Just bought a 2019 pilot and love it! The 9 speed transmission is sporty and I believe the V6 will be very reliable as it has been around forever now. It's actually the main reason I decided to get the pilot now, as I'm sure the next generation pilot will have a 4 cylinder.
Since the new MDX is still using the V6 I'm sure the new Pilot will also too. I had a 19 Pilot Touring AWD but traded it in cause of the transmission. Too bad Honda didn't use their 10-speed instead like they do in their Odyssey. That 9-speed still hunt for gears at lower speeds. I'm waiting for the next Pilot or getting that new MDX instead which uses that 10-speed transmission. Acura needs a sport hybrid version though so I'm waiting for that.
@@volcalstone I agree. I have noticed the transmission hunts for gears a bit, but I got a 5 year warranty so figure I'll wait that out. Though, with how the used car market is, and if the new pilot comes with a v6 hybrid, I might reconsider.
My only reservation with the Honda V6 is the cylinder deactivation system, or VCM, as Honda calls it. It tends to lead to oil consumption as the miles accumulate, due to the temperature differential between the hot and cool cylinders causing some contraction of the piston rings, or something. All I know is, my 2009 Odyssey started drinking oil conspicuously around 90,000 miles, and now at 210,000, it needs a quart every 1,000 miles or so or it gets very cranky. Judging by the posts on various Odyssey and Pilot forums, this continues to be a problem in newer model years, despite Honda supposedly fixing the issue with TSBs.
Loving my 2022 Sport, I found the cloth seats to be more comfortable then the leather. As for fun driving...it's an SUV, it has a ton of room a more than adequate powertrain and yes its boring. And I love it, its predictable and the ride quality was way better than the Kia and Hyundai. Just felt like a more solid vehicle, only thing I dont like is the armrest, hoping I get use to it.
Please please PLEASE check your daughter's car-seat installment. I saw it move shift side to side at least 6 inches around the 9:43 mark (Emotion Factor) section. Scary!!!
I've been driving Honda's since 1994. This is my 2nd Honda Pilot the first one was the first generation edition. I got my new 2021 Pilot in February. So far so good. My biggest concern on this vehicle is the 9 Speed auto and how long it will last. Good ride and nice finish. Hoping to keep it for at least 5 to 8 years. Mine is the EX-L model, color is black.
I'm thinking about the pilot but hear about transmission issues. Small correction, the engine is V6 not the transmission. Transmission can be 4, 6, 9 speed, etc

I enjoyed your review of the Pilot. I do not like the armrests and it was a a main reason I passed on buying one. I just did not find it comfortable for long drives.
I buy the Honda Pilot as a family vehicle. It offers the space and features that I need and a rear entertainment system for my children. I live in Canada so AWD and clearance are important during Winter months. Awesome vehicle to drive and enjoy. If you only care about the exterior, Japanese vehicles are not for you, in general.
We test drove the Pilot recently after driving a Highlander and Atlas. We could not believe how poor the sound was in one of the upper trims compared to the other two vehicles. Our 2013 Pilot bested it even. Checked all the levels to be certain someone didn't mess with something, and it didn't appear misconfigured. We were very disappointed.

@Scott Campbell or don't own either Japanese and not have to go to the dealership except for free oil change and tire rotations. Seriously, if you plan.your car purchase around the dealership you bought.the wrong car unless it is an exotic car as most cars are reliable today.
Got a 2021 white Special Edition back in november (well my wife did) for our incoming baby (he's 3 months old now) (special edition is an EXL with the black edition roof rails, grille, wheels, and wireless charger up front, foot activated liftgate, and rear sunshades) It also has the a subwoofer in the sound system, and it is plenty enough. We got it for 37k out the door (it's 39.5k sticker) Looks fine, I know there are some vehicles that are fancier looking, but it handles great, it accelerates great, it's quiet, super comfortable, and tons of room for the baby, our 14 year old, and all the stuff on trips.
Very nice! I have a 21’ special edition as well, couldn’t be any happier. Although I have an issue with the brakes of the car, they make some squeaking noises at times. Do you have any issues with the brakes?
Watch out for the Drivers side view mirror. The Pilot and Passport are both having issues where the glass is separating from the seal. I have a 2021 Passport Myself my Mirror glass is on order and its on back order so I wait.
you highlight what I live about Hondas from my then new 2003 Civic EX and now 2016 Accord EX-L. They could keep up with Porsche and beat Mustangs on twisty canyon roads (until the road straightens out). And the engine especially in S mode is so willing and fun.
Gonna have to buy bigger car soon, family is expanding,. Looking into this in the Black Edition, or the Acura MDX, but wanna hold out to see if the Type S is worth the splurge.
We had one for 3 years before eagerly trading it in. It's nice lookin, and has a durable interior that unfortunately has by a large margin the worst infotainment in the segment. Power was fine but real deal-breaker was the ride. It was comfortable from a harshness standpoint but the first inch of travel and roll was so soft that the thing made people car sick and in general the car felt extremely clumsy. For comparison, the Telluride we bought to replace it handles much better while still being comfy. I even looked for aftermarket solutions for suspension but couldn't find a sportier set of shocks for it. A last point of common complaint was a safety system designed by chicken little. A few times a week it slammed the brakes on because you were going around a bend and there was a car in its lane in oncoming traffic. For all the livability problems - it was perfectly reliable.

I am okay spending more but I would keep it for at least 8 years. Also, how would you compare the Pilot in terms of NVH vs like a Hyundai Sante Fe? Wind noise at highway speeds more specifically

One option worth considering is the Subaru Outback. They call it an SUV but it's really more of a wagon. Our daughter had an easy time climbing aboard when we tested the Outback a few months ago.
I'm from Canada. I traded in my 2017 Honda CR-V Touring for a 2021 Honda Pilot EX-L with Navi and am quite liking it. It has the bigger naturally aspirated V6 engine as compared to the 4 cylinder CVT, the roominess but what it's lacking is the modern designs as compared to the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Pallisade. Can't wait to see the 2022 Honda Pilot design and I wish it carries the 10 speed automatic transmission from the Honda Accord.

We both like a tight steering n suspension cuz we live in LA n lots of street turning, canyon carving. What would you say are the sportiest handling SUVs in the X3 size and also the X5 size? Do any of the non luxury makers come close outside of Mazda? I have a reservation on the Ioniq 5 n hoping that steers tightly too, never given a Model Y ( as reference we drive a 5 series right now)
You've honestly hit on the prime suggestions. Mazda in the non-luxury space. Ioniq 5 is another intriguing quasi-SUV choice, though I have yet to drive one. I'll toss in Porsche Macan as a used option...though given current used prices it'd be wise to wait a bit.
@@MicahMuzio yeah a macan or cayenne are definitely the others I've considered but I'm guessing you've driven them all in similar fashion. I just worry the macan has like no cargo space and much like you mention in this video i cant not get the 360 camera in a car after having it and many used Porsches lack the option. Having sat in the ioniq would you say the materials are cheap compared to luxury? I've seen comments about that.
I wish Honda would give it more style in materials. It’s so practical and reliable, but so boring with cheap materials and dumpy body style. Really hope the 2023 is revamped
@@Just-a-guy926 thanks, was this a change? The 2021 Pilot offers a SE trim and that is usually a Honda sign of a new model next year. Will the the all new Pilot be out early in 2022 as 23 model? It’s already a bit dated.
The Toyota Highlander is clearly more economical, better interior, way better infotainment, more mpg. But I like the Pilot exterior better. Overall, just buy a highlander. Or a Telluride. Or even a Sorento is decent.
The highlander interior feels cramped compared to the pilots, I’ve seen em both. I only like the fact that you can get the highlander as hybrid, the hybrids saves you a ton of $ in gas. Also the infield of the highlander felt cheap to me, too much cheap black plastics everywhere.
It’s a really hard decision. If I could punch only Doug DeMuro or this guy in the face, I’m not sure who I’d choose. I wish there was a UA-camr who made videos on the various reasons why one should be punched vs the other. A nice breakdown would really be helpful.
Bigger than highlander , very competent SUV!!! But not very fun to drive . It is just not tuned for it. Sport mode revs too high . Standard is just not as nimble as you expect for a vehicle that has almost 300hp.
I traded my 2019 odyssey for a 2021 Pilot special edition. We really like the pilot, however the third down and trunk is no we’re near a spacious as the odyssey’s were. If you always drive with a lot of passengers I’d recommend the odyssey. Also the pilot a little less gas efficient than the odyssey was

You guys should’ve got 6 speed automatic transmission, it’s available on 2019 Pilot, EX-L is well equipped with many features in my opinion.

I get way more excited about money in the bank than a depreciating capital expense in the driveway.
Based on Consumer experience recommendation only the Pilot as it's last entry, none of the Acura model or Honda Passport are recommended today.

I thought the Pilot had a CVT but finding out it doesn’t I REALLY like it more than the Highlander

It's just a tall minivan minus the sliding doors. Same as the Passport. Honda could have just added a lift to the Odyssey to achieve this here.

I just have to point out that the Honda Pilot is not a helicopter.
I read the adaptive cruise control, touch menu, and safety warning systems are not as good.
I wish Honda would give it more style in materials. It’s so practical and reliable, but so boring with cheap materials and dumpy body style. Really hope the 2023 is revamped
I have zero interest in this vehicle, but this family makes adorably personable reviews. 😀

For 2022 there will be a TrailSport trim between the Touring AWD and the Elite trim.

@@Just-a-guy926 thanks, was this a change? The 2021 Pilot offers a SE trim and that is usually a Honda sign of a new model next year. Will the the all new Pilot be out early in 2022 as 23 model? It’s already a bit dated.

The Toyota Highlander is clearly more economical, better interior, way better infotainment, more mpg. But I like the Pilot exterior better. Overall, just buy a highlander. Or a Telluride. Or even a Sorento is decent.
The Mazda CX-9 is a very good competitor to the Pilot, specially if the driver has any interest in the vehicle being fun to drive.

All Japanese crossover are FWD based as they have been for years.

Which one can you recommend between Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander?
The highlander interior feels cramped compared to the pilots, I’ve seen em both. I only like the fact that you can get the highlander as hybrid, the hybrids saves you a ton of $ in gas. Also the infield of the highlander felt cheap to me, too much cheap black plastics everywhere.

It’s a really hard decision. If I could punch only Doug DeMuro or this guy in the face, I’m not sure who I’d choose. I wish there was a UA-camr who made videos on the various reasons why one should be punched vs the other. A nice breakdown would really be helpful.

Bigger than highlander , very competent SUV!!! But not very fun to drive . It is just not tuned for it. Sport mode revs too high . Standard is just not as nimble as you expect for a vehicle that has almost 300hp.

I traded my 2019 odyssey for a 2021 Pilot special edition. We really like the pilot, however the third down and trunk is no we’re near a spacious as the odyssey’s were. If you always drive with a lot of passengers I’d recommend the odyssey. Also the pilot a little less gas efficient than the odyssey was
Though. Either are rated very highly by Consumer Reports, the new Honda Passport along with all Acura products are not recommended.
