so if you can use "de" for "because" then what's the difference with "kara"? because I always thought when you want to use "because of something" then you use "kara".
The problem with Japanese verbs is that they usually don't correspond 100% to their English equivalents and this による is one of those cases. "To depend on" and "because of" are different meanings not really related from the perspective of an Indoeuropean mind. I would need to find another expression that encapsulates both meanings so I can perfectly understand when による means "depend on" a d when it means "because of" without getting confused.
agreed, id actually learned による as "because of"/"due to" exclusively. And "X depends on Y" as 次第. But now that i know による ALSO means to depend on smth, well... nothing else to do now than to rely on memory alone cause as you said, "to depend on" and "because of" have nothing to do with each other from a westerners perspective :D
@@_syzygy_ I recently came across a similar situation with 見える. 見える is taught as meaning "can see" or "to be visible", but when using it "can see" or "to be visible" don't suit quite well and becomes really confusing as is the case with these two sentences: 私は空が見える and 私は目が見える. 私は空が見える would be translates as "I can see the sky" or "the sky is visible", but 私は目が見える is translated as "I can see". 目 is omitted but not 空 in the first sentence being both sentences structurally identical. "I can see eyes", "Eyes are visible". If you follow the given meanings for 見える makes no sense. But I started to think about it and I think that it is better to think of 見える as meaning "to make visibility (possible). This way you can reconcile both sentences: "the sky makes visibility (posible) and "My eyes make visibility (possible) and then you can translate them into natural English as "I can see the sky" and "I can see" without confusion anymore. For ni yoru I will need a similar expression that encapsulates both meanings.
