Rice is a 6, he just isn’t as great at the line breaking side that comes with that role at times. That’s why you surround him with players that can break the lines with passes. He can sniff out danger better than most and carry the ball better than most, he just needs someone next to him to split defences which is understandable
THE PROBLEM 8s that he likes to get forward .Mainoo Bellingham Rice are all box to Bix midfielders.Wharton is the only true Defencive midfielder from the little I've seen of him.
Trente although not a defender can orcastrate from a defencive midfield position as long as you tell Rice to stare the defencive duties.
@@JohnJohn-cu7nk But last night Rice was the one getting forward which is stupid. Unless Wharton plays (which it's too early), Rice needs to hold his position and just clean up. The balance did not work last night because Mainoo kept on getting isolated when Rice pushed forward and he's probably not mobile or experienced enough to cover and it's not his game. Particularly with our defensive injuries - just have Rice sitting there and allow whoever plays next to him be it Mainoo or Gallagher to progress the ball forward. Foden also cannot play in the 10. We're not coached well enough in the press and he also allows the midfield to become to open. Rice can do this job and always has done for England.
Totally agree about Walker. He was out of position for the goal and at other times but he is blessed with positive support, no one will mention it, whereas if Trent had done that he would have been the main story re poor defending.He's an old school right back with a cross and hope at the end, most of which dont connect with anyone.
However the overall issue is Southgates style of play. Too conservative, too slow in the build up.

Gordon and Palmer together like this cannot start. I think it was to give them a run, but together they're ain't cutting it. Gordon was just doing hopeful crosses and Palmer bottled an easy chance. Palmer will be a utility for Saka. This is why Grealish should have been going. Foden was taking it easy.
Maybe it was a friendly so players didn't want to get injured before the tournament next week? As the back-line is dodgy this year with injuries, instead of Shaw, Maguire and Stones, Southgate should have taken: Mitchell, Branthwaite and Tomori.
Safegate should have made the changes straight after half time, not until 65 and 75 minutes.
Palmer set up a sitter for kane.

No escaping Mainoo was appalling in the move that led to the Iceland goal. Didn’t smell the danger, and didn’t race back to support Stones. Rice, from further forward, was back quicker.
Mainoo is really poor defensively. As a man united fan he needs to improve that part of his game

I don’t see any central defence partnerships. They don’t play side-by-side, they play one slightly ahead of the other and that’s an art. One goes, one sits. I’m now hearing Stones is ill, it’s even harder to conceive of what system Southgate can cobble together by Sunday. It’s the most important partnership on the pitch, and we have no idea who’s going to be in there against a very fit, aggressive Serbia who can also play in patches. I’m…concerned!

Ben White would solve so many problems, but a coach put forth a Sancho level of demands, Southgate backed that. Sad? Not really as a non-brit.
Southgate has been successful because international football isn't about progressive play, but rather brute forcing wins through old school, defensive football. Im old enough to remember Southgates disastrous management in the prem and have no illusions as to what he will return to tactics wise when under pressure. Eddie Howe would probably destroy all comers in the Euros, but he's probably viewed as someone unwilling to bow down to the FA's commitment to losing on all fronts.

Saka has to start if he’s fit. There aren’t many players in this squad that are proven performers when it comes to the national team but Saka is one of them. Foden died his hair to honour gazza and got dropped after 2 games last euros & couldn’t start for us at the WC. Kane, our captain, yet he struggles in big games for us. Our bankers to perform are Pickford, rice & saka. If Maguire was fit he’d be there too but otherwise our players are hit & miss at best. I hope the likes of Gordon & eze step up like they can and Foden finally performs on the international stage
our defense is really bad honestly, i think we really needed ben white on the right with saka (not a possible choice for whatever reason unfortunately), still need trent in there tho imo so you'd have to play him midfield which im still not sure on
France keep Willy Saliba on the bench. Why? Because he wasn’t exactly watertight in Champions League. Still has stuff to learn. To us he may be the business but to Deschamps he was leaky in Champions League. I understand completely why he doesn’t trust Saliba. Euros is not the Premiership, it’s much more like Champions League.
Laurence, I’m much older than you. England have never, ever, ‘turned it on’. They’ve turned it in, they do that regularly, but they’ve never turned it on. The only time they ever threatened to turn it on was Mexico 1970, where they were easily the most sophisticated team in the tournament but totally lacked even basic self-belief and clearly thought they only won in 1966 because of home advantage. You must get that to win trophies you must, at some point, ‘turn it on’. Sometimes just for 5 mins. I go back to Qatar, France turned it on for 5 seconds and knew that at 1-0 the game was theirs. England never turn it on because they don’t have an it to turn.

He literally played Foden in the position everyone has been creaming over the thought of him in, played the most in form player in Palmer, gave both Gordon and Eze and opportunity to shine, played the best available options in defence. I’m not sure what else you expected him to do? The only real mistake was letting Ramsdale anywhere near the squad to begin with.

Not having a fall out with Ben White would have massively helped the backline. Grealish should 100% be there. Gordon is overrated, I just don't see it. Mainoo has talent but very young. We have defenders but Southgate can't setup a modern high line and game breaking midfield

It was a awful performance no getting away from that...the final ball was terrible they didn't seem to want to change their play and use the width of the pitch and go more direct...and foden is a issue...you either play him exactly in his club position or you don't play him at all ...He can't even get his shots on target from the left...he should learn to curl it back in instead of going across keeper all the time...England are gonna need to switch things up against these tactics otherwise it's pointless thinking about any kind of success

Midfield was tge problem for me All our midfielders are box to box .With Rice and Mainoo they need to learn when one goes forward the other holds.
Foden as tge other midfielder was camoed on the opposition goal are .This is why their was massive gaps all over the midfield.
The press was shit to Gorden kept dropping into central midfield from opposition goal kicks, instead of marking on the wing.
Rice should always hold. Unless Wharton plays. Yes I know for Arsenal he's not been doing this but he did this for WH and England in previous tournaments. Rice is the experienced player he needs to do the job.
This team looks shakey at the moment. Hope they can sharpen up in time
Oh dear. England’s back 4 doesn’t look good enough. There are players in there I wouldn’t want to see turning out for my team (Arsenal). Because of this, Rice will have to spend most of his time putting out fires and covering up for positional shortcomings of those around him, like…Bellingham. Or, God help us Kobbie. Real are past masters at creating roles for talented ballers with no positionality. I’m afraid I still don’t see Bellingham as a game changer. Of course he can play but this is England not Real Madrid. We’re going to be so busy plugging holes in that defence, Real will seem like a distant memory for the kid and the game could easily pass him by. Foden has minimal impact for England and now I’m hearing the only player we’ve got who has maximal impact for England, Saka, may be relegated to the bench to make way for someone who’s name I can’t even recall. Then Kane. It’ll be yet another tournament in which he scores 2 goals, one of them a penalty, and probably also misses a crucial one. But you can’t drop him, the others are just tap-in merchants. Conclusion, you can rely on England, they’ll always let you down. If there’s a ‘who cares’ vibe here, it’s because after thinking we’re improving we’ve now settled back into thinking there are always a good few teams better than us. All you need to know is, a few weeks ago the commentators said Kobbie Mainoo walks into this team. He’s a talented youngster with nil positional sense. Iceland? They’ve got the kybosh on us because they’re even more cautious than Southgate. In the big game, we’ll score first, drop back 10 yards and attack with 3 defend with 7, and lose 2-1.

A bit worried about the defence, not going to lie. Iceland got chances in both halves, so better teams would have had more chances.
Gordon's pace looked a threat, Palmer will do a decent job of backing up Saka (he won't start most games), and Trent showed his quality when he came on. (I think that if it was a competitive game, and other players were on the pitch, esp. Kane, I think a couple of TAA's deliveries would have resulted in goals).
There are more complete teams in the competition and I think if we reach the Quarters then that would be a good return. Talk of winning it is a bit far fetched. Maybe the Semis or the Final, if our defense was better (fit, able and settled/establised).
Trent needs to start in midfield alongside Rice and Bells as 10, drop Foden to the bench, he seldom delivers for England.

Mainoo has been inconsistent all season, some great games and some appalling ones (such as Palace) when he jogs about and doesn't put the effort in covering. Palmer over hyped, lots of effort with limited results (take out the penalties and hes bang average). Walker completely out of position for the goal and made no attempt to get back, just watched the ball hit the next. Gordon lots of effort but output not effective
Exactly, Gordon is like Bowen. A lotnof running to prove oneself, which is good, but lacking experience to make the work effective. I thought Palmer and Gordon were a let-down. There were even several chances to make a simple pass to Foden and they didn't pass.
