Derek, I am a digicals guy and I need to give you the digicals. Car Ignition system, if you have a ballast resistor it is there to keep the COIL running cooler when driving, let me explain. The coil itself is designed to run between 8 and 10 volts for a full 28Kv output, when you start an engine however the starter will drag the battery terminal voltage down, so now when you hit the start position on the key it supplies the full whats left in the battery. When you release the key ( engine started ) power now flows through the ballast resistor so that a full 13.8v does not kill the coil. People short out the ballast and wonder why the car runs like a sack of spuds, its because the coil is boiling and will soon break down completely. Also its called a coil because it is, its a coil of wire wrapped around an iron core and bathed in oil producing an electromagnet. When the points interrupt that voltage, the stored energy in that magnetic field collapses and induces a high emf voltage in the secondary, in a nutshell, but the ballast res is not there to stop the points from burning out. And when you adjust your elbow torgualator remember the Japanese handbook states 'Tighten till thread strips, then slacken off half a turn'. Kep up the good work boss. Brian.

My dream car is a 1973 Monte Carlo. No one seems to pay attention to those on car channels. Or anywhere else for that matter. I know this is a 74 but it's close enough to enjoy every video you've made on it.
Derek’s boys are gonna be some of the best mechanics around by the time they’re able to drive. 😂 I ❤️ love it that he does things with his kids. Little Grip Garage is awesome too. I like working with my boys. In my last video I had 2 of my boys rebuild 2 Mikuni Carburetors. 😊 It was fun.

Derek, I have to say thank you, for all of the work you do. You continually bring solid content to the car community, the kind that doesn’t leave us hanging. I’ve been a car guy all my life and there’s a lot I’ve had to learn alone. It’s been refreshing being able to find content that covers every aspect of whatever you’re trying to learn, in such a simple way that seems to really resonate with others. And to turn education into inspiration is absolutely the pinnacle of what a great teacher could be. You truly are a hero
learning alone is half the fun. My car buddy moved to FLA and up and died on us. His ticker was bad. He had a pacemaker as it was Whatever made him think moving away was going to do for him didn't pan out.

I like the LS swap idea on this one. As you said it will be a reliable, turn key car that can actually provide alot fun and power with little modification. I like it and as always I love your content! Keep on keeping on Derek. Your one of a kind!
Hey Derek, you might want to look into the pneumatic jacks they have at harbor freight for cherry pickers (engine hoists). It's basically just a regular jack setup but with an extra mechanism on the side and a valve that you can hook compressed air to, then when you hold a valve open it acts as if you're operating the handle but a lot faster.
Always love to you wrenching on your toys with the boys always helping out... Nice to know my garage floor looked the same as yours as my brother-in-law and I swapped motors on a 2015 Kia Soul... This 2015 Kia Soul that I scooped up at auction was severely damaged above the crash bar so the Aluminum Engine took most of the impact, cracking the engine where the alternator bolted to the engine... On these Kia Soul's, so much easier to take the engine and Transmission as a complete unit... The best part about wrenching on our toys is being able to just get out their and do it - enjoying the fresh air, the challenges and of course, when the newly installed engine 'Barks off' on the first Key Turn - That's a beautiful feeling. Another Great Video - Love to see you do what you love to do...

Love your content Derek. Keep up the great work!
Good luck on the LS. I can't imagine how you keep all these projects straight in your head? Would love to know how the 400cid registered its objection.
Love seeing the Young Ones out in the shop with you, reminds me of Dad and I out in the shop. Sure do miss him and spending time in the shop together. Learned a ton from him.Great video as usual,Thanks.
I nearly shot my cold snack out of my nose with Derek’s engine removal advice- “make sure you’re doing it late at night by yourself” 😂
Sneaking up on the kiddos in the car is priceless!😂 my dad use to snatch the door open and jokingly yell “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?” Followed by a dad belly laugh. Miss those days
I like the LS swap idea on this one. As you said it will be a reliable, turn key car that can actually provide alot fun and power with little modification. I like it and as always I love your content! Keep on keeping on Derek. Your one of a kind!
Made several laps around that track sense I was 13. Love it
Hey Derek, you might want to look into the pneumatic jacks they have at harbor freight for cherry pickers (engine hoists). It's basically just a regular jack setup but with an extra mechanism on the side and a valve that you can hook compressed air to, then when you hold a valve open it acts as if you're operating the handle but a lot faster.
Those are amazing: I've used mine with my cherry picker to move truck cabs around a few times. SO much easier than pumping it by hand....
Thank you sir for everything you put out here on the interwebs. You making the world a better place…..
I could watch you for hours on end! Thank You Vice Grip Garage!
Stumbled across your channel about a month ago and have been catching up on all the old videos. Working on a 1957 studebaker transtar and listen to the channel while working on it. Keep up the great videos
18:07 - what a great, perfect dad. so cool. God bless.
That was a lot of work. Yeah, I used to play in all of Grandpa's old cars too when I was a kid. Traveled the world in those old cars that didn't move.
You've heard it a million times, but thanks for what you do!
A guy can’t wait to checkout the video on the Monte’s 400 circle track finale. A guys really enjoying roadworthy rescues.
