I heard a producer say that Mark Knopfler's work on the guitar was always masterful, yet it was never about his solos... It was about the music. I'm surprised that more guitarists that play the Fender Stratocaster (or any electric guitar, for that matter) don't take a page from this great finger-picker! One of the greats for sure! :)

To me, Mark Knopfler is one of a small handful of guitar players who can emote with the instrument the way a vocalist does with their voice. (David Gilmore being another that quickly springs to mind) The guitar playing on this song really drives home the weight and power behind the message of the lyrics. Excellent reaction, Daniel!

I may have shared this before...
    My Dire Straits story...
It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 PM... A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won 2 tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's Brothers in Arms tour show (1986) at the Boston Garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no he looks at me and says would you want to go? I respond in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day... we picked up the tickets at the door... I couldn't believe it they were sixth row Center on the floor I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second Encore song, it was really a very well-done show
I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.

Brought me to tears the first time I heard it as well. To me, it sounds like Mark is saying the lyrics while his guitar is singing them.
But the most moving time I heard it came watching my "guilty pleasure" of the 1980's - Miami Vice, which often incorporated popular songs. It shows up in a particularly memorable episode, Out Where the Buses Don't Run (Season 2 Episode 3 for those playing at home) - anyone else remember the one that starts with Baba O'Reilly and ends with Brothers in Arms, about the crazy ex-cop in a Hawaiian shirt, completely insane and obsessed with finding a particular drug lord? (Except that as the episode progresses, you wonder if there might actually be some method in his madness after all?) It also guest stars a very young David Strathairn - one of my favorite actors, right up there with Alan Rickman - as the former partner of said crazy ex-cop. Anyway... the song is used *really* well - Miami Vice did not always do their songs justice, but this time they nailed it. Seems like each line of the lyrics takes on a slightly different meaning. "We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms" indeed.

What a great song to react to! Knopfler's finger-style playing is so expressive. I love every song on that album - So Far Away, Walk of Life, and Money for Nothing. Great trumpet and sax work in Your Latest Trick, and Ride Across the River is another atmospheric journey like Brothers in Arms. While not a concept album, it's one of those that is prefect to play from start to finish. While not on this album, I'd really want you to check out Telegraph Road. So many reactions have no insight or consideration for the skill Mark Knopfler displays on this track, the sublety of his playing with a mastery of playing the guitar with just enough weight and balance, no thrashing on the instrument, almost like a deft violin playing at times.

Everyone recommends Telegraph Road and I love it too, but also while you're there Private Investigations is a great song too.
As for Brother's in Arms, a very fitting end to a great album. The evidence in this song of MK's phrasing and use of space and time to convey emotion is tremendously successful and I love it for that. I don't consider anyone a great guitar player if they don't understand space, time and silence in the music they make. Notice in the beginning how he puts maybe only a note or two in and sometimes none at all in spots where you might find others starting to add more? He gets it. At least he sure gets me. :) Songs that are long and use space and time like this aren't radio friendly. They are written for those who have time to sit and think and absorb and to relisten through time and time again. All these years later, still listening. Not many songs get this kind of replay. No wonder to me why.

Brothers in Arms was one of the first albums recorded on a Sony 24-track digital tape machine. The decision to move to digital recording came from Knopfler's constant striving for better sound quality. He was always willing to spend on high-quality equipment."

What, Mark was born in Glasgow, shame on me. Being from the SE of England I had no idea, always thought he was a native born Geordie. Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and raised in Blyth, near Newcastle in England, from the age of 7.

Thank you for sharing . I was surprised you didn’t know this song..I don’t know why . But I knew it would be a song you would feel deeply inside . The song has such a beautiful flow and I think people feel that flow and it’s so smooth . For me the combination makes me feel like I flow effortlessly on a journey and I’m relaxed and consumed completely..then when it ends it’s almost as if I’ve been in a trance and I’m not sure what I’ve experienced but it hit hard . It’s a masterpiece ..in fact the whole album is especially I think two songs that I think are called why worry and ride across the river .

A profound song. "We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms" indeed.
Despite this song appearing to centre around Knopfler's guitar, the excellent a capella group Home Free released a deeply #Haunting a capella arrangement of this.... & It's possibly the most moving vocals-only piece I've ever heard. Please give that a listen sometime. ;)

When I saw this video I could not click play fast enough, and was rewarded with an excellent and moving reaction to a fantastic and moving song. Well done!
To echo what others have said, you should react to Telegraph Road, it has a similar vibe and you do not get short-changed by the instrumental outro!

Gorgeous, powerful and affecting. Deft, emotional guitar work, tender vocals, maybe their best.

For a good miniseries on WWI, I highly recommend "The Passing Bells" (2014), "An epic historical drama spanning the five years of the First World War, as seen through the eyes of two ordinary young soldiers."

I really enjoyed this, it's a powerful song and it is a privelege to witness someone having an open and honest reaction to it. Another song of theirs that I think you would really appreciate is 'On Every Street'.

Great reaction and great track! Brothers In Arms in my top 5 all time album. Each track top notch. A definite candidate for a full album reaction. Want another tour de force? Ride Across the River from this album. The layers, textures and atmospheric sounds are a master piece. But please consider a full album reaction. BTW, this was the very first CD I purchased (way back in 1985).

Hey buddy. I've thoroughly enjoyed being subscribed to your channel, watching your horizons expand through the musical conduit of history that us 'elders' remember...
I've watched your reaction to this masterpiece 4 times now. I can relate to your beyond-your-years insight and feelings. May I suggest you be swallowed up by Dire Straits magnum opus "Telegraph Road" (studio version first) and dive deep into the story and musical greatness within?
    Cheers, J

Teary-eyed is a completely normal response to this track. Another of theirs that I like that has similar vibes to me is Ride Across the River. The soundtrack for Local Hero is excellent, and the film is well worth watching.
