Thank you for time and gracious attention to detail on the issues of the mini Cooper. It's a crying shame that these vehicles have so many engine issues. I don't understand why BMW, with its engineering prowess, longstanding history building stout engines, cannot just produce an engine that doesn't have these minor nagging issues. There's no excuse for failing gaskets or stretching timing chains from the leader in automotive engineering. You would virtually never see these kind of concerns in a Lexus ES 350 for example. So if they can produce a car that can go 500,000 mi on just oil changes, why can't BMW? I love the mini Cooper. I think it's phenomenal platform, and a fun car to drive, and I'd love to own one. But if I'm going to go for a long drive in the wilds and the outback all by myself far away from civilization on a nice drive I don't want to get stranded somewhere alone, and desolate and maybe not come back alive. I know that sounds quite dramatic but it's true. I want a vehicle where I could drive far and wide and have fun Will that worrying about getting stranded. Of course no vehicles perfect, but come on BMW you can do much better than this. Again thank you for such a great video informing potential owners of what they may run into. Best regards!

I genuinely loved my used 6-Speed 2005 MINI Cooper S (R53). However, I got burnt by it and its constant need for repairs! My last straw was when I had to drop $2K at the mechanic for repairs only for the car to still act up. I finally decided to sell it. Had a first gen (r53) Cooper S, cracking car with the supercharger whine, great handling and fast enough, probably the most fun car to drive that I've ever owned. Downsides constants oil leaks, noisy electric steering pump, had a pulley reduction on mine without changing the intercooler (my own fault) which cause the supercharger to overheat and damaged the bearings making the blades to touch and sent metal pieces into the engine, horrible mpg. If you're a car guy who likes to contantly look after your car definitely get one if you're not and need some more peace of mind, then stay away from them
Mini Coopers are actually harder to service and maintain than a Mustang. If you actually end up owning this car for 5 years, you will spend around 8-12k repairing/replacing parts. The US Better Business Bureau received complaints about the Mini Cooper Footwell Module unit (FRM). Questions: 1. Is the FRM a known defective part? If so, shouldn’t the FRM unit be recalled and replaced for free instead of customers being encouraged to pay over $2,000 (USD) for an extended parts warranty? This could be a major car safety issue, even in 3rd generation Minis! 2. Is the FRM damaged every time the car battery is replaced? If so, the repair could tentatively be over $1,500, including labor for a new car battery and new FRM unit, every 4-5 years. 3. What assurances do customers have when purchasing a pre-owned Mini? (i.e. Have the car batteries and FRM units been thoroughly inspected, calibrated, repaired and/or replaced? The Mini service advisor cannot just tell owners of pre-owned Minis that the car was purchased “AS IS” and expect the customer to pay for potentially known defective parts. There are some questions that need to be answered by the Mini Cooper/BMW corporation to the customers. Buyers beware! Check your US state for car lemon laws.
You need to specify Generation for the specific problems instead of making broad statements about all Minis. For instance timing chain issues are 2nd Gen issues, Not 3rd generation like your standing by.

Nothing about hard starts cold, stalling, HPFP issues, carbon buildup on the valves. Nothing about the real issues that can get you killed on a highway in the USA. But he's British maybe they don't drive over 25 kilometers per hour.
I find your explanation somewhat generally negative without mentioning the correct engine type. It would have been better if you had done the 1st generation and the 2nd generation mini separately. I have a 2nd generation mini with the 1.5t 3 cylinder petrol. I have no complaints so far, 6 years and 120dkm
Minis are fun to drive. But cheaply made (but expensive) plastic parts and modern BMW reliability let the side down. Don't buy one unless you have a healthy budget and patience for repairs.
Make sure your Hyundai or Kia cars have installed immobilizer software. I recently rented a 2023 Kia Soul that had a sticker to warn potential car thieves that the immobilizer software was installed in the car. Also, Hyundai and Kia’s catalytic converters are routinely stolen.
Although stood by a third generation, the problems he’s talking about are mostly second generation issues with the 1.6 petrol 4 cylinder engine which was Peugeot Citroen design. The BMW 1.5 3 cycle dear engine in the 3rd generation is very reliable.

Check your US state for car lemon laws.

engineered to bring it back to BMW dealer service department.
You need to specify Generation for the specific problems instead of making broad statements about all Minis. For instance timing chain issues are 2nd Gen issues, Not 3rd generation like your standing by.
Great info thanks, music is annoying, can just about hear you
Great advice but damn that music is annoying. Too loud.
Water pump leaks and failure common place on this model and oil loss
Thank you for Watching
My 2017 clubman bucking, losing power
Could be a engine mount if it’s bucking they are prone to going
@Doppo69 No, it was water in the transmission from a cracked oil cooler.
@@Gerry-fw9pp oh that’s not good! Hows reliability been in general? I’m supposed to be buying a 2016 copper s tomorrow I’m abit nervous
@@Doppo69 maintenance is key
@@Gerry-fw9pp it’s been serviced every year it’s done 28000 miles but it’s had 4 owners and a resonator delete which tells me it’s been boy raced… not sure it’s 11k pounds
Skip the music ,it doesnt add anything but distraction.
Thankyou this is a very old video music is not an issue now, thank you for the watch
Shame the class actions suit for the timing chain that was won in the USA didn't do crap to help the European Mini buyers. Never going back to Mini again.
Mini cooper s problem?
If these things had a Toyota or Honda engine they would sell like hot cakes and I would buy two in 5 seconds.
Turn the “ music “ off, please
Quite distracting music can barely hear you
Watching this is like watching a ping pong game
Its not a real mini its a we paid for the name and made a terrible job of it, and they have lots of problems my friends petrol sounds like a diesel nobody would take it of her hands thay all said its fkt, mini said o they can sound like that sometimes but there's nothing wrong with it .
Thank you for watching
That background music is annoying AF.
These cars are a horrible money pit! Be aware stay away from all mini's wife's clubman transmission went bad at 60k, uncountable battery replacements, trim pieces falling off, drive shaft, oil leaks from evrywhere! eats tyres like crazy, they do look nice, but the quality they offer 4 the money is baddddddd 👎 👃 👎
2019 minis have a problem with back brakes
In another word, I would just stick with Toyota and Lexus.
guys that own garages love them.Becouse there money makers.Any work done the hole front of the car has to come off DONT BUY ONE
Nothing about hard starts cold, stalling, HPFP issues, carbon buildup on the valves. Nothing about the real issues that can get you killed on a highway in the USA. But he's British maybe they don't drive over 25 kilometers per hour.
Make sure your putting the correct fuel grade in the petrol tank, they hate low grade petrol.
let the Japanese make this Mini
I find your explanation somewhat generally negative without mentioning the correct engine type. It would have been better if you had done the 1st generation and the 2nd generation mini separately. I have a 2nd generation mini with the 1.5t 3 cylinder petrol. I have no complaints so far, 6 years and 120dkm
The red light is very distracting
Minis are fun to drive. But cheaply made (but expensive) plastic parts and modern BMW reliability let the side down. Don't buy one unless you have a healthy budget and patience for repairs.
Essentially exactly the same car .
I beg to differ.
All english men are the same
So like most modern cars - full of issues
…still looking to buy a Paceman S 😉
Most of the issues he mentions are for 1st and 2nd Gens. New ones are fine
Regular servicing as with any car is the key...if you want an ultra reliable car, go Hyundai or Kia...
Make sure your Hyundai or Kia cars have installed immobilizer software. I recently rented a 2023 Kia Soul that had a sticker to warn potential car thieves that the immobilizer software was installed in the car. Also, Hyundai and Kia’s catalytic converters are routinely stolen.
tell me not to buy a mini without telling me
there crap they have a plastic chain tensioner whats breaks no matter how much you look after them .then the engien has to come out. There a money pit
Bad video as lumping all generations together and not clear what gen he's talking about and not going into much depth
I agree can’t he just talk about the one he’s standing next to 3rd generation 1.5 3 cylinder for example
Although stood by a third generation, the problems he’s talking about are mostly second generation issues with the 1.6 petrol 4 cylinder engine which was Peugeot Citroen design. The BMW 1.5 3 cycle dear engine in the 3rd generation is very reliable.

Agreed, useless misleading video really
Would have been better if you described the faults applicable to each generation so not much help really
Is there anything that dosnt go wrong, id stay clear of these cars wow they are a nightmare.
its normal for a bmw engine to loss oil everywhere from the engine..... since 70 years lolll
They sound like FN nighmares!
German rubbish in this case , VW same engines rattling from new , I wood not recommend one .
Thank you for watching
The unreliable engine in the second generation is French (Peugeot Citroen design). The BMW engine in the 3rd generation is pretty reliable.
Mini coper brakes sucks... 😂😂😂
Whats that light
