder engines, even in their updated form (from 2016 onwards), are more reliable and stable than the three cylinder ones and this concerns me because the ONE, for sure, which is more affordable and has a less sporty suspension, and is cheaper to insure, comes with a three cylinder engine. Would not want to invest over 16k only to find it started developing problems thanks to it being a smaller engine! I also wonder if Mini overcame the issues that plagued many owners with the ECU and power steering; oil starvation and timing belt problems. Your thoughts on this one most welcome!
i own and drive (everyday) a 3 cyl 2021 cooper 136hp model, no issues. (period). Very frugal, very reliable (google it) and plenty of power. Tis engine is also provided in the Bmw 3 series, and has been in the hood of 1 series for a long time - not to mention the Bmw e8). I don't know of any serious complaint about the B38 engine from anybody i know in Europe whatsoever (and i know a lot of mini and Bmw owners). I don't know of anybody that had a serious reliability issue on those after the early years 2013 to 2015 (the 1.6 and 2.0 of the mk2 (before 2013) where somewhat troublesome, this ones are not, across the lineup). Most of the new gasoline engines (in Europe) are 3cyl - honda and Ford have a 1.0L award winning 3 Cyl - and the bmw 1.5L 3 Cyl was also awarded one of the best in 2014 - again: google it). Hello everyone! Hey Mike! I am looking to purchase a car next year and I was debating between Mazda3 turbo hatchback or Honda Civic Turbo 2022. But then I saw the Mini Cooper S 2022 and fell in love with it again 😍!!! I forgot about the Mini Cooper S, it was actually my dream car many years ago. My question is, is the new Mini Cooper S a reliable car in the long run? Will it last as long as the competitors (Honda Civic Turbo, Mazda3 Turbo)?? I wonder about the reliability of the newer and newest models.
Hello Mike, I'm thinking of purchasing a new 2024, 4 door, Mini Cooper S, 4 cylinder automatic. I went for a test drive loved it, it would have to be ordered and built from Oxford England. ( thats what the salesman told me, from the Los Angeles area) I've never had a Mini. I love how they look but I want a reliable car. I'm an older lady but I'm willing to purchase one. But I want to know if it's gonna be a reliable car for me? Your opinion matters greatly, thank you.
Hello, Yes the S model is the more reliable of the two engine options. MINI will never be as reliable as some Japanese manufacturers. But they are a blast to drive.
Hi mic, i like the video. I jst want to ask . Im planning to buy mini cooper s 2018 with the 71,000 km. To you think think on nice ? This os 3rd gen of mini ? Right.. and fyi im in dubai , this is pre owned car from US i think. Thank you for your comment and suggestion
Hi Mike Happy 2022, I wanted to learn from you, which is more reliable and effective in terms of cost management in terms of lifetime repairs and fuel efficiency between a 4 cylinder base mini cooper second generation 2011 to 2013 and 2014 to 2016 3 cylinder engine. I say so because I want to upgrade to a three cylinder 2014 but am a bit skeptical and I need a bit more information on the 3 cylinder engine reliability. I thank you
Good question. The fuel savings on the new 3 cylinder will not likely make up for the maintenance costs in the long run. The 3 cylinder has proven unreliable. Additionally it is noisy and vibrates to the point of annoyance. Only get the 4 cylinder (S model). A Little less fuel efficiency, more reliable and a whole lot more power.
@@MikeMDs Thanks a lot mate, much appreciated, this guidance has definitely been much helpful. I bought my first mini based off of your guidance from the video on which version of a mini to buy.
I have a 2019 Countryman SE with 3 cylinder engine up front and electric motor in the rear. The 3 cylinder engine is quite smooth. You can barely tell it is running and it sounds great when the turbo kicks in. Also, it is hard to know what to believe. I've actually heard that the 3 cylinders are more reliable than the 4 cylinder models.
My is a base Mini 2013 ? Can you do a video DYI I’ve learn quite a bit from UA-cam after all high like a 2013 because of the review lol of course no pressure ha ha
Hi Mike for the R56 2010 50th anniversary Camden Edition (non-turbo) Auto transmission current 95 Kmiles is it a reliable model to purchase. If I do what should I be looking for and how to I take care of it. Cause after watch your vid I’m still contemplating but always wanted to own one.
Hey Mike, I’m really finding your videos extremely helpful in guiding me to my 2nd Mini. I need to be at 20K out the door. I live in NY and would like a Countryman S. I am looking at 2014 - 2017. How do I find a Mini specialist? And if I can’t, can I depend on pre-certification? I hope you can find time to help me. Gratefully yours
In that case a Certified Pre-Owned dealer would be your best bet. The certification brings the vehicle back to original and addresses any issues. Also it comes with a mechanical warranty. If too expensive then try a used non CPO from the dealers inventory. If not, then you'll have to find a used MINI from a random place and find a specialist to do a pre-purchase inspection for you to make sure it is in good shape. You can also try CAR-MAX. They have good selections and you can purchase their mechanical warranty. One of the best extended aftermarket warranties out there.
I attempted to buy 3 different mini’s. The first 2 were gone before I could put a deposit on one it was sold . Am I making a mistake buying a 2015 Countryman S ALL 4 with 49k from CARMAX? It’s being shipped from VA.. if I did not by it I would only be out ‘$199. Thoughts?
I’ve noticed that it’s seem like when I look at minis 2009 , 2015 ! People & dealer for sale? I almost bought the 15 I’m glad I didn’t because there’s a reason whether for sale
Thank you! Im in the market for a used Countryman manual transmission. So what Im getting here is that for the most reliable options the 2016 S version or higher package same year is the earliest model year to look into. Do you have a favorite year for the used Countryman manual transmission?
I’m planning on buying either the Clubman S or the Countryman S (haven’t decided yet) in the next month or so. From what I’ve found, the Clubman isn’t selling as well as the Countryman. Is that an indication that the Countryman is a better made car or does it simply come down to preference?
I have a chance to get one mini clubman s 2017 with 72000 miles around 13000$. Should I get that? Is it a good deal? No accident btw. Let me know, thanks a lot!
@@MikeMDs Thanks for the reply! How much you will give for a fair price? 12k or 11k? And should I be worried about the engine or turbo due to the high mileage? Let me know, thanks again!
How about buying approved used mini cooper SD DEC 2015 Registered? It comes with a 1-year warranty too and only 20300 miles run with all extras options including Harman speakers and sunroof for 215 per month in a PCP and 2000 deposit. I am not planning on buying so mostly will return in 30 months, and the cost for 30 months comes a total of 8400 pounds only for a car. Is it worth to buy?
Hi Mike I am in the process of buying a 2009 mini Clubman s with 88k miles. What should I look out for so that she won't buy a moneypit mini... Thanks Mike.
Mike, since you are familiar with MINIs...recently the center nut on the rear shock(s) became loose on my 2016 MCS(under warranty) and it introduced clunk. Dealer removed shocks and tightened that nut. 1) Any idea why that nut became loose? 2) Because of the factory torque error or defect in the part? 3) Do you think it is temporary fix and nut may come loose again or not?
@@MikeMDs I see. The bottom bolt was fine as far as I know. The mini dealer was going to replace rear shocks(they ordered from Germany) while they were trying to diagnose clunking noise. Tech just decided to torque/tighten rear suspension bolts/nuts and didn't even know he fixed the issue(maybe temporary solution). Mike, so if you haven't see this nut come loose, but would you say that it shouldn't come loose and it could of been factory error not tightening it properly? My warranty expires November this year and I don't want to nut to come loose after that. I want dealership to replace the rear shocks but looks like they are holding off until sound returns.
Strange things like that can happen, who knows the real story. Maybe some work was done previously or just loose from factory. They are a locking style nut so should be okay. Best of luck
They are doing great things with automatics now as far as shifting speeds and sport programs are concerned. Reliability wise I can't speak for the MINI's as they are too new. As far as the BMW's go, the dual clutch trans are have more issues with higher mileage.
You are correct ha. Out of the first and second gen, I pick the best ( my favorite) amongst them. This is a much newer video . And if money isn't an issue, then the third gen S model. But the second gen S model with the N18 engine may be more attainable. And of course a manual. These are my two favorite. I think the third gen S is more reliable, and the S has more power. But is more money and hard to find in a manual.
Wow, truly appreciate your responding to me. My daughter bought a used 2016 4 Cylinder turbo however, the engine looks similar to the 2015 Model rather than 2016 and up. We are happy with the car. But the pictures don't match. It has 181 hp. Sorry if it is a dumb question. I just want to be sure is truly 2016. Thanks, Mike
Sorry I misspoke earlier. It's likely your countryman is the previous generation as it was a split year of productions. If so then that is a good thing as you would have the very best of a production platform. So many things were improved up till the end. Just do you oil changes every 5,000mi. And check oil level regularly and you'll be happy with her. I tell my friends and family to buy the last year production of any car.
Why is it that you mention the 2013 Mini in this video about gen 3's? Isn't 2013 a gen. 2? And, in fact, the last version (i.e. the best) of that previous generation car? Am I wrong?
You are correct. If it is a convertible it will carry one more year into the new platform or next generation. previous and new platforms will overlap a year.
You said “don’t get 2013-2015 because it’s an early model it had issues” but then only specified the issues with the 3 cylinder... what about the b48 in the early f56 models? What was less reliable about them?
Yes, the b48 ( 4 cylinder ) is the better engine of the two. I don't recommend purchasing the first two years of any new platform. They have the most issues.
Crank pulleys, motor mounts, recalls. Those first years have little issues. Mostly is covered by some kind of back end extended warranty eventually. You'll be fine. Just get the S model with the 4 cylinder.
Hi Mike, I'm looking at buying a 2011 manual mini cooper 2-door hardtop and I was wondering what commonly needs to be done by 100,000 miles. There's one I'm looking at with 65,000 miles and I was just wondering if we could talk or if you had any suggestions.
Pre-2012 R56 Minis use the N14 engine which are known to have loads of problems. Timing chain and the water pump are 2 things will most likely need attention in the N14. The later N18 in the 2012 models had a lot less issues with the timing chain, but the same water pump issue the N14 had, unless if you buy a Mini equipped with an N18 engine built after March of 2012 (so pretty much any Mini Cooper S Model past 2013).
Hi! Im a student that just brought my first car this week. I have question.....I just brought a 2016 mini countryman cooper s all4 with 97,764 miles and it going to be delivered a week later after the bumper dent is fixed. I TOLD THE dealerships that i want the 3 year warranty that cost 3,700 but i haven't paid for it yet. When i wanted to know more about it they sent me this: "Krishala, This is Jessica in the business office. The coverage you have covers the Engine, Transmission and Drivetrain for 3 years. I will give Milena a copy of your coverage and a pamphlet explaining your powertrain coverage when she delivers the vehicle. The company will also send you a packet around 45 days out welcoming you and with any additional contact information." Is this worth it because I'm having doubts? I already paid for the car just not the warranty. Please help! I brought car from neil huffman mazda Volkswagen....
Hi and congratulations on your purchase! You will love your MINI. I have a video on extended warranties and what to watch for. You can search for it in the search bar. Any warranty is better than no warranty. There are many plastic parts on newer cars these days that fail and leak oil and coolant. This will be your main maintenance costs as the vehicle ages. The mileage on that MINI is high already. I'm hoping they addressed any issues already on the vehicle. Ask if the warranty will cover known failure points on this car like rubber oil gaskets for oil leaks. Plastic items such as oil filter housing assembly. Which is common to leak either or both engine coolant or oil.
I have a CooperS R56 with N14 with fuel pressure code I changed HPFP, In tank fuel pump and fliter the fuel line cleaned the injectors and I get 5 bars for in tank and 7bar from HPFP but still have the code and bad start can you please help
hello Mike, I have a 2014 Mini Cooper and it happens now and then that the engine cuts out after starting. I already had it read out but there was no error. Do you have an idea?
They've only been making the (BMW) Mini since, what was it, 2001. You'd think that by now, it could have reliability as a given. The plain fact is that BMW's are not particularly reliable cars, no matter which model you're talking about, BMW badged or Mini badged. Used car sales guys hate them, and view them as cars just waiting for the next thing to go wrong. And usually expensively.
It is the same engine and transmission as the other MINI's the same year. Generally MINI's are not known for their reliability compared to Japanese brands.
All tho this 2015 Countryman ALL 4 mini is an “S” w with 49K it’s $18,995. You say in this video better to buy a 2016 to present. Mini’s are going like hot cakes so should I just take the 2015 S ALL 4 and spend the $2000 on the 125K to 60 month’s CARMAX Warranty?. I appreciate the guidance cause I don’t have any brothers , lol., I stayed away from 3 cylinder and trying not to be emotional, The the 2016 Countryman S ALL 4 had 11,000 more miles and was $2,000 more. I promise I won’t bug you anymore after this .🤐
You will be happy with either one. The warranty is a smart move as they have one of the best. In this situation I'd go with the 2015. Just be sure to check your oil level often and perform oil services every 5000 miles. Instead of what the factory recommends at around 10,000 miles. I wish you the best.
I’ve been crying for the last 15 minutes (yes like a girl). My mechanic of 24 years said NO NO NO. If you buy it please don’t bring it to me. He just fixed a mini for $12,00, the owner did not take care of it, I would. My girlfriend has had a used one for 3 years no issues, never got a PPI. I even had a 2003 or 4, CVT, Pepper White, no problems. In 2 of your videos you said 2016 and later are great. I’ve got a 30 day money back guarantee. If I spring for the $2000 warranty they have to repair it? Right? I’m so mad. I WANT A MINI! About this 🤐 sorry.
Hard to say. The n18 issues are more predictable as they have been around longer. It is also the better engine of the 2nd gen. If you find a clean one with low miles then I would jump on it. The third gen S is more reliable so far , but when it needs serviced there aren't to many shops that will touch them besides the dealer. It is a completely different vehicle now.
@japanwatchconnection It was made with BMW, engine block is PSA, with engineering teams of both. Anyway it is still crap, they ruined beautiful r56 chassis with terrible unreliable engines.
japanwatchconnection That is true all Pugs and Citroens were crapy as well and they continued to use them even after BMW ditch them. Though I found article somewhere i think Evo, BMW had far more engineers on team. Engine block was taken from old Pugs. BMW gave all technology, VANOS, Valvetronic, etc....and also they unreliability 😂 You take 2 unreliable brands in last two decade and you get Prince....that engine didn’t have a chance from start.
2012 clubman S...worst piece of junk i've ever owned and has ever been made. almost bankrupted me. i needed therapy after i dumped that garbage can and i still have nightmares. folks...don't do it, just don't do it.

Hi, it is the 3rd generation. If it's an S model then I'd go for it.
@@MikeMDs hi mike, thank you for your reply. Yes. That is S model .
Thank you somuch mike
Thanks mike!!!
Thoughts?
No mistake, it is the same as the rest just a bit bigger. Same engine and transmission. Only difference is it is all wheel drive.
Tq mike..luv this mini..👍👌
I’ve noticed that it’s seem like when I look at minis 2009 , 2015 ! People & dealer for sale? I almost bought the 15 I’m glad I didn’t because there’s a reason whether for sale
For 2015, If it is an 'S' Model ( non countryman ), then it is good. It's the first year of the new good 4 cylinder.
It seems a bit pricey for the miles. But if it was maintained well beforehand then I say go for it.
@@MikeMDs Thanks for the reply! How much you will give for a fair price? 12k or 11k? And should I be worried about the engine or turbo due to the high mileage? Let me know, thanks again!
I’m in the fence on a 15 S model. Should I avoid it or a PPI should be enough?
This is very helpful
Happy to help!
Hi Mike! I know this is out of topic, but is there anything I need to be on the look out for in my 2010 Mini Cooper D with an N47T engine? Thank you!
Hi Mike I am in the process of buying a 2009 mini Clubman s with 88k miles. What should I look out for so that she won't buy a moneypit mini... Thanks Mike.
When you refer to the LATE 2013 Mini, is there a dividing line within this model year? Are you referring to the base N16 engine?
Thanks a lot!
You're welcome!
i see them pop up for sale in my area i think there cool but i always run the other way
Mike, since you are familiar with MINIs...recently the center nut on the rear shock(s) became loose on my 2016 MCS(under warranty) and it introduced clunk. Dealer removed shocks and tightened that nut. 1) Any idea why that nut became loose? 2) Because of the factory torque error or defect in the part? 3) Do you think it is temporary fix and nut may come loose again or not?
The bottom or the top?
@@MikeMDs It is the top center nut on the rear shock. This nut holds the upper shock mount to the shock itself.
I have not seen that. Only the bottom eccentric bolts. they have to be replaced when doing an alignment and if not they get loose again.
2019 s model is very good
What is the best automatic version of Mini ? Tiptronic or dual clutch
They are doing great things with automatics now as far as shifting speeds and sport programs are concerned. Reliability wise I can't speak for the MINI's as they are too new. As far as the BMW's go, the dual clutch trans are have more issues with higher mileage.
From the previous clip you said get the 2nd gen cooper S but this video you recommend the 3rd gen cooper S so which one is better?
You are correct ha. Out of the first and second gen, I pick the best ( my favorite) amongst them. This is a much newer video . And if money isn't an issue, then the third gen S model. But the second gen S model with the N18 engine may be more attainable. And of course a manual. These are my two favorite. I think the third gen S is more reliable, and the S has more power. But is more money and hard to find in a manual.
In EU we have this three cilinder engine with 102 HP. This being MINI ONE, what can you say about this one?
I do not have any experience with the three cyl. Does anyone else? Feel free to comment.
How about the engine used on the Countryman Cooper SD 2.0 engine? is it reliable?
Diesel? Sadly we don't have experience with diesel here in the states.
mike hi I purchased a Mini Countryman s turbo 2014 with 46,000 miles is like new..is a good purchase?
Hey! What is the best mini cooper S 2.0 to buy, from what year?
Hello, Mike are there Two different kinds of engines presented as 2016 Mini S Countryman. Can both be actually 2016 3rd Generation? A bit confused.
Yes, The " S " ( which is a 4 cylinder turbo ) and the " non S " ( which is a 3 cylinder turbo )
@@MikeMDs Awesome, thanks!
Hello, I currently have a 2014 countryman s. How reliable would you say it is considering it’s between 2013-2015?
Those are the best years.
@@MikeMDs so what kind of issues? I’m looking at one today from a private seller
Crank pulleys, motor mounts, recalls. Those first years have little issues. Mostly is covered by some kind of back end extended warranty eventually. You'll be fine. Just get the S model with the 4 cylinder.
How about the diesel ones? I was looking into a Cooper D 2014+ 🙂
I don't have experience with the diesel MINI models unfortunately.

Excuse me? What 3rd Gen mini makes 305 horse powers? Even the GP that you excluded doesn't make that much power.
Yes only the AWD JCW versions
Hi Mike, I'm looking at buying a 2011 manual mini cooper 2-door hardtop and I was wondering what commonly needs to be done by 100,000 miles. There's one I'm looking at with 65,000 miles and I was just wondering if we could talk or if you had any suggestions.
Hi I have another video for that. "What's the best used MINI to buy" Thanks for watching
Thanks you!
Do these conclusions apply to Clubman as well?
Oh, I see at the end it says ALL models, thanks!
What is its not a s model for a 2016 mini clubman??
shame 3rd doesn't look as good
What year falls under third generation
I have a CooperS R56 with N14 with fuel pressure code I changed HPFP, In tank fuel pump and fliter the fuel line cleaned the injectors and I get 5 bars for in tank and 7bar from HPFP but still have the code and bad start can you please help
Hard to know without physically diagnosing. May be a bad high pressure fuel rail sensor.
Yeah changed that two. I understand just keep me in mind if you come across anything like that please!
Thank you so much for the reply
I’m looking into a 2015 2door S model with 25k miles on it. Good find or leave it?
Wow low miles. I'd grab it
hello Mike, I have a 2014 Mini Cooper and it happens now and then that the engine cuts out after starting. I already had it read out but there was no error. Do you have an idea?
May be a high pressure fuel pump starting to go out. Hard to say.
Hi, is the Mini Cooper Paceman reliable?
So what’s the best years for a countryman S ? To buy
2018 and newer . Make sure it is an S model.
Four-cylinder Mini 2013 ? Base help
That one is good. The last of the second generation. Being a base model it will naturally be more reliable than the S.
I listen to every thing you say
Would you suggest this generation or the previous generation (with the n18)? I cannot decide between the two.
@@MikeMDs Thank you for your reply! Would you say that the second generation is easier to work on?
@japanwatchconnection It was made with BMW, engine block is PSA, with engineering teams of both. Anyway it is still crap, they ruined beautiful r56 chassis with terrible unreliable engines.
japanwatchconnection That is true all Pugs and Citroens were crapy as well and they continued to use them even after BMW ditch them.
Though I found article somewhere i think Evo, BMW had far more engineers on team. Engine block was taken from old Pugs. BMW gave all technology, VANOS, Valvetronic, etc....and also they unreliability 😂
You take 2 unreliable brands in last two decade and you get Prince....that engine didn’t have a chance from start.
Your presentation is excellent except for that idiot music in the background. You don't need that buddy boy, you're good enough without it.
Thank you for that. I will take that in to consideration from now on. :)
How bout Paceman?? 😭😭😭
The paceman has the same engine and transmission as the others. just the body is different basicly
BMW made sure to make them as ugly as possible. WTH were they thinking with that bucktoothed front end?!
They are so ugly their cute ha ha. Like a French Bulldog
2012 clubman S...worst piece of junk i've ever owned and has ever been made. almost bankrupted me. i needed therapy after i dumped that garbage can and i still have nightmares. folks...don't do it, just don't do it.
