Thank you so much Valerie! I like to show that even after years in this world, we all still make mistakes and have to troubleshoot from time to time. I have lots of experience with learning on the fly, so why not share it?! Thank you for watching my video, I am so appreciative 😃
Thank you for being humble enough to show your mishaps. Many people show perfection, which can be discouraging for a newbie. Beautiful setting looking forward to watching the next video.
Thank you so much Rene! I’ve been doing this a long time but I can’t ever finish a project without having a stumble - I think it happens so we can learn something new 😊
Thanks for this! And a huge thank you for showing ALL the steps including mistakes. I feel crazy sometimes when I bump my own work, thinking no one else I see does this, what's wrong with me! It's also good for me to see you re-making the setting because of the mistake, and testing, taking apart, and testing again because it reminds me to take it slow.
Yay! I decided to show it all because I thought it would be helpful for others to see that even after 17 years of doing this, I still make mistakes. It usually comes from rushing or trying to do too many things at one time. I’ve learned when I focus and take my time, I have less of these frustrating moments. But, like anyone else, I still have days where I’m too caught up in my brain and forget to slow down 😁
Awww thank you so much Liz. I think sometimes it comes down to the teacher’s ability to clearly articulate the steps. I’ve taken a lot of classes that were helpful, but honestly, I’ve learned a lot more from doing things wrong 😁
Hi! If you reduce the diameter of the curve closer to the apex, using flat parallel pliers instead of half round in the bend, you'll be able to create the tension you need. The wires need to be straight and parallel. Also, a good way to get the rings parallel to each other withing the prongs is to place a chosen size of wire as a shim between them during set up, then solder the joins that are not close to the shim, pull the shim wire out and continue to solder all four prongs. Good luck.
I e seen others use the shim method and I’ve wanted to try it, just haven’t had the time but will have the studio up & running in 2025 and ready to try it. Thank you for reminding me 😁
Thank you very much such a great video extremely informative , I am very happy that you included your mistake that is so genuine can't wait to see part 2
@@JulessaScofieldMetalsmith awe rats! I can only seem to find very plain ones clear... I love the way you built that setting though I think I finally have a chance of success✊😁
@@JulessaScofieldMetalsmith and the book my Tim I completely forgot I have that book actually an autographed copy I got it out and holy cow the info inside is AMAZING. Can you do a video explaining the cone one? I know its in the book and I have read it now like 12 times but for some reason I still dont get it. 😕
Thank you so much! Yes, I try to use hard solder as much as possible. I will solder parts separately then use medium to do the final soldering. Last resort, easy solder.
@@JulessaScofieldMetalsmith would love more on using burs (types)on setting for a faceted stone and how u measure for placement of where u cut or bur.I always have issues with that type of setting. Love your work especially the video of the cignet ring
Thank you! 😄 I use hard solder wherever I can! But if you’re worried you may overheat and “unsolder’ the first join, you can move to the medium on the second ring.
Hi Lina! I use the Benchmate soldering station from GRS. It comes with 2 third hands. It’s a little pricey, but is far superior than purchasing the third hands individually with the weighted bases. I bought mine from riogrande.com.
Omg... because it was budget friendly, the first time I tried doing this I used copper wire and it was a disaster! LOL! I'm going to try again though with silver. Btw, did you make the pretty ring you're wearing? Thanks for sharing!
Copper is great to practice with for lots of things except stone setting. I recommend using brass instead. It’s a harder metal and behaves a little more like gold and silver.
Thank you so much, this is so helpful. I have a question with the ring formula, is it in millimeters? for this example it should be (1.6x2) - 8? English isn't my first language so I think maybe I'm getting lost in translation haha
So, how exactly did you get that measurement? The formula gives a measurement of 4.8mm but you said you wanted 5 or 5.5mm for the inside diameter. Is the formula just to give you a very loose idea of the size? I’ve seen a few other jeweler’s videos where they seem to use a formula exactly, but I’ve never had success that way. The formulas alway seem to make too small of a bezel or a basket.
So happy to see you not edit any of your corrections. Most don’t show us the trials and tribulations. Thanks so much.

@JulessaScofieldMetalsmith sooo glad you're coming back!! Yay!!!
Very informative. I am glad you kept the accident in the video. It lets us know that the pros mess up also.
Thank you! It’s good to show we all have oopsies!
Very interesting and informative. This is the first of your videos I have watched. I really like your style!
Thank you so much Jeanie! I am working on new videos and getting my new permanent studio up & running, so stay tuned! 🥰
Wonderful! Great teaching. I am working on a basket setting now.

Thank you so much!!
Would you think of doing one on how to make ring like the one you are wearing?
Absolutely! Great suggestion! I will put it on my list of videos to make.
Mil gracias, la explicación precisa, gracias
Muchas gracias Carmen! 🥰

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. My question is: do you use hard soldering on both jumprings?

Julessa, may I ask what pliers those are? they look like Lindstroms, just not sure which model.
Yes, they are Lindstrom pliers, but they are about 18 yrs old so they don’t look like the newer ones 😄

Can this basket be done using argentum silver?
Yes, absolutely!
Gonna give it a try. I know argentum had a tenancy to slump and I was worried about it during soldering.
It’s all about controlling your heat. Too much and it will slump no matter what! Keep your flame hot but keep it moving.
Will do that and probably not use the third hand as it gets so brittle. Thank you so much!
Hello . Please how can i making hard silver solder
I will make a video about this soon!
million of thanks to share your precious experiance
please give formula for size of bezel same like in your oval feceted ston bezel video thanks a lot
