Sound of my childhood. Was born in Shortlands before moving to Eden Park on the Hayes line. The BREL 465's sounded much better with the old Brush Traction motors then they do now. The Tram platforms in Beckenham started being built in 1997 so could well have been in place in 1998. What wasn't there though was the dive under at Shortlands Junction. It was an at grade junction with CML trains having to wait for Catford Loop line trains to cross. The dive under was built to cut congestion times for Eurostar trains that used to pass through Shortlands before HS1 was built, that was short lived as Eurostar moved to its new home at St Pancras shortly after it was built. All was not lost though as it increased the available pathing and the VIC to ORP stopper doubled in frequency to 4 an hour in leui of the Eurostar not using the line anymore!
