Have plenty of old newspapers available. Every time the puppy pees or poops, slide a few sheets under him. The first time the puppy makes his own way onto the paper before he pees or poops, give lots of praise. Gradually move the paper towards a door to the outside, eventually putting it outside. I've had three dogs, all from puppies and this method has worked every time.

Phed Rob we had a poodle when I was young and we did this too. Then we kept a litter box with shreds of paper he would do his things there until eventually he learnt how to do it outside and it didn’t take as long as 8 months... probably a few weeks.

There are a few factors in potty training. One resource I found which succeeds in merging these is the Sues Trainer Tactics (check it out on google) definately the most useful remedy that I've heard of.look at the extraordinary info .

Take a new puppy outside the moment they wake up from sleeping or any naps, and right after they eat. You will have them potty trained in record time. Don't forget to praise them , praise them, praise them. They will always want to make you happy so this will be easy for them to understand, if they potty they get lots of good boys.❤️❤️🐾🐾🐾🐾

Oliver is just adorable, love the way he's sleeping thru the whole video, Matthew, it seems you're one patient guy, who loves, & cares for Oliver, right from the very smart of him being a puppy. I told you many times, I love & respect the bond you two have for each other, may it only, without a doubt, continue to grow stronger with each passing day. Thanx Matthew for sharing Oliver's life with so many of us, he's a real sweetie, & a cutie. GOD bless y'all

Good tips, and I did laugh out loud about Oliver tracking poop all over in a minute and a half. Housebreaking your first puppy is the hardest because you don't know what to expect and you wonder if it will ever happen! It really is easier if you have an older, trained canine sibling to "model" the behavior. My beagles have all been about 7 weeks old when I got them, and at that age they REALLY don't know when they have to go--they just do it without any warning. Pretty soon they start giving you clues, like sniffing around for a good spot. One thing I would add is to take your puppy out immediately after he wakes up from a nap as well as after eating, as you mentioned. Also, my vet confirmed that it's OK to limit water consumption in the evening. Beagles are actually pretty easy to housebreak (some more so than others), and once they get the hang of it, you (almost) never have to worry, and potty training becomes a distant memory. It does really help to have a backyard, though you still need to go out with them, including at 3:00 a.m., to make sure they "do it" there rather come right back inside and do it on the carpet!

My beagle puppy was immediately potty trained because I took him outside every hour and every time he woke up from a nap. I don't have a backyard either. He probably had about 4 indoor accidents, and none of them were peeing. Two of them were because he was sick. Oh, after he ate or drank, he would go outside within 10 minutes. I was very lucky. My beagle has slept with me in my bed from Day 1.

When my beagle was a pup, I was only 6, so my mum did most of the training. He learnt very quickly to basically stand by the door, bark and he would be let out into the small patio (where we had alot of plants for him to pee and poop on.) Even when he was sick and unable to move, he tried to keep up the habit. Toilet training was the only training he accepted XD lol.

Hi Oliver! We had to take Charlie out every 20 mins. And sometimes he would pee in the house, literally minutes after peeing outside 🤨🐶. Then we trained him to ring a bell when he needed to go outside. That worked well until he just started playing with the bell all day. Now he just sits by the door when he needs to go outside 👍🏼🐶🐾

  • @SmudgetheBeagle
    @SmudgetheBeagle 5 років тому +3

I had to re-watch tiny puppy Oliver at the beginning - adorable! Thanks for your tips - we are almost at the end of the process now (I think) though Smudge still likes to get up once most nights.
The main thing we found is, as you said, being very aware and interrupting, or even better just before when puppy is sniffing around looking for a place, to get her/him outside. We have a word for her that means it's time to go as well, not sure that it helped but may have.
Also not getting angry or upset when an accident happens inside, a puppy can't help it, but lots and lots of praise for going outside.
Big hugs to Oliver from Smudge 🐾

Our Beagle pup would only go inside! NEVER outside! We would take him outside for hours on end, as soon as we come back in he would go?! Went through tons of potty pads! But this all changed once we got a house with a fenced in back yard. He now gives us the look or sits at the back door when he needs to go. :-)

All of my dogs are rescued (two off the road and the third from the pound), and as such, they were not puppies when I got them. I was able to train my two year old girl using the kennel (like you said, they don’t like to potty where they sleep). Same for my two year old boy that luckily still tinkled like a puppy (and by this, I mean he squatted and did not tinkle by lifting his leg).
However... my third and youngest of the crew, he does tinkle by lifting his leg so the kennel was a joke for him bc all he had to do was lift his leg and the urine would land outside the kennel. To this day, he still has frequent “accidents” inside the house whenever we are not home. But he is my greatest joy and I clean it without complaints. At least my whole house is tiled. 😅

I have a 4 1/2 month old puppy. We have been trying for about 6 weeks to potty train him. He is getting there. 🫤 Our problem is peeing inside. He hasn’t pooped inside for probably a month. The bell on the door helps, but I think it has to be on the door to the outside for them to grasp it. I also think, girl dogs are easier than boys. My girls always had it down within 2 weeks. I do all the things, first thing in the morning, after meals, after any naps, after play, and before bed. I also believe crates help them learn to hold it. I’ve read, a puppy bladder rule of thumb is an hour plus an hour for each month old they are. So a month old puppy can only hold it 2 hrs. 4 month should be able for 5 hours. It’s definitely challenging!!! Love your videos!

ThankYou 💕Great advice babies daddy & Oliver🎾... Also..Whatever “size” puppy you have you just “imagine by the body size”
and even if it is a dog, fully grown, by “figuring how big their bladder is”... is how u know how often they need to go out. So if it’s pup or small dog think table spoon 🥄 size or serving spoon size ...which is gonna be often, right? and for a bigger dog think 1 cup 1&1/2 cups etc... then along with that measurement u pay attention to how much they drink n if they recently drank that much then in a short measure of time the pup/dog needs to go out to potty and here’s the biggest thing of all to remember🚽
“as soon as the dog or puppy wakes up, immediately scoop them up and run them out the door place them on the grass”. Here’s your next best friend for potty training a dog… You can buy this really cheap at dollar tree it’s that pet carpet accident spray for a dollar it has the hormone stuff in it that kills dog P smell or you can go spend a lot of money on it at Petsmart and it’s called pet accident accidents are going to happen with the puppies but if you don’t remedy that dog smell spot he’s going to keep marking it. All right here’s another thing… If you have a boy dog you have to neuter that puppy while he’s still peeing like a girl or he will develop the habit of hiking his leg and then it’s nearly impossible to get him to quit hiking his leg and it’s hard on a dog to be neutered once they get bigger or maybe not just get the boy dog neutered while he’s Peeing like a girl to be better safe than sorry. If you rescue an animal from the shelter and they have gotten used to peeing on the concrete that’s where they’re going to first want to P, but you can get them used to the grass in short order time, just get them to the grass so they get used to it. If you ever rescue an animal their nerves are somewhat bottled up and they might not poop for a week, that’s how you know they are still in a nervous state without them telling you... Of course because dogs can’t talk but this is a way you can read them. If you ever have a dog that is nervous and doesn’t poop after you’ve had them for a while because maybe they’ve gone through neglect add a little bit of CHIA SEEDS IN their food. If a dog licks your hand or leg or wherever and it didn’t leave any saliva on your skin, that means the dog is dehydrated. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink, same thing for a dog and a cat sometimes… So what do you do? Well you add meaty dog food or cat food to the water and then the dog and cat will drink… Most of the time but don’t let me confuse you don’t ever feed cat food to a dog This rotts their insides for the dog-Research that please and I repeat don’t ever feed cat food to a dog. OK now I even once had a dog that was so neglected after I rescued him that I couldn’t get him to drink even with this idea of putting meaty dog food and canned fish in his water so I gave him a test to see if he was lactose intolerant when I gave him milk, and his stomach did OK on it so I just gave him a big bowl of milk every day.
Here’s another one that will save you some money that is not on the same subject but it’s a good tip, if your dog gets a boo-boo like a cut or something and it’s not too bad and it does Not need stitches, clean the wound with some type of wound cleaner maybe even peroxide, treat the wound with red iodine and then treat the wound with triple antibiotic ointment two times a day and save some money going to the vet. Keep the animal out of the dirt and keep doing this and everything will be OK two weeks it should be healed. Love you all over and baby daddy Oliver’s dad

PS: when you scoop them up to run them outside do you want to have some calmness about you when you do this because the puppy is just waking up it can be startling to them so take a deep breath, be calm but hurry don’t shake them up too much...
      Say....
Awwwwww..... that universal language to even lizards that make all creatures know everything is OK K. And also the next thing you want to be sure to do after the party and remember if you’re taking them out to P you’re going to get number one and number two so it’s gonna always happen just if you make yay hooray parade and just keep repeating that… 💕🎾sure you take them out to P but the other thing you always want to do is you do the happy song happy dance yay hooray parade after the go... Yay hooray parade… And you can try this with your toddler’s LOL

Our method of potty training ended up being "the easy way " we simply let the older dog train the younger one. This actually just happen by luck as our first dog, a service dog to respond to my daughters cardiac and apnea monitors at home as a backup to us perhaps sleeping through an alarm, was already potty trained when he came to us. When he 'retired' he stayed as a family pet and since we did not need a service dog as she out grew the need for monitoring, we decided it would be a good time to get a second dog, especially as we knew Romeo might not be with us forever. This is when we got our rescue, Padfoot, and except for the first day when he peed the minute he was brough home, probably do to excitement, he took all his cues about going out, asking to go out, and not going indoors from Romeo and we actually had a potty trained puppy from the beginning. After Romeo passed we got Buddy, and while he was close to 6 months old he was not trained at all but after a few days with Padfoot he did much the same as Padfoot had done as a puppy, took his cues and learned to ask to go out as Padfoot was doing. Blue came along after Padfoot had passed and she was a young one, only 8 weeks old when we got her and so at first was spending a good pit of time in a puppy pens as it was less about accidents then he ability to chew on everything including wires that did not allow her to be as free around the house as we had been with the others. However by 10 weeks she was big enough to leave the pen on her own (by climbing up the side) and so our major training was to break her of chewing through everything and while we were doing this she pretty much got her potty training from Buddy, and actually he did the better job as she was potty trained much before she stopped chewing things up. The thing that was interesting is that in each case where we had a new puppy along with an older dog by the second day that the puppy was here, and the older dog had figures out that the puppy was here to stay, the older dog started going out more often and we have always wondered if they were then cueing into puppy signs that let them know and they felt it was tehir job to take the puppy out. Interestingly enough that once the puppy got reliable about asking to go out the older dog went back to their much less often schedule of asking to go out and let the puppy ask on their own. This did cause some confusion at first for the puppy when he/she asked to go out and the older dog did not join in the outing but they figured it out and we did not have any accidents except a few time when we were gone longer than expected and while the older dog was capable of waiting the puppy just was not but that was on us, not on the puppy. We did get bells for the door for all our puppies and they never equated it with anything but to get us to stop doing what we were doing and pay attention too them. And actually after a time we found the older dog using the bells as an attention getter too and soon the bells came to be rung when either dog decided it was meal time so they became known as the "Dinner Bells" and we still have them around now, hanging from the pantry door, in case they think that dinner is not being served on tim. . As soon as the weather is warmer and animals can fly our newest dog, a rescued dog who was injured and had a locked jaw which was fixed by a charity I support that takes in animals that have major trauma or illnesses and actually have little hope to survive without this charity, will be coming to us from Spain. I don't know at this point if she is potty trained but I hope it turns out that she will get her cues from both Buddy and Blue and will just be another case where we get off easy. I am still stocking up on puppy pads just in case. But I do think that potty training is a good bit easier when you have another dog, who is, around to help :)

That's amazing, Pam! It's so interesting to hear about how older dogs can train younger dogs better than we humans can! Also, thanks for sharing your experience with the bells--we had EXACTLY the same experience with Oliver, so I'm glad we're not alone! Best of luck with your newest dog from Spain!!!!

Belly bands really worked for me. Making sure that I gave him time to air out. I always let him out around 20 minutes after he ate or drank anything. I have to say I found it easy. In spring and summer, I was able to leave the kitchen door open as we do have a back yard. Mostly it's watching them after they eat or drink. Belly bands helped when we went to other people's homes... Bar whatever humiliation it might cause the dog, within 2-3 weeks, we had a schedule. Doggie seems well adjusted. Hope your's goes as well.

We have Toby, a 5 month old beagle that there are times when he's so good about peeing outside and then there are times when he knows he's doing wrong but pees I side anyways. It's so hard to be so consistent...

My beagle..got him when 10 weeks old..was so small ...but showed him just one time what to do..and yeah there were accidents but very few..rest of time he went to back door yelled went to right spot in garden and got a treat...the treat beagles learn instantly to get it .they are highly intelligent. It was more difficult for this chap as they have no back yard...but if u do have one its much easier.

After a few days of having her we went to keeping her on her lead. And harness at all times so she wasnt more than 20 ft from us. Then we went to taking her out every half hour and after two weeks home she was house broken.

Great tips! We adopted Sonny our Beagle...for the most part at 3.5 he is pretty much trained but still has the odd accident for no reason! Our biggest problem is separation anxiety! He hates to be left alone...our neighbours can hear it barking if we leave him alone... he is not destructive just barks! Any comments or ideas on how to deal with this?
