Imberbus - the annual bus event to the restricted area
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- Every year, buses old and new descend onto Salisbury Plain to provide tripper the chance to experience Imberbus. When people can travel into the MoD's restricted firing ranges on a variety of buses.
I heard about it from my friend Richard, and so I thought I'd go try it out.
It is a grand day out when, for just £10, you can ride around the countryside on classic buses stopping off on the way for tea and cake and the odd pint or two. How very British. How very lovely.
All aboard!
Location: Warminster, Wiltshire, UK
Vehicles: up to 40 different buses are used throughout the day.
Price: £10.00
Date of Travel: August 2024
Thank you to everyone that supports the channel by subscribing, liking, commenting or just watching these videos. I really appreciate it!
An enjoyable jaunt!
You're becoming a celebrity on your trips.
@@colinriley123 haha! Only on things that are full of transport fans. People were very nice though, which was lovely.
Got time for a beer too !
That looked like a tremendous day out and the video was enhanced no end by your enthusiastic narration.
@@Timstravels01 it was a great day out! Thanks for the kind words Tim! Don't forget to give me a shout if you are passing down my way at any time. 👍
@@JohnnyHooverTravels I will indeed. 😊
Excellent JH
@@kevincollis4768 thanks Kevin 👍
You know you’ve hit the big time when you start being recognized by subscribers. Thank you for taking us along another interesting adventure
@@PeteG143 haha - well one view of the subscriber thing was that Imberbus was a bit of a honeypot for the kind of people that watch the channel. Hardly my normal day when out with my camera! I do get recognised more often these days, but it is still very rare!
Best wishes to you, and thanks for watching 👍
Lovely change of pace. Almost feels better to watch you do it than to have to battle the crowds myself... except for the beer of course. Another great watch, thanks!
@@horsehollerer no worries. Always happy to drink a pint for you... 😀
Thanks for enjoying a bit of second hand queuing 🤣
He’s famous….. very nice to meet you ‘on the buses’!
@@chrismoore4423 absolute pleasure for my part too. Thanks for the great chat! 👍
Completely different, but what a delight. Lot’s of fantastic RM action, but enjoyed Volvo East Lancs action, as used to regularly watch East Lancs buses being built
@@russellb1212 great to be able to bring back some memories. I still blame Mark at let's make a trip for all this bus action, but it has been surprisingly good fun!
Thanks for watching along 👍
I don't know anything about buses but I know what I like! The very pretty "Royal Blue" at about 14:57
Yes, that one is absolutely amazing!
@@phronsiekeys got to say, the Delaine one was the one that got away for me! The blue and cream looks very stylish. 👍
Good stuff 👍 The Rose and Crown Tilshead missed out on an opportunity - mugs
@@john07973 huge fail ! But the village hall was a delight, so I'm not complaining 😀
Thanks for watching 👍
Thank you Johnny for another superlative video! There is now such a huge diversity in your output! But two things shine through all your videos, The quality of your filming, and your wonderful very personal style of explaining what you are showing us.
I grew up in northern Hertfordshire in the fifties and early sixties. So the highlight for me was your ride on the 1952 'RT'. And remember there were 4,825 of those, as against only about 2,500 Routemasters.
@@Fan652w thanks Roger. The Regent III was my favourite ride of the day. Loved where I sat and those shots looking down the bonnet. 👍
I certainly enjoyed this too as I am a train man more so but this was way cool. Thanks for sharing.
@@gavinhagan8357 you are very welcome. We'll get some railway action in next week!
Thanks for watching 👍
Great video. I never understood what the interest was in visiting an abandoned village on MOD land but with the visits to some quaint villages plus the cream tea/beer - I get it completely!
@@andrewlong6438 well yes, i think we are both on the same track here... 😉
Thanks for coming along again 👍
Great video Johnny, presume you caught the train you wanted back to Exeter ?
@@andywillis2650 thanks! Yes, i got back to Exeter no problem... although people going further had more problems as it was terminated early at St David's due to staff shortages!
Thanks for watching 👍
What a great day out! You’re becoming quite famous. Don’t forget the little people as you ascend to great heights on UA-cam. 🎉
@@sandiandgregh don't worry about that! There's no ascending going on here... still in the gutter where I'm happiest 😀
It is still very odd (as well as nice) when someone randomly says "hello".
IMBER.... We do it because we're British.
@@peterbrush2631 i suppose we do!
Thanks for watching 👍
Nice one - I particularly enjoyed seeing the '1952 bus' - those RTs were the staple of services around Sevenoaks, where I grew up, and I do remember the sound of them climbing the hills in the area! Look forward to your next video.
@@ricktownend9144 thanks very much! I did enjoy the RT too!
Thanks so much for watching too 👍
Really miss 6X!

St Giles' church isn't the only original building remaining. The old manor house (Imber Court) still exists. The school, the Bell pub, two farms, some cottages and houses are all based on the original buildings but have been stripped out for training use.
@@wessexdruid7598 thanks for the extra information and thanks too for watching 👍
He mentioned New Zealand! (Sort of) Love seeing all those buses from different eras.
@@dafrankp you're welcome Dave 👍
Thanks for this video Johnny, much appreciated. Even The Times had a great shot of an RM cavalcade heading to Imber in their online edition the other day. I might have to time my next UK visit to coincide. Cheers from New Zealand, Marty.
@@Pykem thanks Marty. Best wishes to you from Devon UK 🇬🇧👍
What fun, thanks for such a jolly report! I used to get a RM to school back in the year dot, and the best seat was the back one. You could gently thump your fellow pupils on the head as they went down the stairs :D
@@ampersand. yep. At the back with the naughty kids...
A great video! I was at the event and caught the train to Warminster that arrived at 09:10, not expecting a large queue. And yet, outside, the line had nearly reached past the Lidl! Good lord, the potholes coming into Gore Cross were horrendous! It was a fairly good event and I may go again next year!
@@LWR1 ah yes, there certainly were a few potholes! Busy early too! Still, I reckon an early start and later finish... with a long lunch in the middle might be in order next time!
Thanks for watching 👍
We were all amazed at so many people being there that early. Last year it got stupidly busy in the afternoon, so I reckon people thought they would try to beat the queues. Luckily we had many more buses this year, and the queue was able to be eaten up comparitively quickly.
We were out on Friday with spray paint marking the worse of the potholes to help the drivers. With limited access to the area, Friday was the first time there was a chance to erect the bus stops and the wooden shelter (at Imber). Think the staff of the TfL bus stop contractor, Trueform, enjoyed a day out in the countryside for a change !
@@brianbell4937 Yes, i felt the queues both went down fast and were also handled well by the volunteers. 👍
@@brianbell4937 do pass on my thanks to everyone involved. You made for a grand day out! 👍
It was a really nice video in fact you videos are always very interesting
@@richardbaguley6165 thank you, that's very kind. And thank you so much for watching too. 👍

How very British , from start to finish , queueing , cream tea , tea , pint of Real Ale , red buses , the only thing not British was the weather
The sun does shine on Salisbury Plain sometimes. I was at Imberbus in 2019 and the weather was just like that. The sight of New Zealand Farm Camp on top of the hill brought back good memories.
@@Battismore-Blue Yes. It was such a cool day. And, the weather is often good down here in South West England !

I was planning to go there this year but I will try out my luck next year. Indeed the Routemaster is still a great bus and rode on them on the T15 route in London which is brilliant. Yet, I remember riding on them in London back in the early 2000s

@@JohnnyHooverTravels during my last trip to England I was at the Brooklands Museum in Weybridge. I loved their heritage bus rides also on RT buses for about £3 or so
The DMU powered by Leyland 680's two in each power / driving car, through semi automatic gearboxes and reversing transfer boxes. That distinctive Leyland exhaust sound. Nice to see an RT on the road and not stuck in a museum. 1950 the last year of manufacture, I was driving 38/39 ones still in service in the 70's, they somehow ended up being some of the last withdrawn from service in the 80's. They survived so long as emerged from the LT Aldenham Bus Works every 3-4 years as a new bus, along with RF's and RM's having had a complete rebuild, the chassis having a different body than it went in with, except RM's as monocoque. The registration staying with the chassis and the RT/RF number with the body, occasionally the reg being put back on the wrong chassis, only discovered when sold as the bus chassis No. didn't match the reg No. and chassis No. recorded in the registration book.
This is not quite accurate about Aldenham. RM bodies were separated from the subframes. As you say, the chassis or subframe was rarely paired with the same body they came in with. The identity i.e. bonnet number and registration number were transferred from an incoming bus to one completed. This meant it was possible to see two buses with the same identity. One that had just arrived and another that was overhauled and ready to leave. This was done to save road tax. It meant certain identities were not seen for years as they were "works float". In fact there were two more Routemaster bodies than Routemaster identities because bodies took longer to overhaul than subframes. I think there were 10 extra RT bodies.
@@tonys1636 thanks for all that. Interesting to hear about your driving days 👍
And, of course, thanks for watching too 👍
@@Keith-lj7bz interesting clarification. So if a kid was bus spotting, then they could have spotted the same bus body twice carrying different numbers!
