In one of my campaigns I was playing as Rome and one of the barbarian tribes declared a surprise war, and two full stack armies attacked my 15 stack army so I was outnumbered almost 3 to 1. I put all my infantry and archers on the very edge of the map, but scattered my cavalry throughout the woodland. What followed was an hour of sending individual infantry units to try and tie up multiple enemy units at a time, sending my archers around to surprise them from behind, and a crap ton of charge cycling with my horses. Thankfully I managed to take out one of the generals early on, and when the final general fell it caused their last two units to break. I used my last cavalry unit to mop them up as they fled back across the map, wracking up a crap ton of kills. In the end I had my general's infantry unit and one unit of cavalry totaling about 100 men between them. The enemy lost one entire army and their second one had four units totaling about 300 men remaining. I then brought my 20 stack up from the south and tore through their kingdom in retribution.

    • @GonzoTehGreat
      @GonzoTehGreat 4 роки тому +1

If you have a numbers advantage in infantry and the battle is static then rotating your troops should keep them fresh while tiring those of the enemy, but if the armies are closely matched then you risk weakening your battle line by doing so, which makes you vulnerable to focused, concentrated attacks.

I love the 4 v 4 with the same nation but i think it would be cool that instead of having each army be a small individual army you guys should get each of the 4 guys on the same team to have 1 act as the overall general, and the others like generals of a certain portion of the force.
    Each would have 4 players
1 overall commander (he has authority on the BF other generals listen to him):
you could do real scenarios/battles with real generals or just custom make the scenarios but have each like army specialize in something:
For ex. Persa vs Macedonia in the Battle of Gaugamela
    Macedonian Army:
General 1(Alexander): would be full of Companion clav, some lighter cav and skirmishers
General 2 (Parminion): Comprised of mainly hoplites with some cav and skirmishers
General 3 (idk): middle comprised of almost all phalanx with some units of shield bears on the flank.
General 4: same as general 3 or no one because the Greeks were outnumbered.
    Persian Army:
General 1 (Dorias): Some chariots and a lot of powerful infantry and a unit of elephants
General 2 (Mazius): A lot of cav (heavy and light but mostly light) and some light infantry
General 3 (Bessues): Same as general 2
General 4: a lot of light infantry from all over the empire.

I love your streaming videos on these epic battles. Really well done and I like your enthusiasm for the historical value that this game provides. However, this is without a doubt one of the bloodiest pyrrhic victories I have ever seen. This battle is like Okinawa, Gettysburg, and Cannae all rolled into one disastrous bloody battle. It was definitely an exciting battle to watch because the outcome was in question right up until the very end. But one thing to consider... If this battle were the real deal, your entire army would have been decimated and left with very few men remaining to defend your country with. As if that wasn't bad enough, your general is laying dead on the battlefield to boot. I don't know too many governments that would consider that a great win lol. The fact is, you saved your country from utter defeat and that's what counts, but you would have been left with basically no troops to take advantage of the win. I know one thing is for sure, I wouldn't want to be the one writing all the letters to the families.

40:44 "Pyrric Victory" refers to King Pyrrus of Epirus who, during the Diadochi Wars (the wars between Alexander the Great's generals after his death) achieved victory in battle at such great cost he famously said, "Another victory like this and we will be undone."

Actually it was after a battle with the Romans in southern Italy (which is right across the Adriatic from Epirus which is why he got involved there).
That was actually Rome's big strategic advantage all the way through the Republic era; due to the way they raised their armies and ran their conquests they could replace losses much more readily than their main rivals.

    A fun watch, no doubt.
I can't imagine being a part of such a mass of humanity, each intent on the slaughter of the other.
I have nothing to compare it to as far as it being the greatest pitched battle. So until I see one that is better, I suppose this is the default gold standard, in my book.

That was very fun to watch! Have you ever considered using a drawing tool to draw out your strategies while you explain them?

I absolutely love the same faction of players vs the other same faction. Like 4 roman armies vs 4 Carthage armies. Wish to see more of that just to watch the scale of a battles

I don't usually sit through a full battle but this was genuinely exciting. The effort of the Carthaginian players to turn the Romans left flank on the hilltop should have put Carthage in the box seat to win, but man... Roman infantry are tough SOBs. Almost stole the show too. Great battle, great commentary.

I was beginning to think that no one would be left alive to tell the tale.
Although the Vultures sure profited in a big way that day.
Not to mention 10 widows to every victor back at the tents.

Chaos... Carnage... That left flank though... The feeble right could have been saved if they had formed back on the hill, while pikes and infantry sit behind archers, with flanks secured by cav...amazing job on your side, left was shrekt

I would do anything to be able to go back in time and watch these battles in real life. I just can’t imagine how crazy it would be to see hundreds of thousands of men all Battling it out with swords and arrows like that
