Not keen on some of the recent developments in our game but the shocking footage is well in the past. Some of the incidents were not foul play they were assault worthy of a criminal offence in day to day life. It’s a tough game and I loved it, we respected each other.
It’s a pity that some footage of incredibly dirty play has been buried by time, poor memory and old technology. Otherwise it’s only come out later. I remember some particularly dirty incidents like Drikus Hattingh kicking I think it was a Hurricanes or Highlanders player in the head right in front of the ref and getting an immediate red card in the late 1990’s in a Super Rugby game. The other player was left unconscious. Oddly enough Drikus Hattingh was later tormenting a younger player in a Pretoria club rugby game. He received a huge blow to the face and a broken jaw. I remember how in 1993 Balie Swart was left unconscious from NZ rucking and how Francois Pienaar had to be carried from the field in a tour game from the same NZ tour after one ruck. There was also Burger Geldemhuys of then Northern Transvaal breaking the jaw of a NZ Cavaliers player in a 1986 game. Johan Le Roux was a serial biter. There was the time he bit the ear of Fitzpatrick and got rightly banned for that. Little known was that years before he bit Adrian Garvey of the Natal Sharks in the face harshly while playing for Transvaal in the early 1990’s. Somehow the Ref was clueless. I also remember the eye gouging of the French players against Australia in the 1999 RWC final. I think the ref at one point called the captains together, pointed to John Eales’ eyes and said to the French captain ‘No more. Go talk to your players.’ It later emerged the French forwards were also striking there Australian forwards in the testicles.
I find it interesting that neither the All Blacks Double Spear tackle on Brian O'Driscoll nor Paul O'Connell's kick to the head of Dave Kearney were included in this video. Bias?
