So glad to have caught this. I’m the same as the Marine. Left eye dominant. Lefty with the rifle (or bow and arrow )and right with pistol. Yet I’m a righty when it comes to writing or throwing a ball or playing guitar. Always felt like a bit of a freak. Glad to see I’m not alone. Haha.

I’m a lefty, and I really appreciate companies like stag arms that take lefties into consideration when building a firearm
digital1911 I pretty much only shoot suppressed, so left hand ejection is one of the main reasons I like stag arms.
Mr. Butch Cassidy those are great companies too. I run radian accessories on my AR-10 and AR-15. I have always had an eye on the LWRC Razorback, but I haven’t been able to justify the cost yet.
I wish more companies followed Stag's example. Especially those specializing in high-end components.

@@MrButchCassidy I'll second LWRC, their rifles come with full ambi controls right out of the box. After watching this video I actually tried to press the righty bolt release on mine with my left index finger and found it too stiff, likely due in part to the ambi bolt release paddle on the other side.

I am also left eye dominate but mostly ambidextrous in many things. I was taught to shoot as a child by my USMC marksman father. That was when I learned I shot better left handed, on a long gun. I was retrained to shoot pistol right handed during CQC train at Group. All my teammates called me a “freak” lol. I lucked out just prior to deploying to Afghanistan in 2001 and our armorer got me an “ambi” safety. That new safety was a game changer. Thanks for showing love for us “southpaw” shooters. 🇺🇸.

Long story: A few years ago, I had LASIK surgery on both eyes to correct astigmatism. The procedure left me extraordinarily gifted at long range in my left eye. A few years later, I acquired my first long gun, an AK variant. Given the layout of this rifle - charging handle, etc., I decided to give a go at left-handed shooting. I am right-handed, and that's how I shoot handgun.This, however, seemed a game-changer for me, as it gave me a perfect flow between pistol rifle combo operation. The LASIK aside, I highly recommend right-handed pistol shooters learn this "switch-hitting" skill. Oh - by the way - Garand, you ROCK!

former infantry marine here. left eye dominant but right handed. i shoot long guns left handed but pistols right handed, where you place your mags on your belt or vest is PERFECT. pistol mags more on the left side and long gun mags can go forward of my pistol on my belt or jsut the general right side of my carrier

This is good stuff. I'm right-handed, left-eye dominant, learned how to shoot a rifle left-handed in the Scouts but always shot pistol right-handed but sighting with my left eye, but after a surprise stroke a few years back I've been forced to go left-handed for everything (except writing).
This video was a godsend. All my friends are right handed, so it's nice to hear some stuff from fellow left handed mutants.

I'm left hand, foot, and eye dominant and do everything lefty. I train ambi on pistols. After the marines I've learned to adapt to using non ambi weapons.
Agree, youre only going to pick up righty stuff on the fly. I switched my beretta mag release to lefty and immediately thought "I guess..."
This is the earliest I've been to a video.
As a fellow lefty and former Jarhead, I trained myself to use the knuckle at the base of my left index finger instead of my thumb to work my safety. Its takes a lot of practice but its much quicker than having to reposition your hand because you move your thumb around. Also helps me so that I don't have a need to run an ambi safety at all.

I'm a full lefty wondering the point of the video lol. I ran fully right handed ARs for 10 years before I had any choice of getting a lefty lol
Left / left.
Left/left started on a standard platform. I would typically reach up and grab an empty mag and hit the release with my thumb and holster or pocket the empty mag or throw it downwards to get it out faster, insert new mag and the bolt release would be operated with the left index finger which for me required breaking grip slightly.
I hugely appreciate having an ambi charging handle, but without one I have to grip the rifle by the hand guard with my support hand and I’ll pinch and rip the charging handle back with my left hand, which can be done with or without the weapon shouldered. If I’m manually locking the bolt back, I hold the rifle with my support hand back under the receiver and manipulate the paddle while operating the charging handle with my dominant hand. Totally inefficient and that’s why an ambi charging handle is probably the more important component that should be upgraded.
The safety is flipped down with the left thumb for me, or the left index which requires breaking grip entirely. To put back on safe I usually break grip and catch it with my index finger as it’s being lowered.
But now I’ve got a POF so nothing matters anymore. Learning the hard way was beneficial though

Thanks for the video. I also shoot (as infrequently as I am able) longguns left-handed and pistols right-handed. I am left eye dominant and left-handed with most tasks, but my right limbs are stronger, so throwing, striking, and gripping a pistol are all right hand tasks. Shooting pistol left-handed just doesn't work nearly as well when I try it and I haven't had the opportunity to attempt to fix it with training. Glad to see someone who shoots the same way.
I just installed my AU Abmi mag release; and wholly shit it made a world of a difference. swapping mags is so easy now. I used to have to feed with my right hand and press the mag release with my right thumb forcing me to do crazy holds to swap mags. now I can have a more positive grip on the mags and get back in it faster and more efficient.
As a lefty I appreciate you making the effort to put out this informative video. Seeing the setups and hearing the reasoning behind each was extremely helpful.

This is a great video. I am left handed and I shoot everything left handed with the exception of the M249, M240, and M60. Pretty much anything that is belt fed I shoot it right handed. I was assigned the M249 very early in my career and it was always a struggle for me because I was using it left handed. I was very fortunate to meet a Marine Staff Sergeant during one of my M249 classes. God bless this Marine, his way of delivering info just click on me, and he showed me how to use it right handed. Not only I’ve qualified Expert ever since, I was able to train other Soldiers that where struggling with those weapons systems.

Im a lefty. Was a c9 gunner. Same as the saw in the US. I had to use soccer shin pads on my right forearm and bicep because the link and brass would rip the shit out of my arm. Pistol shooting is great as a lefty because you can use your dominant eye and hold the pistol off hand or strong hand. Doesnt matter. Corners angles its great. The c8 or m4 hand to keep my right elbow down a bit. Straight out and high was a bit of powder on the forearm but the brass would eject high over it. Lefty was great for the c8 because you dont have to cant the gun if you have a stoppage. You can see your ejection port already. Bad levers are amazing for lefties and ambidextrous saftey.

I shoot just like Eric, also call it “Evolution” due to being able to put rifle and pistol mags on opposite sides. Also currently an Instructor in a Marine CQB school, wearing full kit, it makes gear layout easy.
Care to elaborate? currently setting up my gear to also run a handgun. I find it weird to have to juggle both the handgun and rifle mags on the right side (I'm cross dominant). What do you recommend? Also, fellow Marine.
Daniel Maurer , I shoot rifle left handed and pistol right handed. So my rifle mags will tend to be to the front and the right side. As my pistol mags will be more to the left side of my belt. So everything isn’t on top of each other.
To be honest, I remember the first time I shouldered a weapon left handed, it felt so awkward and wrong. So I just decided to start using my weapon left handed in airsoft whenever I needed to switch to that side. After about an hour of doing it on an urban airsoft site, it became very comfortable and normal. And then I was able to shoot real steal weapons left handed. It’s all about practice and repetition when doing something out of the norm

I did a competition in the range with a rival of mine who claims that "left handed people are considered disabled." So we ran some weapon drills and I always reloaded about twice as fast than he ever could. His sportsmanship was always so freaken pathetic.

Instructors have tried to get me to use left guns for trap shooting, but it doesn't feel good. pouch on right side, the efficiency from the pouch to the chamber is just perfect flow.

I run any ambi safety, troy mag release, and maritime bolt catch/release, and raptor charging handle. That's all you need to run fast as a lefty

OK, I'm a little "late to the party", but THANK YOU! As a lifetime Southpaw, I have always struggled with most pistols and long rifles. What never actually occurred to me was the (un)complication of "Right Eye Dominant". Yes, I am one! I am in the process of reevaluating both pistols and long rifles. Life just became a LOT less complicated!! (and a Subscriber)

This was actually pretty entertaining to watch lol.
As a right handed shooter who suffered a right hand accident and lost much of the dexterity in that hand. I’ve learned to shoot my pistol left handed and shoot my rifles right handed.
It’s weird I know but I’m effective and I train this way in order to mitigate the right hand deficiency. In terms of eye dominance, I’ve never really had any issue being right eye dominant but shooting left handed. My belt setup is configured accordingly with my Safari land holster on the left with my rifle mags just behind them. Pistol mags are on the right with a CAT TQ just behind that.

"The Mag Thingy" - Garand Thumb 2020
After years of eating brass, I finally built a left hand gun a couple years back. Used a San-Tan Tactical ambi lower with a Gibbz Arms left side eject upper. I love this rig. Lots & lots & lots of rounds with no issues. I highly recommend both companies products, for lefties in search of a solution.

At first I was like that’s dumb I’m right handed I can skip this one....then I realized I’m dumb, I should probably watch that one
I’m similar to these two gents, I shoot rifles/shotguns on my left side because primarily, my left eyeball is dominant. I mostly do all of my day to day life tasks right handed like writing, ironing, teeth brushing. But I’m sort of semi-ambidextrous with some stuff and not with other things. For example, I can shoot pistols and do all immediate action drills, etc... on either my right & left side, I play my guitar left handed but not right side very well because it feels awkward. I can do culinary work ambidextrously , i.e., handling and performing knife-work like chopping, slicing, filleting etc...these things I can do on either of my sides, also stuff like sautéing, frying, flipping woks, etc.. I can work the stovetop pans effectively on either side, but I feel more stability and consistent accuracy when conducting singlehanded type of handling and manipulation tasks from my left side than I can on my right side. Yes, I admit it’s odd and weird most of the time to normal right handers and/or left handers, but it’s a odd difference that proves to be an advantageous versatility a lot of the times. Rahh!! Im Cross eye dominant, i shoot left handed and I've never got brass in my face. Idk what your doing wrong lol but that shouldnt happen...
The carbon blast is another story though. A lot of blowback into my face when shooting suppressed, just wear eye pro and remember suppressors make you cool so just deal with it.
@@mrdark9916 an SKS has an annoying tendency to violently fling brass wherever it wants on occasion. I've seen it throw cases hard enough to stick them into the rafters.

That statement made me laugh. When I was in the service in the early 70’s before they put the ejection ramps on the M-16’s, shooting left handed the hot ejected casings would go down inside my shirt!!!

They have the same exact issues that I overcame being left-eye dominant, feels good knowing I’m not the only one.

Joe Anderson I’m the same but I’ve recently been converting over to left-handed shooting with a pistol as well. Actually feels kind of natural.
I've been trying, to me it doesn't work as well left handed, more training and practice it may.
I’m left eye dominant but shoot pistol and rifle right handed. My eyes aren’t that far off as far as one being super dominant. Why would someone decide to try to shoot with their weak hand considering we have red dots

I manipulate the safety with side/palm of my hand. Mag switch I just grab a fresh magazine first. While pushing the mag release (with my right-hand (thumb) holding a fresh mag) I place the middle finger of my left-hand on the the spent mag to prevent it from sliding out and falling to the ground. Than I grab the spent mag, push it to side and insert the fresh mag with my right hand in a (pretty much) flush move.
So I am former Canadian army, and I drove my instructors nuts during basic training and Battle School (Infantry course) because I am completely ambidextrous, I shot rifle left handed, but I can shoot a pistol either hand with equal proficiency. In my civvy life now, I run a DDM4v3 I have a Radian Arms ambi charging handle, and safety, I'm using a Surefire Z2 Combat light at the 12 o'clock position as you call it, on the left hand side. I keep my rifle magazines on my chest rig, and pistol magazines on my right hand side of my belt. My current battle belt is GGG, but I am ordering a new one from LOF Defence here in Canada. We're not allowed cans, on our guns here, so I don't really have to deal with the blowback issue, other than that my drills are decent I would say, not too many issues. As a lefty shooter the only weapon I really struggled with was the Carl G because that simply cannot be fired from the left shoulder! Good video! Now I just need one to answer my question about shooting an M1 Garand from the left shoulder!

I am in the exact same boat as Eric. My right eye is not 20/20 but left eye is so rifle is left handed and pistol is right handed. Nice to know there's someone else out there!
The AK platform is easier to operate for a left hander imo.
Honestly most long guns work well for lefties
@@lewislawson8412 Some more than others, i'm left handed and the AK charging handle and safety lever is easier to access than the AR's controls.

@@ThomasHendrickson I reach the AKM a little forward then i just flick the safety lever, if you get the krebs custom lever its even easier.
BoogalooBoy1776 yea maybe, but they would maybe have to switch the charging handle to the left side (which isn't possible), so they can do the whole reach-under/reach-over thing.

As a lefty i always suggest i get the left side of cover so your peeking natural like a righty on the other side. Also ill be sending my hot shells to the right where my alleged "friends" will be. This is sensitive info so i made you wait two years.

Outstanding video!!! I am a lefty. Very ambidextrous due to living in a right handed world. Veteran where I had to use what they had. Cool thing is that this caused me to realize that I could shoot with either hand. So, I shoot “Expert” with both hands, all weapons I ever carried(which was quite a few different ones). I never would have done that otherwise. Being left handed is both a pro and con all at the same time. We just learn to improvise, adapt, and overcome much earlier than right handed people. Also, interesting note, there are more left handed people in the military as compared to civilians. The ratio is higher. Interesting…

As a left handed shooter, I appreciate a video dedicated and showcasing the particular challenges that come along with it. I’ve always ever shot left handed and 99% of my fellow shooters are always right handed so I just take instruction and apply it as necessary without “BUT IM LEFT HANDED” nonsense. I just put the thing down flip it and reverse it.
