I saw this film and had so many feelings about her life. She shot 100,000 photos but really did not have the money ever to get the photos printed. She worked as a nanny her whole life and had an incredible eye to photograph her world on a daily basis. She shot films too and did interviews with strangers on a cassette tape recorder. And now we get to celebrate her life of art forever.

I'm an introvert who has a tendency to feel a bit misunderstood, and I loved this documentary so much. It inspired me to take up street photography as a hobby and find a sympatico hero in Vivian Maier. I love some of the interviews with people who knew her, particularly the grown up children she cared for as a nanny. All of them seem to have been effected by her quite deeply, and many of them in ways they don't seem to fully understand. It's really cool. It shows how introverts really are, far from being the socially unskilled people we seem to be. The real Vivian Maier didn't get found out until after she died. But now we know about her depth, compassion and interest in people. RIP Vivian.

I wept when I saw this. The film exposed much of my own life. I, also was a 24/7 caregiver for years. What people must understand is... You give up much of your own life when you work like this. It's a very private, isolating, consuming, draining, joyful, heartbreaking, ....(etc.) -life (job). I, myself, I took care of seniors. I gave up years, years of my life doing it. Like Vivian, I'm a creative, and it's hard to be expected to be focused on others all the time when your passion begs at your heart. -Thus said, i have no regrets. I came to Love all those I cared for, but perhaps like Vivian, I also wondered if people really thought about what I was giving up.... to devote myself so much to them. Perhaps this is the reason I too, became a "collector." Living in other people's homes, if your lucky enough to have your own room (& bed, not a couch in the living room),... your privacy is VERY limited, time to yourself is very precious,.... Many people seem to be quite critical of Vivian, but I understand her. This lifestyle is not easy. I myself, Loved the people I cared for, but secretly sometimes craved the outside world, and to have a little piece of it myself. I may not be expressing my thoughts well enough, but I recognize Vivian was someone with a great deal of Love even if people saw her as odd. She deserved more respect, and shouldn't have died ALONE in the end. She lived her passion. She gave her life to people, and she worked on feeding her own soal. Thank You Vivian, you're beautiful to me.

Saw the film today..March, 14 2019....Did she really love the children she cared for? According to some of the now adult people she "nannied" at times she was cruel and had a very dark side. Highly recomend the film

The relentless self-aware exploitation of surface inherently makes today's time less antique, regardless of time.
Photography holds less unique value in commentary and revelation of modern society, but artistic mediums like forms of film-making have the potential to have a strong impact.
The future's view on our societies may most beautifully be resonated by South Park.

Saying that anyone can take a picture is like saying that anyone can prepare a gourmet meal or paint a masterpiece. Look at all of those lives that she's captured so wonderfully, and how they live on in her work. That's art.

read about her and went to the exhibition (twice) whilst on a trip to London in 2011. I do a lot of street photography and her work just made my heart sing, beautiful composition and feel. She was clearly someone who had a trained eye, lived for her photography and despite the misgivings about someone else cashing in on her work her work deserves its place amongst the best purveyors of street photography as her photos tell a story rather than just being snapshots

+Ar die The whole point of photography/a photograph is to capture, and make permanent, a moment in time. Creating something that can be viewed and looked at is LITERALLY the whole, and only, fucking point of the invention/task. The idea she didn't want anyone (including herself, because she never developed the film) to see a moment in life she intentionally captured/stole from the flowing world is nonsense. That's like a person who made shoes their whole life being upset that people started wearing them. As if a different purpose or reason might exist behind creating shoes other than putting them on someone's feet. The only fucking thing you can even do with a picture IS look at it. Nobody just "enjoys" pushing a button on a mechanical device, leaving the producton of that device alone or undeveloped. That's like being impressed with the rewind button on a VCR. She took them for a reason, for posterity....even in her own mind. This is also why she hoarded newspapers, scrapbooking some of the articles. She wanted to capture moments in time. She had compulsion, OCD issues. She was a hoarder. She never developed or showed her work for a handful of simple, obvious reasons. 1) Her hoarding, OCD issues are time/effort consuming...leaving many things (not sorting through her newspapers for articles, not developing her pictures etc) undone for people like her. What she did isn't remotely uncommon for people with her clear psychological issues to do. 2) She wasn't educated, was a woman in the 50's and 60's, was a nanny...she had no entrance into the artistic world, nobody to show her pictures. No known path to travel to any ends she might have dreamed about. 3) A product of the other 2 probably.....she's shy, scared her work isn't any good; will be rejected. She doesn't have the courage to open herself up to scrutiny. People that never try never get rejected. She could remain a legend in her own mind, protect her ego from the judgement of others. Yes, she had an ego. She told people she was a foreign spy, lied about her educational achievements, exaggerated her accent to present a more cosmopolitan background etc. She wasn't some meek, humbled person working in obscurity just for the purity of the act. She was a legend in her own mind kind of person.....but with the plot twist being that she WAS ACTUALLY talented at photography.Who cares if someone makes money off the pictures? Is money being stolen?? Is anyone on earth less wealthy, less fortunate, more oppressed because someone went to a valid auction, lawfully purchased items, spent their own money developing their acquired property.... all while bringing the dead/family-less photographer international acclaim and recognition??To be absolutely frank? The ONLY potentially exploited people are all the people Vivian took pictures of without asking their permission(and it is known from her camera and camera angles that she snuck many pictures). All the dirty, obese, struggling people...the grotesque images of downtrodden people she wanted to capture. Imagine how some of them might have felt. A morbidly obese man, and this random woman secretly takes your picture as you mind your own business on the streets.....and you hear the device make a noise, knowing what has happened. You think he is stupid too? You think he doesn't know this stranger snuck a picture of him because of how unnatural/carnival attraction like he looks? That's an exploited person. That's a person who goes home and feels shame because he knows he looks so repulsive that a complete stranger felt the urge to single him out and sneak a picture of him. Vivian Maier is a dead person. She doesn't feel anything. Her ego would have loved this admiration for her work though. On the outside, she would have projected annoyed, "offended", because if she accepts the praise publicly from others, then she also gives the same people the power to take that praise away. Inside she would be in pure exctasy over the profuse praise her work has garnered however.

+Arda Von I do see your point, and that is very valid. I am also a photographer, and relate to bits of her story. Now, let me flip the coin. Say I find a Pablo Picasso painting from a garage sale that happened to be the neighbor of an X girlfriend of his. The painting was a gift from Picasso, to his then girlfriend. Now, this was never meant to be seen.. nor was it ever meant to be sold. However, it's an unseen Picasso, and I bought it at a garage sale. Is it gross if I take it to Sotheby's and sell it for $140,000?

    What a phenomenal discovery!
The world needs to see more of itself through the eye of an artist such as Vivian Maier. Simply because she was an unknown, has no bearing on her talent as a photographer.
Her uniqueness is what sets her apart from others.
The mystery of this woman and her journeys with her camera is what will set her apart from the others.
I'm happy her work was uncovered, but a little sad that her personal life is now on display to the world. We can be a cruel bunch at times.

you are learning who this woman was, and what interested her, through her art. if you found all these films and developed them, and you saw all these raw and beautiful images, would you really keep it to yourself? would you not tell your friends? This is a beautiful journey, it's a project of studying someones life. You learn them, you breath their past.

Art isn't just about "feel," it's about highly technical mastery of dozens of tools of craft to convey meaning or expression, or to evoke emotion. Vivian Maier's a potential master not just because she had a critical eye for subject matter but also for boring stuff like white-balance levels.
