    Thank you! This was wonderfully informative. I'm looking at a client's logo, which they chose to make gradient. And I'm trying to understand the brand expert's reason for being against gradients.

      Thank Joanna. Gradients can be really useful in giving more impact or adding dimension to a logo. We just all need to be aware of how that can impact the reproduction of the logo when it comes to things like printing or where we have a restrictive colour palette.
      Thanks so much for leaving your comment.

    Fascinating optical illusion with the big "U," as it turns out to be perfectly symmetrical when viewed as one color. It's SO hard to see that in the two color version. Anyway, that's neither here nor there. Excellent stuff on gradients! Shadows are tricky, too. Can be cool, but we must be careful and think through all the variables.

      That's it, Peter. As long as the variables are considered then we can make the right decision :)

    Hey, Today I binge watched about 40 of your videos, and I just want to say they are really interesting and entertaining. Thank you very much!
    Is there any books you can recommend for someone who has a casual interest in graphic design?

      Woah! Thanks so much Rowan.
      I don't really read many graphic design books, I read more on brand and branding. I'm starting to collate a lot of the books I like over on my Kit page. You can check them out at kit.com/pixelscol
      Once again, thank you for taking time out of your day to watch my videos. It really does make me happy to know that they are helpful.

    Hi Col. Great video, I'm currently designing a logo with gradients, but also supplying full black and full white versions. I wonder these days, however, do you think that the need to optimise a logo in svg format for the web or a website is really necessary? Surely the majority of kb / data/ size can be saved by optimising images (where you can make real savings in terms of image size) compared to the few kbs saved by reducing the number of colours in a gradient is neither here nor there if you are optimising your images properly?
    The embroidery issue is obviously a thing, but are we limiting ourselves (or our gradients rather) for the sake of the limitations of an embroidery machine?

      Hey Ben, yep, all great points. My video is pretty much pointing at worse case scenarios and for those that may not think further ahead than having their logo printed full colour on a page or hi-resolution on a screen.
      With vector files like SVG, increased bandwidth, better printing technology and so on, the restrictions on using gradients are less and less.
      You are on the ball here and thinking through everything, as you should. That is great to see.
      Really appreciate you posting your comment. i think it will be useful to anyone who reads it.
      Stay Creative!
      Col

    Do you think gradients are good idea for fabric and other non-digital stuff or do they mainly only work online?

    • @RockYourBrand
      @RockYourBrand  5 років тому

      I haven't really any experience of fabric printing so I can't really help you out there.
      For printing on paper, I'd always suggest speaking to your chosen printer to get some input from them on how their process handles gradients. I've had instances where gradients have had very clear banding and appear to look washed out and muddy, even though on screen they looked great.

  • @benzflynn

    But you said nothing about limitations on color reproducibility when printing. Digital printing with CMYK will impose limits on how bright your reds, oranges, yellows and other intense colours are. Often you get gradients from dark red to scarlet/orange for certain types of product-related logos. Or transitions from blue to turquoise to almost white say for a company flogging detergents. I suppose you'd have to do a trial printing of the logo on paper or vinyl decal to really see the viability.

    • @RockYourBrand
      @RockYourBrand  3 роки тому

      Yes, that is where getting a print proof (sometimes called a repress) is invaluable when colour accuracy is vital. This lets you see what the printed colours look like and allows for adjustments to be made before a full print run is carried out.
