The phrase "Baptism of fire" means being in a situation you don't want to be in but you find yourself there and have to learn to deal with it...and quickly. In this case war. A surreal situation for anyone to find themselves in

Mark Knopfler is the real deal, a master at work. He's a virtuoso for sure. So many incredible songs have been written by him, whether for Dire Straits or on his solo records. So evocative. Pure talent in all the band. Truly one of a kind to grace this earth. So many other masterpieces to listen to, I look forward to your reactions.

You did your very best of that, I am sure. But to be there must have felt surreal & insane. Especially Vietnam where they were fighting over hills, the NVA & the Vietcong. Hamburger Hill comes to mind. So many died to take it then the Generals decide it is not important, not anymore. And the lack of welcome back home in both the USA & Australia who were also there with the Americans. It was a disgrace. I have a book written by Al Carlisle PhD. Named "Broken Samurai" Really an emotional journey of what I think that USA Govt is responsible for. In short what the war did to one American soldier who was a platoon leader landed in Khe Sanh, an American base close to the Laos border. What happened there I can only say was very frightening, but you would know better than most how bad all of these battles were. And what difference did that sacrifice make to the Govt. of that time. Not much & that makes me very angry with Politicians & Generals who are a long way from the battle & front making decisions that affect so many. It just never ends. I have come to the conclusion as someone who is interested in military history & history in general. Mankind is programmed to kill one another. The 20th century was awful but if we go back further it was much the same, only the weapon technology changes. The 19th Century, the 18th century so on and so forth. The Medieval period & further back still. The Romans etc. It is just unbelievable. Thank you for your sacrifice & service. I am sure you have many memories once seen, cannot be unseen. God bless all of our Veterans past & present. I hope one day mankind will come to realise WAR IS INSANE. XOXO

Mark knopfler is the lead singer, lead guitarist, lyricist and chief composer for Dire Straits. He is one of the most acclaimed guitarist of the rock era. They were huge through the mid-80s...... Selling out stadiums all over the world.

The graphics are amazing. This is about War. The suffering of men in battle who are forever brothers in arms. It is a special relationship like no other. Often, they come home & nothing is the same for them again. This was written over 40 years ago now & how many wars have we had since? Too many. This song makes sense. War is insane. Young men die for old men who make that decision & it is wrong. War scars the human soul & their brain. No one can go to war & ever be the same again....................Musicians should rule the world not politicians. If they had to send their children to war, there would be no wars again. This is such a powerful song. Yes, all soldiers are brothers in arms. No matter which side you are on. You are fighting for your side but should not any more kill one another.

The guitarist/singer/songwriter is Mark Knopfler (British, wore headbands on stage until he cut his hair), not Stevie Ray Vaughan (American, wore hats on stage). Mark has been recording since 1978 and has a new album coming out in April 2024. Dire Straits was one of the biggest rock bands of the 80s, but Mark has had a very active solo career since the band broke up. He is 74 years old in early 2024, and his last tour was in 2019. I don't know if he will go on tour for his new album, but he might.

Atmosphere, storytelling, surprises! A great great band. This song and the album it came from blew them into the stratosphere. They sound more different on this album than any other. Might be my favorite song of all time...metaphor for ultimate brotherhood between people, we ca nachieve so much but those in power keep us fighting each other and they stay in power. I understand that this song was written about British troops in the 1982 Falklands War, though the line of blinded soldiers in the video is from a news reel clip of British soldiers blinded from a gas attack in the First World War. The song really transcends time, place and country though. I'm not even sure that you could call it an anti-war song though. It acknowledges that wars are going to happen and that some people are going to have to pay the price.
