I well remember that night when the late Hermon Frederick, the husband of Jean Frederick ("Hold back the Night," "He Promised"), returned to sing despite being health challenged. The celebration of we saints for his victorious return was very genuine.

You know you're singing when all you have to do is sing the first word "something" and the church goes up.

there is something soulless about the way the music sounds now. I've heard it described as hip-hop gospel. it just seems to leave you with an empty feeling. this is real music! thank you so much for these postings of St. James

You can tell the organist DEFINITELY learned from Rev. Nicks. His playing sounds just like Rev. Nicks. He was feeling that song.. Love St. James Choir.

He's my favorite sing. I remember hear him sing and one day I ask if could sing that song again ( I was only nine years old at that time. And the next time it was the adult choir turn they sung it .

My churches know better, but this right here is all the proof you need on whether to keep the Hammond or not in the sanctuary. That brotha is heating that organ up.

I came upon this video years ago. I have wondered myself about God’s Grace. I don’t know either. But- Listening to this version has given me the inspiration to keep seeking. I am just thankful for His Grace. Yet it’s all about His Love.
    Thank you for this upload.

I praise God for videos like this. As someone else stated it does remind you of how church used to be. I'm trying my to keep the tradition of playing the organ the old fashion way going. You're right, no one plays like this anymore but I'm trying to bring it back and keep it alive.

Thank you sooo much. To anyone who takes the
time to share these videos - Videos of the way
church used to be, how we used to sing, how we used to worship and praise. These
songs are immortal and just as powerful and meaningful now - and full of depth! I praise God for you!

Good God Almighty!! This is it right here! These are the originals eventhough sister Loretta Oliver kills it in her own way. I'll take both. The point is they both can testify about it, and we can feel it.

Marcell77, do you remember St James 'participation each year in the Russell Street Baptist Church's pageant of Choirs programs? This was my 1st awareness of Charles Nicks and St. James. I still have every album they ever recorded and will cherish them all my life. Renee Thomas, the Fredericks and so many other soloists have touched my heart over these years. Bless you for posting on UA-cam!! It brings back the Best memories of my life in Detroit.

Hammond organ has it 'sold up' in the black churches and the white pentecostal churches but the question is there any good old school organists left that can them with this 'right feel?' I miss this great sound!!!

@MrReminisce-you're so right. But I do know a guy who talked a church into getting rid of their Hammond C-3 because he didn't have a need for it. He didn't play organ, only keyboard. I said to the head deacon "Black churches don't get rid of a Hammond organ because older saints love to hear 'Amazing Grace' on the organ" He said he didn't know what he was thinking when they did it.
