    Huge fan of what you guys do! Bought ice cream and peach cobbler from you guys last week after discovering you on UA-cam and just ordered some freeze dried sherbet and coconut cream. I saw your sugar loaf review and Celeste's review made me want to get that one over coconut cream. But I see your family reference coconut cream as a favorite in several videos. For a first time mango grower, do you think Sugar Loaf is hard to start with? I read it grows straight up. Ive read that it also ripens from the bottom up, so if you are not an experienced picker, you could have a mango that is ripe on the bottom and hard on top. Have you found this to be an issue?
    Also if you had to pick between sugar loaf, pina colada, or coconut cream, which would plant? Im also buying ice cream, so I want to make sure this one would be different enough from ice cream to be worth having an additional tree.

      @@pescatarianwifelife2751 thank you so much for your kind words and support of our little farm! I have two sugar loaf trees in the ground. They were hit back by the freeze in 2022, and haven’t flowered since. One tree did produce a few fruits before the freeze and they were very good. For now, I would say coconut cream, but it has a twisted, crazy growth habit, but can be maintained. It does take a few years to start producing and in the past, I know some people had good size coconut cream trees that broke off at the graft union area. I hope that helps some. I wish our Sugar Loaf trees didn’t have the big set back, otherwise I would probably have a better answer to your question.

    I planted a Pina Colada 3or 4 years ago. It grew fairly rapidly and strongly out of the gate. There was no flower at all for 2 or 3 years but this year every growing point has an inflorescence and some panicles have 10- 20 fruits set, maybe due to the hand pollination done with the assistance of one of those fluffy plastic dusters you can find in a dollar store. I'm ecstatic w the tree at this point but am braced for a nice crop of likely not premium flavor per the warning of Craig. No problems, still anticipating the 3rd straight year for a massive 'Carrie' crop, maybe the biggest ever despite removing a third of the canopy after last year's harvest. Still waiting on signs of the purported 'Glenn's' reliable production ( not even a flower last year, and I bought it to offset the sometimes lame 'Carrie' ) 20 fruit in 6 seasons WT? Nothing from the most recent additions of 'Lancetilla,' or "Coconut Cream' just now anthesis of 'Orange Sherbet' and Keitt and my Carrie seedlings must be self quarantining. PPK seedling has lemony smelling leaves but it's not even thinking about flowering Hollywood FL is an absolute center for mango growers and it's easy to collect 80 pounds a day from the service allies from fruit drop alone. I've gotten to sample a huge number of varieties but have never found one to surpass the 'Carrie'. PPK is a tie tho and that's the end of it for me. If the new Zill varieties are what they are cracked up to be then I am living in heaven.

    How are these on disease resistance, I had plans on putting in a PPK not only because it is a top tier mango flavor wise, but because of another important factor, season, I want an early season variety. but I have had read mixed information on growth habit, some say its very vigorous tree, others say its easily manageable moderate grower. I have read that it is relatively disease resistant to Anthracnose and Powdery Mildew, but somewhat susceptible to BBS. Craig what has been your experience and observations, both at your location and what you have seen personally at other growers homes?
    BTW we are in Hollywood, east of US1 about 2 km from the beach, trees in the area are generally very clean. my VP never had any problems before it croaked in Irma last year. this new tree is to replace that one. but do not want a tree that is even close to being as vigorous as the VP was. my main concern again is BBS and easy manageability. low maintenance.

      I planted a PPK last year and it’s been struggling. I feel maybe the cold weather took its toll last winter. It’s finally flushing for the second time this year. I planted a Glenn and Carrie 15 ft. away on both sides of it and they are doing awesome. I’d still plant a PPK if I were you.

      Ours isn’t super aggressive or dwarf. It isn’t a big producer, but the fruit is delicious.

    Ive tasted all but CC. Can’t wait. PPK is a great quick snack size PC is a stop and eat me. Looks CC is gonna be more like a sit and eat a while and lick the seed.

    Does coconut cream produce well in South Florida?

    • @SulcataGrove
      @SulcataGrove  5 років тому

      Juliano J. Our tree produces great in Sarasota. I’ve heard some people have issues with production on CC, even here. That just hasn’t been our experience.

      @@SulcataGrove Thanks for the reply, did you do anything special to the tree? Is it on high ground?

    • @SulcataGrove
      @SulcataGrove  5 років тому

      Juliano J. Just planted at ground level. Yard floods every couple of years for a week or so, very dry a lot of the year (30’ above sea level). Planted around 15-20’ from our bodega and chicken pen. Has a single irritation dripped which drips slowly year round. We mulch heavily and add 0-0-50 after it’s done fruiting.

      Juliano J. We just planted Sugar Loaf this year so I don’t know how it will produce yet. We may add a second coconut cream tree - it’s that good :)

      We were so sad when the last one of the season was gone. We dehydrated a bunch of varieties this year and the coconut creams were everyone’s favorite dehydrated.
